New from Taschen. Recommended. This visual chronicle is the first of its kind, a deep dive into the complex symbologies behind witchcraft traditions, explored through the history of art. The witch has played muse to great artists throughout time, from the dark seductions of de Goya and Albrecht Dürer to the elegant paean to the magical feminine as re-imagined by the Surrealist circle of Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and Leonor Fini. This surveys her many incarnations as she shape-shifts through the centuries: mother, nymph, crone — seductress and destroyer. Profusely illustrated with a wide range of artwork from Victorian era to today. Nudity. Taschen, 2021. Mature Readers. ...More.

News & Notes

Spectrum Fantastic Art Quarterly 1

We’re not formally announcing this yet, because the retail price falls below our minimum for coming items. But we want you to know that it’s coming in late December, and we are doing a special signed bookplate to accompany it.

Dan dos Santos is signing it, and we’re numbering them from 300. We’re taking 1/3 of the print run of just 1000 copies. Edited by Arnie and Cathy Fenner, this is designed to “fill the void” of missing a year of the regular Spectrum Annual. It’s a high quality, large format magazine not unlike Glamour International if you remember those.

The first issue will feature revealing new interviews about Frank Frazetta with interviews with Frank’s family, as well as compatriots James Gurney and William Stout, offering a whole new side to the famous artist. Also, a major feature on Don dos Santos; Gregory Manchess on painting covers; memorials for Rich Corben, Stephen Hickman and Rowena and more [SPEQ01. $25].

Collects #1-5, 2019. By John Layman. Art by Joe Eisma. The Angels are back, baby! — The original Angels, Jill, Kelly and Sabrina! Travel back to the swingin' 70s, and revisit the butt-kicking, crime-fighting, mold-breaking lady detectives who took 70s TV by storm, ready to do the same to comics 40 years later! Break out your bell-bottoms, feather your hair, and jump back to an era of peanut-farmer presidents, gargantuan gas-guzzlers and foxy female detectives for a globe-trotting adventure that's simply too big and epic for the 70s-era boob tube. Written by elderly Eisner winner and solicitation-writing former-superstar John Layman, and with art by his scrappy but lovable youngster pal, Joe Eisma. This is one graphic novel you DON'T DARE TO MISS! Dynamite, 2019....More.

Recommended. This brings together the first three graphic novels Enki Bilal created with the scriptwriter Pierre Christin: The Cruise of Forgotten (1975), The Stone Vessel (1976) and The City That Did Not Exist (1977). Focusing on an enigmatic character with supernatural powers, which serves as a theme for the trilogy, the three stories delve into a village of the Landes, a Breton fishing port, and a small working-class town in the North as they fight to survive this supernatural menace. From the creator of The Reprieve & Flight of the Raven. Recommended. By Jean-Pierre Gibrat. A beautifully drawn and deeply emotional graphic novel, following the singular story of a young man caught up in World War I. In a small town at the foot of the Pyrenees on the French Mediterranean, lifelong friends are called to arms, except for Mattéo, who, as the son of Spanish refugees, is exempt from service. Yet when his fellow villagers—including Juliet, the woman he loves—express disdain for his pacifism, he finally capitulates and joins embark on an epic adventure that will have a resounding impact on all their lives. Recommended. By Dan Mazur. Lunatic is an unusual and striking graphic novel in the tradition of wordless books by the likes of Frans Masereel and Lynd Ward. The word "lunatic" derives from Latin, meaning "of the moon" or "moonstruck," and in this sense it describes the protagonist of this story: from infancy she develops a magical, almost intimate relationship with the moon itself and it acts as her friend, lover, and mentor. She is a dreamer, an outsider, and she's going to get herself to the moon!! Part fable, part classic adventure in the tradition of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Fanfare, 2021. Out of print....More.

Set of four variant covers—interior is the same—by Stéphane Roux, Vincent Aseo, Stephanie Hans, Goran Sudzuka & Fran Strukan. Recommended. By Mike Carey. Art by Jorge Fornes. Barbarella may have narrowly averted a galactic war”as only she could”but she's still in need of a null-d regulator. Hitching a ride on a cargo transport seems like a no-brainer, but these great seas in the final frontier are rife with pirates! Plus: someone's about to learn first-hand the dangers of emotional intimacy! This all-new Barbarella story continues with our girl as a sexy galaxy-wide trouble shooter. Adult themes (she's in bed with a handsome purple guy this issue)! Great covers! Dynamite, 2018. Mature Readers....More.

BIX By Scott Chantler
"A marvel of imaginative illustrative narration. ". Highly Recommended. From the acclaimed Eisner Award”“nominated creator of Two Generals and Northwest Passage comes a gorgeous and spare illustrated exploration of the rapid rise and tragic fall of 1920s legendary jazz soloist Leon "Bix" Beiderbecke. Told in stunning illustrations, at least five per page, like a daily comic strip. But this is a near-wordless graphic novel — it reminds us of Krigstein's famous "Master Race," it is so cinematic and beautifully paced. Bix was the most innovative jazz soloist of the 1920s after Louis Armstrong, but his life was tragic. Gallery 13, 2020....More.

An all-new sequel. Recommended. By Steven Grant. Art by Jesus Portaveritas. Savage, the star of Gil Kane's 1968 graphic novel, is back! He is the ultimate spy and de facto enforcer reining in the intelligence community's illegal excesses. But he's been framed by an international criminal cabal and is now on the run from the very government he's sworn to protect. Hmm, sure sounds like Jason Bourne!! Savage is the original anti-hero, the cure that could be worse than the disease.Looks like a good story, lots of action and violence, as with Kane's original story. ComicMix, 2019. Black Mask

The Complete Black Mask Cases of Harrigan. By Ed Lybeck. Art by Arthur Rodman Bowker and Jes Schlaikjer. Introduction by Will Murray. Quite likely one of the most hype — and most mysterious — Black Mask authors to ever appear in its pages, Ed Lybeck made his debut as one of editor Joesph Shaw’s new faces in the wake of Dashiell Hammett’s departure. For Black Mask, Lybeck penned the hard-boiled stories of Francis St. Xavier Harrigan, a former gunman-turned-reporter for the New York Leader. This edition collects — for the first time — the entirety of Lybeck’s Black Mask output. Includes an all-new introduction by pulp historian Will Murray. Steeger, 2020....More.

Bettie Page

Recommended. By Irving Klaw. Written by Cara Winter. The collaboration between Bettie Page and Irving Klaw produced photographs that are far more than mere pin-ups, embracing fetish themes like bondage, girl fights, spanking, and all the fetish clothing, from seamed stockings to high heels. Here are satisfying large, full page photos, most of them very high quality, crisp and sharp. They have given generations of people something to admire, by showing one strong, unapologetic woman, at home in her curvaceous body, with flashing eyes and a killer smile. PSG, 2017. Mature Readers.
