TALES FROM THE INNER CITY
Recommended. By Shaun Tan. The visionary Shaun Tan returns to show us five years of new and incredibly original stories, rich with feeling and strangely moving, “about the relationships between animals and human beings. By turns moving, shocking, hilarious, and surreal, Tan's stories place frogs in a corporate boardroom, bears in the legal system, horses on the highway, and more. Each tale is accompanied by Tan's luminous paintings, windows on a hidden world of truth and feeling beneath the surface of our everyday lives.” Arthur A. Levine, 2018...More.

R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 4 1982-1989
440 amazing pages! Recommended. By Robert Crumb. Crumb declares in one drawing, above a lovingly rendered tree, "As I get older I get more twisted, convoluted, depraved, cynical, embittered, self-centered, jaded, debauched, ruthless, greedy, conceited, set-in-my-ways, long-winded, absent-minded, prejudiced, closed-minded, misanthropic, nervous..." To prove this self-flagellating analysis he fills the pages with his signature perversions (in country settings), scathing social commentary, cruel self-portraits, experimental cubism... and some lovely sylvan landscape.Taschen, 2018. Highly Recommended. By Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham, Charles Robinson, Edmund Dulac et al. The late 1800's and early 1900's are considered the golden age of illustration for children's books, both in Europe and America. Artists such as Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham, Charles Robinson and Edmund Dulac designed the most fantastical, beautiful drawings to enhance the stories that still enchant to this day. PIN-UPS 2019 Calendar
Highly Recommended. Rare photographic images of naughty--and completely nude--but nice glamorous ladies date from the 1940s & 1950s. While some calendars offered art by Vargas and Elvgren, these were the images of real ladies--with the same wonderful curves and period outfits (or not) and hair. There is something about these well-endowed, stunning ladies that we just don't see in today's nudes. Their "provocative" poses seem strangely innocent to the modern viewer. Very well done, with all fresh photos we've not seen before. Catch, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

One of the most popular new adult-themed items we've handled lately has been The Sensual Goddess of Seductive Fantasy softcover [SENSG. $24.95] and its companion, The Sensual Goddess Erotic Playing Cards [SENSGC. $9.95]. So we went back to the publisher and now have three more items, from the same photographer and with the same models and fantasy themes:

And I fudged it a bit this with the new calendars. The photo pin-up calendar above actually should be here in this section, but I hated to separate it from the others. See our other adult calendars here.

We will not be restocking these titles, but you can still order them now while we have stock remaining: Moon Girl #2-5, Matt Baker's Teenage Romances and Pictorial Confessions, Black Cat Mystery, Dark Mysteries, Is this Tomorrow? (three left) and Chamber of Chills. These are all $14.99 each. We have very limited numbers of each.

Canton also does the sale-priced Canteen Kate [$28.99, your price $14.99] and Complete Golden Age Airboy and Valkyrie [COGAIH. $24.99, your price $14.99, which we'll keep handling as long as they are available. Their Original Ghost Rider is sold out.

Eerie Archives Vol 24

This unexpectedly went out of print just after it was shipped. But we do still have copies, we just can't get more. We've always counted on reordering these over time, so be aware that could be changing. As these (The Eerie, Creepy and possibly the Vampirella Archives) approach the end of their runs, the publisher may be cutting back on overprinting. So these may not stay available like the earlier volumes. I'd recommend ordering them in advance to prevent missing one.

Paperback Cover Artist Reginald Heade

What Matt Baker is to romance comics, and Varga and Elvgren are to pin-up, artist Reginald Heade is to good-girl cover paperback art. This British artist is the most collectible artist of all vintage paperback artists. We have sold a substantial number of his first and only art book, The Art of Reginald Heade [ARRHH. $49.]. This is imported from England.

Now the same author has compiled a new revised edition, with 50% more pages and 50% more material, including previously unknown covers and more reproductions from original art. We hope to be handling this in a few months. It will be around $75. In the meantime, the first book is still available.

THE ART OF HADDON SUNDBLOM
Limited, 900. Our Highest Recommendation. Haddon Sundblom (1899-1976) was Coke's most prolific artist, painting subjects that ranged from pin-up bathing beauties to soda-fountain scenes. They are actively collected today. During his peak period in the 1940s, he produced half of all Coke's advertising art, including the famous Santa everyone recognizes today. In the mid-1930s, he began to paint pin-ups and glamour pieces for calendars--this work was a major influence on many pin-up artists, such as Gil Elvgren, Edward Runci, Joyce Ballantyne, Art Frahm, and Harry Ekman. Sundblom's last assignment, in 1972, was a cover painting for Playboy's Christmas issue! This covers his entire career, including several full nudes. Illustrated Press, 2018...More.

Jon Whitcomb is sold out.

MARK SCHULTZ CARBON Volume 3 Signed
Signed bookplate! Our Highest Recommendation. By Mark Schultz. Mark Schultz once again shows growth in his exploration of technique, subject matter and story elements. Schultz says he's still working to refine his craft, and each new work is the result of an intense dedication to capturing his visions in new ways. In this new collection of the artist's works; the Xenozoic world takes center stage with preliminary drawings and concept designs from his upcoming Xenozoic graphic novel, placed in context with an introductory text that addresses his decisions behind the new art. Plus other works, as well as two spectacular panoramic fold-outs, one with color on both sides. Several nudes. Flesk, 2018...More.

ALSO AVAILABLE
MARK SCHULTZ CARBON Volume 2
By Mark Schultz. The first thing you can count on in any collection from Mark Schultz is a kind of subject matter, featuring outré situations involving daring men and women, and, often, fearsome beasts. The second thing you can count on is his allegiance to certain graphic media—generally brush and ink, and graphite and charcoal, but sometimes watercolor too. The third thing you can count on is that, although the subject matter and media stay consistent, his design, draftsmanship and control of his presentation are always evolving and growing, Here, in Carbon 2, his work has become noticeably bolder—more viscerally engaging. Flesk, 2016...More.

This bountiful visual history draws on Disney's vast archives, private collections, and the golden age of photojournalism to provide unique access to the concept, development, and launch of the Anaheim, California oasis of fun and fantasy. It documents Walt's earliest inspirations and ideas; the park's extraordinary feats of design and engineering; its grand opening; each of its immersive "lands" from Main Street, U.S.A. to Tomorrowland; and the evolution of the park in the six decades since it opened. HEROES, INC PRESENTS CANNON
Warehouse find, 1969. 50% off Overstreet Guide Value. Our Highest Recommendation. By Wally Wood, Steve Ditko and Ralph Reese. First of a two-issue comic book series that represents one of the earliest independent comics. Produced in 1969 by the publishers of Overseas Weekly and sold in Army PX's. That was where Wood's adult-themed Cannon and Sally Forth were appearing at the time. A second issue was published by CPL Gang Publications in 1976. This 32-page, color comic book, in as-new condition from a stash of uncirculated copies, features three stories with original characters. Cover price was 15 cents. Wally Wood, 1969. Out of Print. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: HERIN
Comic, 7x10, 32pg, Full Color
$7.50

These were offered to us by a collector who came across an uncirculated batch at a flea market, many years ago. I know the book had surfaced in multiple copies before, which is why such a cool comic, from 1969, only goes for a mere $15 in Overstreet. But regardless, if you don't already have a copy, this is way cool, a blast from the past—from going on 50 years ago! I am not going to invidually grade these, not for $7.50, but rest asssured no copy is less than Very Fine 8.0, and most are even better.

Flesk Books going out of print

The Storms at Sea Deluxe by Schultz is down to 20 copies from the publisher, and we have just seven left [STOSED. $100]. James Bama American Realist has been on sale and discounted for a while now, but they are almost out. We still have copies if you order soon [JMH. $34.95, your price $14.95]. They may sell out since they are listed in our latest catalog. We also have two free Bama books, one can be included free with any order for a Flesk book.
Their J.A.W. Cooper set of three books is also very low. And so is Gary Gianni's nearly new The Call of Cthulhu [ILLCH. $24.95]. Also going fast is Hellboy Into the Silent Sea Studio Edition [HELISEH. $50]. Our copies include an exclusive signed bookplate.

Upcoming Shows

I will be exhibiting at the following three shows between now and the end of the year:

OAF – The Oklahoma Alliance of Fans, October 6-7 in Norman, OK.

Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair, Seattle, Washington, October 12-14.

Sac-Con, Sacramento, California, October 21.

In February 2019, we'll be at the Pasadena Antiquarian Book Fair, and the ABAA International Antiquarian Book Fair in Oakland, both in California.

Would you like me to bring along anything for you to check out? Feel free to ask. I get asked about new products at every show, but I never have space for more than a fraction of what we handle. Email me bud@budplant.com.

I can't attend this year, but I recommend you check out the reinstated Dallas Fantasy Fair, November 24-25. Jim Steranko is headlining, and it's put on by publisher David Spurlock, Vanguard. Maybe I can make it next year, sounds like a good old-time show. Here's a link for tickets.
