MADNESS IN CROWDS The Teeming Mind of Harrison Cady
Our Highest Recommendation. By Denis Kitchen and Violet Kitchen. Famed artist and publisher Denis Kitchen and his daughter Violet Kitchen have created the first-ever comprehensive examination of this great artist, while collecting an amazing array of 300 generally scarce images. Harrison Cady (1877–1970) was one of the definitive magazine illustrators and cartoon artists of the first half of the 20th century. He created countless overflowing worlds of anthropomorphic lives: the Peter Rabbit Sunday page, the Happy Chaps for the magazine St. Nicholas, and illustrations that brought to life dozens of the Thornton Burgess books, filled with talking woodland animals and beloved by readers. JACKIE ORMES The First African American Woman Cartoonist
Good-girl art by an arrestingly beautiful black cartoonist. Recommended. By Nancy Goldstein. Art by Jackie Ormes. At a time of few opportunities for women in general and even fewer for African American women, Jackie Ormes (1911-85) blazed a trail as a popular cartoonist with the major black newspapers of the day. Her cartoon characters (including Torchy Brown, Candy, Patty-Jo, and Ginger) delighted readers and spawned other major merchandizing, including an elegant doll with a stylish wardrobe and “Torchy Togs” paper dolls. This celebrated biography features a large sampling of Ormes's cartoons, color Sunday pages, and a new preface for this new paperback edition. University of Michigan Press, 2019...More.

THE MARVEL ART OF JOE QUESADA
Recommended. In the first decade of the 21st century, Joe Quesada has guided Marvel and its characters back to prominence as editor-in-chief. Along the way he has changed the manner in which the industry works from the inside out. With those achievements, it's perhaps easy to overlook that at the root of all his success is his skill as an artist. Here is every detail of Joe's artistry, featuring his best interior and cover artwork, as well as a wealth of unpublished images and sketches, plus commentary from Joe himself! Marvel, 2019...More.

This finally collects all that early (most serious, some funny) comics work, much of it complete stories: Space Patrol, Meteor Martin, Disc-Eyes the Detective, plus long-lost rejected comic strips and lots more, including a blow-by-blow story of the tough early years of his career. H.G. WELLS Timeless Adventures from the Father of Science Fiction
Recommended. Few can claim a literary legacy to match that of H.G. Wells, who conjured fantastic tales that continue to stir both wonder and terror in readers after more than a century. His messages remain strikingly relevant today, with cutting social critiques and almost visionary portrayals of the future. This collection contains Wells's most notable science fiction works, including his four most popular novels:  the eerily prescient The Time MachineThe War of the WorldsThe Invisible Man; and The Island of Dr. Moreau. News and Notes

PG&E shut off the electricity for the area on Wednesday, September 25—just in case you tried to call us. Our server could still take internet orders, but the phones were off and our staff, myself included, had to work from home or take the day off. I'm writing this on my iPad—thank goodness our cellular internet is still good! We’re back up and running with full power now.
The new Basil Gogos books came in with some damage—we were able to fill advance orders with perfect copies, but that left us just three, not enough to promote it in this email. I hope we'll have replacements by next week.

Just today I got word that the publisher of Sky Masters: The Complete Sundays is willing to sell us another 12 copies. We have backorders for two, so ten are available. We'll probably have these in two to three weeks. [SKYMSH. $125]. It has my highest recommendation. I'm still sad we won't see a reprint, but the publisher is in Spain and the cost of producing it and then getting into into the U.S. distribution system is just prohibitive.

MUSE Signed
Signed bookplate by Dodson. New printing, New cover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Terry Dodson and Denis-Pierre Filippi. Terry Dodson is already a master of the female figure, as evidenced particularly in his fine Bombshells sketchbooks. Here he's taken that eroticism a big step farther, creating a voluptuous, gorgeous heroine in a full graphic story, in the finest tradition of Dean Yeagle's Mandy, Serpieri's Druuna, John Willie's Sweet Gwendoline, Little Annie Fanny and other classics of erotic graphic stories. This is none of those, but it deserves to be in the same class: gorgeous artwork, dramatic storytelling and yet a wonderful vehicle for drawing a tall, long-legged, stunning woman either naked or in various states of undress throughout the story. Humanoids, 2019. Mature Readers...More.

Plus a how-to section about the creation of this cover, with Terry narrating the process step by step. BORN TO DRAW COMICS The Story of Charles Schulz and The Creation of Peanuts
By Ginger Wadsworth. Art Craig Orback. A mixed-panel format picture book biography of Charles "Sparky" Schulz, creator of the beloved comic strip Peanuts. As a child, Charles split his free time between adventures outdoors with his friends and dog Spike, and daydreams and doodles inspired by the comics he loved to read. He longed to become a professional cartoonist, but saw his dreams deferred by unexpected challenges that laid ahead: military deployment to the European front of World War II, and the heartbreak of a family tragedy back home. Even so, Charles never lost sight of the hopeful joy of his early years and his love for Spike, both of which inspired Peanuts. The comic strip went on to become the most popular and influential in comics history. Henry Holt, 2019...More.

PEANUTS DELL ARCHIVE

Highly Recommended. By Charles Schulz. In collection for the first time ever! Charles never let his strip out of his hands, so when Dell wanted to do a Peanuts comic book, he took time off from the strip and drew these special covers and stories, unique to the series. For that reason, these have never been included with the widely distributed newspaper strip collections. Published through the 1950s and 60s, the Dell Peanuts comic strips were drawn by Charles M. Schulz with a little help from his friends. These truly classic comics will delight any Peanuts fan, collector and newbie alike. kaboom!, 2018...More.

JOSEPH BROADER ARTIFICIAL MEMORY 2020 Calendar
Very limited, fine art oversized calendar. Joseph Broader wrote a book entitled A New System of Artificial Memory, Applied to General History, Chronology, etc., Ancient and Modern in London in 1827. Today this is incredibly rare, with only five copies recorded in holdings in the U.S. The engravings symbolically and pictorially portray the history of the world by century, beginning with the 7th century B.C.E. and ending at 1827. The plates were intended to serve as a mnemonic device -- a visual aid to assist with recall of historical chronology and important events and dates. A devoted art fan in the Bay Area has produced fine, very high quality calendars featuring this vintage artwork. Each is spiral bound, printed on very heavy stock, oversized, and enclosed in a handsome clear-view sleeve. Calligraphics, 2019...More.

PIN-UP HISTORY 2020 Calendar
Highly Recommended. Hot, sexy ladies, several fully nude, by various pin-up artists from the 1940s and 50s. I recognize two or three by Fritz Willis, a sharp early "blue boom" full nude, a very steamy full nude lady posed in her bedroom, one "artists' sketchbook" piece, an island girl in revealing sarong, an apple picker with her dress caught on a ladder, a Las Vegas showgirl in topless lingerie, two classic early pin-up poses, again both topless. Good varety of images, perhaps one Elvgren. Tushita, 2019. Mature Readers...More.

MODERN MASTERS Volume 28 Eric Powell
Closeout Price!
Recommended. By Jorge Khoury and Eric Nolen-Weathington. Introduction by Robert Ben Garant. Eric Powell is a sick, sick man. Sick.. .but brilliant. How else would he have been able to come up with a concept like The Goon? A smarter-than-he-looks brute raised by carnies who run the city's underworld while protecting it from being overrun by zombies. How could anyone not love that idea? Especially as told through the words and illustrations of Eric Powell. He's an amazing penciler, a wizard with a brush, and shows a great sense of color and composition in his painting. He also has a blazing wit and a story telling style that complements his artwork perfectly. And Powell's five Eisner Awards merely confirm the fact that he is truly a Modern Master! News and Notes

Comics Fandom is a little poorer this week, with the loss of Bill Schelly. No one did more to chronicle and preserve the early history of comics fanzines and their creators. And Bill's biographies of comics professionals are among the most thorough and enjoyable ever published. Rob Salkowitz in ICv2 wrote a wonderful piece that I could not agree with more. He gave me permission to include it here:

Word spread over the weekend that comics historian Bill Schelly died last week at the age of 67. Schelly was part of the original generation of comic fans and fanzine contributors from the 1960s, a period documented in his book Sense of Wonder: My Life in Comics Fandom. He became one of the most serious and diligent scholars of the medium, publishing substantial and well-researched biographies of creators....

Schelly's death came as a shock since few knew he was ill. In fact, he'd been struggling with health issues over the summer and got a diagnosis of multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) in late August. He succumbed to complications from the treatment, according to his friend, writer John Lustig. "To many, Bill was the greatest historian and biographer that the comic book community has ever had," wrote Lustig. "To those of us who knew him personally, he was also a kind, considerate and witty friend."

All of us who write about comics and live in a world where comics receive respect as an artform and part of America's cultural tradition owe Schelly and his generation a huge debt. Those early fans built the groundwork, established the rules of the road, and created the institutions – from communities to conventions – that we enjoy today. They did it all under the disapproving glares of their peers who mocked their passion and a culture that considered comics worthless or worse. Schelly felt even stronger pressures as a gay man who did not come to terms with his sexuality until much later in life.

Bill was a gentle man of great depth and an unsung giant in our business. He will be greatly missed.

https://icv2.com/articles/columns/view/44068/r-i-p-bill-schelly-other-comics-news

My friend Michelle Nolan was very good friends with Bill, living just 90 minutes away from his place in Seattle. They shared a love of comics and a passion for comics history and its creators. Michelle wrote this for a memorial that will be held at OAFCon next month:

Bill Schelly left us far too soon, for he had established himself as the best author of biographies in the world of comics. He had much more to contribute to his list of distinguished biographies of brilliant creators such as Harvey Kurtzman, John Stanley, Joe Kubert, Otto Binder, James Warren and others. Nobody ever worked harder to be comprehensive and yet always fair to his subjects.

Bill was a dear friend, filled with integrity, good will, great ideas, and a heartfelt love and respect for fandom. I recall what an honor my friend Bud Plant and I felt at being included in Bill's seminal book, "The Founders of Comic Fandom." He was not only a fine writer but a genuine friend and scrupulously accurate historian of a fandom now more than 50 years old.

I recall being filled with joy a couple of years ago when Bill won the Eisner Award for best book for "Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created Mad and Revolutionized Humor in America." This was not only the best comics-related biography I had ever read, but one of the best biographies, period. With this book, Bill fulfilled his longtime dream of contributing something really meaningful to the history of American pop culture.

Rest in Peace, Bill. You really did biography better than anyone ever has.
