ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #61 Earl Moran
Highly Recommended. Art by Earl Moran and Thomas Nast. Finally, a feature article on the long neglected sexy pin-up illustrations of the brilliant Earl Moran, perhaps best remembered for his pin-up paintings featuring a young and unknown Marilyn Monroe--and many nudes! In his time, his images were as widely known as those of Elvgren and Vargas. Numerous examples of his original art, printed tear sheets and covers, and rare, previously unpublished photographs. Also: Thomas Nast, best known of the late 1800s editorial cartoonists. Illustrated Press, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: IL61
Magazine, 8x11, 80pg, Partial Color
$15.00

All available back issues are on our website, along with his Illustrated Press Art Books. Haddom Sundblom should be out in September, and next up are books on Pruett Carter, Mead Schaeffer, and the pin-up master, Enoch Bolles! These three are not on our website yet, but will be when formally announced.

Nothing before has been written about these highly talented artists and this special is packed with dramatic cover art scanned directly from the originals. ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY SPECIAL #3 The Art of Don Lawrence
Our Highest Recommendation. By Diego Cordoba. With Don Lawrence. From British art magazine Illustrators Quarterly comes a long overdue look at the illustrations and comic strip art of Don Lawrence. He is regarded as one of the truly greats of British comic strip art and there has never been a book devoted to his whole career. The volume has examples of his wonderful illustrations from Look and Learn, Ranger, and Once Upon a Time as well as comic strips Karl the Viking, Olac the Gladiator, better known in the U.S. due to long-ago editions, The Trigan Empire and Storm. THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS
Our Highest Recommendation. Collected in a single volume for the first time, this classic of comic strip adaptation brings to life all the action and poignancy of Alexandre Dumas' novel and its sequels. Arturo Del Castillo was one of the greatest masters of the comic strip. His artistic skill is recognised internationally and his great artistry on The Three MusketeersThe Man in the Iron Mask, and The King's Musketeers (all included here) is regarded as some of the finest pen and ink work ever created for comic strips. PLANET OF THE APES Visionaries
Reimagining of a sci-fi classic. Recommended. By By Rod Serling and Dana Gould. Art by Chad Lewis. Based on the original screenplay for Planet of the Apes by The Twilight Zone‘s Rod Serling. On the road to making the landmark science-fiction classic, 20th Century Fox commissioned Serling to adapt the source material. His first draft, which was drastically revised before filming, is a radically different vision of the franchise than the one the world has come to know and love. Now, for the first time in any medium, that vision is fully realized as a graphic novel adapted by acclaimed actor/comedian/writer Dana Gould (The Simpsons) and Chad Lewis (Avengers Origins). THE PROVOCATIVE COLETTE
Adapted from the 1st publication in France in 2017. Recommended. By Annie Goetzinger. From her marriage at the age of 20, until her divorce, the exotic life of Moulin Rouge dancer and performer Colette. Incredibly complex, powerfully determined, truly gifted, Colette challenged herself to reinvent her life and assert herself as a free woman. In her day, her behavior scandalized and vexed the establishment. But in the end, she helped to free women in their thinking. From her voluptuous performance in a see-through costume in "Egyptian Dream"--the story of an Egyptologist who falls in love with a mummy...to president of France's prestigious Académie Goncourt, among many other honors as one of France's preeminent authors. Nudity, sexual situations. NBM, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

THE COMPLETE CASES OF INSPECTOR ALLHOFF Volume 1
From Dime Detective, 1938-46. By D.L. Champion. Brilliant, decisive, and hard-charging, Deputy Inspector Allhoff was the NYPD's ace detective until bullets from a mobster's machine gun robbed him of his legs, his career, and—in the opinion of an associate—his sanity. Created by D.L. Champion, Inspector Allhoff defied most conventions of detective-pulp fiction. He could never be confused for one of Raymond Chandler's knights errant, trudging down those mean streets. Allhoff was no Rover Boy in trench coat and fedora. He was, in fact, a sadist and a psychopath! Altus, 2014...More.

THE COMPLETE CASES OF SEEKAY
From Strange Detective Mysteries and Detective Tales, 1937-38. By Paul Ernst. Art by John Fleming Gould. Introduction by Will Murray. News and Notes

Russ Heath leaves us

He was a brilliant artist who never asked for the limelight. He just quietly did his job in his own fashion...with accuracy to detail, with superb design, with brilliant inking. The Haunted Tank, Sgt. Rock, The Sea Devils, so much wonderful work for Atlas in one story after another in the 1950s. And Atlas covers, too!

I didn’t know Russ well, but well enough to say hello and catch up when he came by my booth at shows, such as the old WonderCon in Oakland. I’m fortunate to own one of his recreations, thanks to dealer Steve Wyatt. Steve was who representing Russ and offered it to me. Here it is. Russ’ father was the model for the sheriff in back.

And here is a link to our Facebook page with a very good article from the Heritage Auctions site.

PRINCE VALIANT Volume 17
Sunday Pages, 1969-70. Our Highest Recommendation. By Hal Foster. Foreword by Brian M. Kane with Kim Thompson. After his long sojourn in the Mediterranean, Prince Valiant is back in Britain, where he takes on a new, intricate mission on behalf of King Arthur. Gawain's return journey to Camelot is fraught with misadventure as he is beset by jealous romantic rivals, a marriage-minded widow and a thieving sorcerer. Young Galan goes on a hunt to capture the fabled unicorn, and Arn, after losing his horse in a Welsh bog, is enslaved and held for ransom. Fantagraphics, 2018...More.

THE PRINCE VALIANT PAGE
Our Highest Recommendation. By Gary Gianni. Foreword by Mike Mignola. Modern illustration master Gianni opens the vaults to his work on the legendary Prince Valiant Sunday Page, written by Mark Schultz. Gianni assumed the helm of the strip after John Cullen Murphy but far too few fans have seen his several years of pages, let alone the amazing work behind the published pages...until now. Every aspect of the new era of the strip is covered here, with a particular focus on Gianni's preliminary sketches and production methods. Flesk, 2008...More.

HEROES OF THE HOME FRONT Bell Features Artists of WWII Deluxe Signed
Limited to 110 signed copies in slipcase. Highly Recommended. By Ivan Kocmarek. Forewords by Gerald Lazare and John Bell. Signed by Gerald Lazare and author Ivan Kocmarek. Foil-stamped slipcase. A massive 300+ page book including 150 full-page reproductions of original art pages, plus backstories and special interviews with the artists. Canada banned American comics during the Second World War, precipitating an explosion of homegrown comics from young publishers and creators. One of these was Bell Features, and it put out comics touting the exploits of heroes like Nelvana of the Northern Lights, the first Canadian super-heroine who preceeded even Wonder Woman. And Johnny Canuck, Speed Savage, The Brain, Nitro, The Dreamer, Doc Stearne (yes, of Mr. Monster fame), and Super Commando. 2018...More.

As I write this, the trade edition is virtually out of print. We had wanted to bring in more, but the publisher is reserving the balance of the run to provide to Canadian libraries. We have just 1 in stock, and 6 more coming any day now. That's it. With the Deluxe Edition we have 12 in stock, and I don't know if we can get any more. The total printing of the two editions together was just 450 copies.

BATMAN THE CAPED CRUSADER Volume 1
By Jim Starlin, Mike Baron et al. Art by Jim Aparo, Ross Andru et al. Gotham City has endured much through its dark, twisted history, and even the cosmic changes wrought by the Crisis on Infinite Earths couldn't give the town a fresh start--the grime is in its DNA. The Crisis did, though, allow for the reintroduction of familiar foes, albeit with a fresh take on the Caped Crusader featuring a back-to-basics approach to crime-fighting. DC, 2018...More.

CORTO MALTESE Volume 8 Tango
By Hugo Pratt. Just as Fable of Venice was Hugo Pratt's homage to his hometown, Tango is a nod to Buenos Aires, where the cartoonist lived during his earliest creative successes in the late 1940s and 1950s. The atmosphere of the story is steeped in the sensual music of the tango, whose melodies almost seem to emerge from the artwork, with close-ups of the dance steps framed by Pratt with extraordinary effectiveness. The first English-language translation of Hugo Pratt's graphic novel set in Argentina. IDW, 2018...More.

Highlights from the History of the World's Greatest Super Heroes By Robert Greenberger. In the hands of dozens of writers and artists, DC Comics Justice League of America (JLA) has experienced moments that can be intensely personal or of great cosmic importance. The comic's ability to shift in tone has always kept the team interesting and reflects the changing tastes among the readers and the times when each moment occurred. STAR HAWKS Volume 3 1979-1981
By Archie Goodwin, Roger McKenzie. Art by Gil Kane. This classic 1970s science-fiction newspaper strip predates Star Wars—and nearly 40 years after its debut, Star Hawks remains fresh and exciting for new generations of sci-fi and fantasy fans. This third volume concludes the series, collecting more than 500 strips drawn by Gil Kane, written by Archie Goodwin, and set in the "Barnum System" that series creator Ron Goulart also used in several of his novels. The Library of American Comics edition reproduces the daily strips two per page and each Sunday strip on its own page so readers can relish Gil Kane's incredible achievement. IDW, 2018...More.

Tarzan

TARZAN OF THE APES Dust Jacket Signed
Signed by Phil Normand. Limited to 300. Highly Recommended. Produced by Phil Normand. Art by Fred J. Arting. Phil Normand caught our eye when he did the new, first-ever coloring of the cover image by Frazetta for Tarzan and the Castaways, Canaveral Press, 1964. Phil is a #1 ERB fan, and has been reconstructing the original first edition jackets, like this one, as well as creating new variant jackets for classic ERB books. This was one of his earliest efforts and we are pleased to make it available. The artwork has been meticulously restored and the paper is 80# cover< stock in a color that closely matches the original. This is fine art letterpress printing using wood-mounted magnesium plates. Comes with full production details on a certificate of authentication, signed and dated by Phil Normand and a bookmark, also letter press printed, repeating the cover artwork along with details of the original A.C. McClurg edition. Recoverings, 2004...More.

TARZAN CASTAWAYS Dust Jacket Signed
Almost Gone! Signed by Normand and numbered from 64 copies. Our Highest Recommendation. Phil Normand's new, first-ever coloring of the cover image by Frazetta for Tarzan and the Castaways, Canaveral Press, 1964. This was one of our very favorite images in the Edgar Rice. Burroughs 100 Years Chronology, so we are pleased to also offer it in its original form, as a variant, new cover for the original book (which was printed in b&w with an awful red banner across the art). Comes with two bookmarks, one with full details of the original book. The jacket includes the original flaps and back cover typography and design, with a color image of the ad for Richard Lupoff’s Master of Adventure, ready either for display or use with the original book. Recoverings, 2016. Out of Print....More.

Mature Readers

We have a very unusual new graphic novel this week: Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini. Well, Minky is also the girl getting tied up, sans clothing, in this unusual and fairly explicit erotic graphic novel offering an alternate look at Houdini's weird world.

Next from one of our favorite editors, Hiroshi Unno, comes a book, Dark & Fetish Art, unlike any of his other fine collections. This is his first compilation (published in Japan) of erotic art, and it's rich with amazing work from yesterday.

And back in stock at a sale price is the Fantagraphics book Sexytime: "1970s trash cinema movie posters the likes of which have never been collected between hard covers before. B-Movie Bikers, beatniks, disturbed artists, witchcraft, familial dysfunction, evil corporations, lost girls..."

And we have two new DVDs: Liquid Assets, starring Samatha Fox, Sharon Kane, and Lisa B. And Showdown: Back in the Saddle Again!, starring Gina Carerra, Sharon Mitchell, and Shanna McCollough.
