More about Edmond-François Calvo:

Born in 1892 in Elbeuf, France, he was in the army in the First World War, and started publishing cartoons in the 1920s. He had many different jobs, including working as a woodcarver and an innkeeper, until 1938 when he became a full-time artist. Most of his work had animals as the main characters, which together with his popularity and productivity gave him the nickname "The French Walt Disney".

His best known work is La bête est morte (The Beast is Dead), started clandestinely in 1942, published as a book after the liberation of France, in two parts, in 1944-1945, a satire on the second World War with the different countries depicted as different animals, a style that would later be used by Art Spiegelman in his graphic novel Maus.

News & Notes

West Coast Fires

Due to winds and fire danger, we had our power shut off on Tuesday and Wednesday after Labor Day Holiday. But we caught up by the end of last week. We'll try and get our message about that up on our home page as soon as we can, if it happens again. Hopefully, that's it for the year, but no guarantees. When we lose power, we're toast. The phones have to go to a recording, and we can't process or ship orders. Last year, in 2019, we had 4 days like that.

Flesk News

Spectrum 27 will ship early this year, sometime in October. You can reserve both HC and SC now. Flesk is down to his last 50 copies of The Big Tease by Bruce Timm. We still have 25 copies, but once they are gone, we'll have to fill backorders with the 2nd printing, due in October.

Classic Comics Press News

Rusty Riley Volume 2 is back on schedule and due by the Spring of 2021. Cisco Kid Volume 6 will be ready late Spring/early Summer 2021, with planned volumes up to 8, reprinting the entire run of The Cisco Kid! A move forced this publisher to white sale their backlist, and you can still score titles on sale on our website. Lance is nearly gone at this price, and other titles are low in stock, so take a look. Also coming from Classic Comics Press are Cannonball Carmody by Leonard Starr, Casey Ruggles Vol 2, and an art book on Frank Godwin.

Out of Print Report

Now gone are Illustration Magazine 45, Austin Briggs, Lady Death Masterpieces signed, and Lady Death More Naughty signed.

Lady Death Naughtier with the Ebas cover is down to 3 left.

Secrets of Sinister House is down to 7 copies.

Reynold Brown: A Life in Pictures has just 3 left.

Art of Daniel Merriam 2021 Calendar is down to 10 copies.

The Art of Dean Cornwell, The Art of Rafael DeSoto, and Stanley Meltoff: Picture Maker have all been announced as no longer available from the publisher, but we will have copies of each, from 15 to 25. Act now.
