Auad Publishing File Copies, Part 2

Almost Gone! Our Highest Recommendation. Born in the Philippines, Alex Niño is today considered one of the best comic artists in the United States. He began working for DC Comics during the 1970s "Filipino Invasion" but quickly revealed himself to be totally unique in his imaginative work. Fans used to wonder what drugs he was taking, but he claims everything comes from his amazing imagination. His first "Art of" book, Satan's Tears, quickly sold out and became a legend, rare to find and highly sought-after. He offers innovation, superb draftsmanship, and breathtaking design that defies the imagination. Auad Publishing, 2008. Out of Print....More.

Almost Gone! Highly Recommended. Edited by Manuel Auad. Introduction by Will Eisner. Foreword by Joe Kubert. Spanish artist Jordi Bernet is known for his work on such comics as Torpedo 1936, Custer, Sarvan, Clara de Noche, Tex and Kraken. He first appeared in American comics in a 2001 Batman story for DC. With his emotionally expressive, bold and ironic style, Bernet has established himself as one of the masters of realistic comics. Clara and the adult and violent themes of Torpedo portray an artist comfortable with erotica and adult themes. Comic stories, sketches, studies and tributes by fellow artists such as Jordi Langaron, Carlos Nine, Eduardo Risso, Sergio Aragonés, Carlos Trillo and others. Auad, 2003. Out of Print. AUSTIN BRIGGS The Consummate Illustrator
Limited, 1000. Highly Recommended. By David Apatoff. Foreword by Austin Briggs, Jr. From Auad Publishing in their Famous American Magazine Illustrators series: 160 pages of some of Austin Briggs‘ best black and white art and a great selection of color illustrations, most taken from originals. David Apatoff's comprehensive in-depth biography of Briggs was aided by an extensive interview with his son, Austin Briggs, Jr. Watch the Briggs style develop, from a pulp artist and Flash Gordon newspaper strip illustrator in fine line, inspired by Joseph Clement Coll, to a sophisticated artist doing story illustrations and automobile ads, reminding us of Ernie Fuchs and Alex Toth. Graphic Novels

Original 3-part novel. Fact & Fiction Afterward by Ennis. Highly Recommended. By Garth Ennis. Art by P.J. Holden. Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy began World War II with aircraft that could devastate enemy warships and merchantmen at will. But Britain's Royal Navy had only the Fairey Swordfish, a biplane torpedo bomber in an age of monoplanes. It was underpowered and undergunned; a museum piece, an embarrassment. Its crews fully expected to be shot from the skies. Instead, they flew this novel plane legend -- against the Italian Fleet at Taranto and integral in sinking the Bismarck, to the deadly challenge of the famous Channel Dash as German ships tried to slip through the English Channel. Dead Reckoning, 2020...More.

Item Code: STRINGB
Hard Cover, 7x11, 192pg,

Publisher Dead Reckoning has done a number of fine and quite unusual graphic novels, which look at aspects of WWII that have never before been addressed this way. See all their titles on our website. They include Churchill, Smedley, Once Upon a Time in France, Stalingrad Letter from the Volga, All Quiet on the Western Front, Night Witches, and Katusha: Girl Soldier of the Great Patriotic War.

Their first collection was the excellent, first-ever look at the popular comic strip and comic book title from The Golden Age: The Best of Don Winslow of the Navy [BEDWH. $29.95].

Signed & limited, 500! Highly Recommended. By Patrick Loehr. Introduction by Nathan Ballingrud. An unusual graphic novel, a dark, coming of age narrative about two young boys and a gun. Set in rural Colorado, the story exposes a somber world wherein notions of growing up are deeply intertwined with the mystique of firearms and family stories. The young narrator's eagerness to grow up compels him towards actions that ultimately shatter his childhood. The richly illustrated volume drawn in a surreal, ghostly style, is awash in muted textures of brown and gray--visually appropriate for this dark, thought-provoking tale. We like it, and it's quite a handsome production. Centipede Press, 2019...More.

Fantasy Art

THE MOUNTAIN OF SMOKE By Jeffrey Alan Love Signed
Boldly Signed with an ethereal doodle! from 500 copies. Limited to just our initial order. 51 paintings in acrylic, ink and pencil, which took him seven months to complete. The result is a wordless graphic novel of fantasy, where you create the story. Or simply a collection of outré fantastic scenes of a journey, otherworldly creatures, a bold warrior and a quest. Jeff is now sharing these personal works for the first time. The viewer follows along as the artist loses himself in his practice of letting his mind wander to see what it unveils. Showcases Jeff's textures and paint strokes to give viewers the intimacy of holding the actual sketchbook. Half of the paintings are accompanied by the artist's short captions and initial pencil sketches. Flesk, 2020...More.

Item Code: MOUND
Hard Cover, 12x9, 128pg, b&w

We only got one shot at this signed, advance edition. The regular edition will not be available until August, but you can order it now [MOUNH. $34.95]. Also due in August is The Thousand Demon Tree [THODT. $24.95].

Highly Recommended. A massive 224-page collection of drawings and paintings from the sold-out 2017 releases of Familiars, Flora and Fauna, and Viscera. This collection leads us on a journey into the violent, steaming innards of making art--raw, spontaneous and unfettered. Drawing on themes of the occult and the erotic, the artist explores animals as allegories for the human condition, and beautiful nude women interacting with this fantasy world. Flesk, 2020. Here's several more recommended fantasy art books. These are all excellent books by single artists who also work with creature development, nudes, and imaginative design work:

Almost Gone! Recommended. By Lois van Baarle. Following the success of her first art book, Loish returns with an inspiring book dedicated to her beautiful b&w and full color sketches with an emphasis on cute young women, from figure studies to handsome fantasy pieces. Also here are guys, animals, landscapes and offbeat subjects like fantasy animals, faeries, even doodles. A unique look into Loish's creative processes and idea generation, accompanied by her own comments. Discover how she explores gesture, stylization, and sketching for animation. 3dtotal, 2018. Signed! With 5x8 postcard promoting the book. Recommended. By Rick Berry. Foreword Neil Gaiman. Without preliminary sketching or planning, each painting evolves from random, expressive marks into figures--mostly women--simultaneously evoking movement and emotion. 49 original works in Berry's unique generative style, painted in mixed media. "Rick Berry is, to my mind, the most interesting and versatile artist currently working, conjuring faces and bodies and worlds out of formless chaos...Nothing's abstract, nothing's realistic. Patterns and shapes become flesh and people, clouds and fox-tails." -Neil Gaiman, Some nudity. Quality squarebound softcover with cover flaps. Donald M. Grant, 2019. Mature Readers...More.

DESCANTS & CADENCES The Art of Stephanie Law Signed
Signed! Recommended. A new artist to us but one with superlative fantasy work and fine, fine technical skills. From fairies and beautiful fantasy women, to--really--the most amazing illustrations of insects such as bees and dragonflies we have seen. We can only compare this side of her work to the great E.J. Detmold, who could actually romanticize insects with his high level of skill at water color and capturing the exact moment of dynamics. Law does this also, along with excellent design and creativity. Three new Moebius books appeared last year—this one was the first to sell out. The other two are still available:

Expanded, limited edition, 3000. Highly Recommended. By Moebius. Moebius at his best, creating Martian monsters and landscapes, insane and astonishing. Interview and brief captions in French only. First published in 2011 in a limited edition, now larger size and with sixteen new pages in full color. Moebius speaks: "Everyone knows by now that Mars is sterile. Yet still we send at great cost robots equipped with small shovels that stubbornly dig remote arid soil in the hope of finding huddled fossils of ancient bacteria. I found it easier and less costly in terms of technology investment to get hold of a blank book and leave the pen running over the paper at random as if in a dream." Recommended. By Luis Royo. Divided into two books with a clear difference. The first gathers images designed to walk freely through Luis Royo's eternal dreams around the fantasy and the female world, while the second collects specific work done to carry out a project, a cover or specific to a book. The paths of these pages are flooded by the female figure. The protagonist, the "goddess," is a constant in Royo's work. Some nudity. Norma Editorial, 2020. Due July. Mature Readers...More.

The master of erotic art takes on a famous historical battle! Recommended. By Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri. Introduction by Roberto Guarino and Matteo Pollone. A new novel describing the famous Custer's battle. With his astonishing drawings Serpieri takes us to the battlefield of Little Big Horn, the most famous armed clash between a combined force of Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho against the 7th Cavalry of the US army, headed by General Custer. From the sexy Druuna to this is a leap, but he has done historical-oriented work at times in Druuna's travels through time. I think this is going to be very good, and probably accurate in its historical detail. Lo Scarabeo, 2019. Due July. ...More.

Item Code: LITBH

The Eclipse of Classicism By Vern Grosvenor Swanson. Plucked from oblivion, Godward serves as the last best example of 19th century Greco-Roman Classicism. Of a reclusive nature and painting in a style completely out-of-date with post-war Europe, his genius remained obscure. Godward's brilliance, with the recent revival of interest in his fallow Classicists, Alma-Tadema and Lord Leighton, is only now coming to light. Godward's art sought to portray peace, feminine beauty and ideal perfection in an age careening headlong into atrocity. He did so by marvelously painted and composed pictures of beautiful women in halycon classical environments. He was a niche painter whose subject, while arresting, was narrow. However, only Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was better at painting this genre of "patrician women on marble benches'". Antique Collectors' Club, 1998. Very Fine/ As New. Symbolism in Britain 1860-1910 By Andrew Wilton. European symbolism has been much investigated, with some British exponents of the movement being given a place in those accounts. But it has always been assumed that Symbolism was essentially a Continental phenomenon, having only marginal links with what happened in Great Britain in the late 19th century. This text reverses that view by focusing on key British artists, some of whom predate their Continental colleagues in dealing with the characteristic themes of Symbolism and showing their close links with European centres such as Brussels and Paris. Comic Archives & Graphic Novels

Art by Wallace Wood. Edited by J. David Spurlock. There's crime here, and bad girls, and the amazing-looking women that made Wood a favorite as soon as he joined EC. He did these wild stories for Avon, Fox, and other early 1950s publishers. These rare and valuable collectors-item stories have NEVER appeared in any book. They are often so obscure that long-time fans (like myself) are still out looking for them. And then there is the wonderful Avon material, which now is very sought after. Okay, this is romance and that's not everyone's cup of tea--but on the other hand, it's Wood doing it. Can't get much better than that. Vanguard, 2014. ...More.

Art by Vaughn Bode and Mark Bode. Story by Larry Todd. Cobalt 60 is one of the darkest, if not THE darkest, projects in Vaughn Bode's work. A post-apocalypse punch in the face, it's grim, ultra-violent and despairing, and comes with a killer ending that, like Bode's earlier The Man, shows The Cartoon Gooroo's mastery at delineating big themes with a minimum of words. He was an artist who wrote, rather than a writer who drew, and that's never clearer than here. Vaughn originally created Cobalt 60 in 1959, but the death dealing mutant didn't see print until 1968, in an issue of Wally Wood's Witzend, in the process winning him the Hugo award for Best Fanzine Artist of that year. By Hajime Sorayama. Sorayama's work Sexy Robot, published by Genko-sha in 1983, made his organic robotic forms famous around the world. For the work, he used ideas from pin-up art, which in the book then appear as chrome-plated gynoids in suggestive poses. His next book, Pin-up, continues in the same line. A number of his other works similarly revolve around figures in suggestive poses, including highly realistic depictions in latex and leather. Second Printing. By John Willie. This is the original tribute to John Alexander Scott Coutts (1902-1962), a.k.a. John Willie, and his popular underground heroine! Willie still stands as the finest bondage artist ever and his stories of Sweet Gwen are classics, first published in rarely-seen specialty magazines of the late 1940s and early '50s. Included are complete Gwendoline stories in ink and wash, as our poor girl gets tied up, gagged, put into a tight corset, and far more, often by dominating women and even by her own friend, a leather-clad secret agent. Willie's work nearly always had an innocence of sorts--it's never violent or truly threatening. Gwendoline's naiveté is both sweet and erotic, as she submits to one domination after another. Most in b&w  with some scarce color images. Belier Press, 1974. Fine. There are a few wrinkles on the spine and back of the dust jacket....More.
