Just Arrived

Our Highest Recommendation. By Robert Kanigher, Garth Ennis et al. Art by Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, Alex Toth, John Severin, Jack Kirby et al. In this new collection, DC is recognizing nearly 80 years of comic book war stories beginning with the origin of Blackhawk in Military #1, 1941, Boy Commandos by S&K in 1942, on to the beginnings of Sgt. Rock, the origin of Enemy Ace, The Losers, The Unknown Soldier, the very first Haunted Tank, and my favorite piece, a graphic novel length War in Heaven, bringing Enemy Ace into World War II and reluctant combat to defend his German homeland, beautifully told and illustrated by Ennis and Russ Heath. Powerful stuff, first page to last. DC Comics, 2020...More.

This features, for the first time, spectacular full-color reprints of every story from those first two years of his career, 1953-54. Beginning with Ditko's very first story, in Fantastic Fears, to his short stint in the Joe Simon/Jack Kirby studio and appearances in their Black Magic, to Ditko's eventual encampment at Charlton Comics in 1954, readers will see the initial works of an artist already at a level of craftsmanship that exceeded most of his peers. Stories from The Thing, Space Adventures, Racket Squad, Strange Suspense Stories, This Magazine is Haunted... Fantagraphics, 2014...More.

STEVE DITKO ARCHIVES Volume 5 Dripping With Fear
Closeout Price! Highly Recommended. Edited by Blake Bell. 200+ meticulously restored, full-color pages from Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko in his early prime, at the time working in near anonymity for Charlton Comics in the then-popular horror/suspense genre. Comics like Tales of The Mysterious Traveler and This Magazine Is Haunted saw an explosion in Ditko's ingenuity, as he manipulated the traditional comic-book page layout with masterful results. Cold War tales of mystery and suspense, circa 1958. Ditko's angular, severe artwork heightens the uncanniness of stories about mermaids, mad scientists, and alien invasions. Fantagraphics, 2015...More.

Item Code: SRA05H

STEVE DITKO ARCHIVES Volume 6 Outer Limits
Closeout Price! 1958-59. Highly Recommended. By Steve Ditko. Edited by Blake Bell. Pre-Marvel Ditko! Suspense and mystery stories, quintessential space travel epics. Ditko rocketed into the vast outer reaches of the universe to craft tales that tapped into the fears and aspirations of middle America coming to terms with the Cold War and the beginning of the space race with Soviet Russia. All from the Charlton group, from titles like Space Adventures, Outer Space, Black Fury, Unusual Tales... We're also treated to several fun western stories, a genre we rarely see Ditko tackling. Fantagraphics, 2016...More.

Item Code: SRA06H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color
$39.99 $19.99

We also have the other three volumes in this Steve Ditko Archives series. Volumes 2 and 4 are at regular $39.99 price, and are special order items (allow extra time).

Gruelle's painterly color makes every page look like it was created on a canvas. Here we have Nemo mixed with the Wizard of Oz.There are episodes that take place in space, under water, on pirate-infested rivers, with talking animals of all sorts, from crows to birds to bugs. The kids have adventures all over the map. Mr. Twee Deedle is a magical wood sprite who befriends the strip's two human children. Gruelle depicts a charming, fantastical child's world, filled with light whimsy and outlandish fantasy. Fantagraphics, 2012...More.

DALI The Paintings
By Robert Descharnes and Gilles Neret. Art by Salvador Dali. This weighty volume is the most complete study of Dalí's painted works ever published. After years of research, the authors located paintings by the master that had been inaccessible for years--so many, in fact, that almost half the featured illustrations appear in public for the first time in this book. More than a catalogue raisonné, this book contextualizes Dalí's oeuvre and its meanings by examining contemporary documents, from writings and drawings to material from other facets of his work, including ballet, cinema, fashion, advertising, and objets d'art. Taschen, 2020...More.

Item Code: DALIPH
Hard Cover, 9x10, 752pg, Partial Color

WALTER SIMONSON'S The Mighty Thor Artisan Edition

Each page has been scanned from the original art in Walter Simonson's personal archives, insuring that these complete stories are presented as closely as possible to the actual hand-drawn artwork. While appearing to be in black and white, these pages have been meticulously scanned in color so all the subtle nuances of the art are clearly visible, from blue pencil notations, gradients in the ink, plus more--all those wonderful things that make original art unique. IDW, 2020...More.

RONIN ISLAND Volume 2 For the Island
Recommended. By Greg Pak. Art by Giannis Milonogiannis. Kenichi and Hana gew up together but at the far ends of town--elite and peasant. Now they are both samurai warriors, of a sort, though Hana is a tomboy who scarcely acts like a girl. They are fighting both an invasion of monsters plus a crazed Shogun who wants to harness the creatures to create his own private insane an idea as it sounds. And both are trying to protect the island from which they came, and save it from either invader? After their harrowing journey to the mainland to reason with the Shogun's forces, young Hana and Kenichi have been separated, forced to find their own ways back to the Island... Boom!, 2020...More.

Fantagraphics Sale Part 1

We have 18 Fantagraphics titles now on sale. We'll be listing the others in the next two weeks' emails. Click on the banner above and catch any more we've gotten online, it was too many to do all at once. We begin with my very favorite, and my second very favorite, out of all of the titles:
FROM SHADOW TO LIGHT The Life And Art of Mort Meskin
Closeout Price! Our Highest Recommendation. By Steven Brower. Part coffee-table art book, part investigative biography, this studies Meskin's career from the Golden Age of Comics to his advertising and fine art done near the end of his life. Hugely influential but still obscure to most fans, Meskin profoundly influenced artists like Jim Steranko, Joe Kubert, Alex Toth, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. He shared a studio and some of his best strips with Batman artist Jerry Robinson. He was first to draw Sheena of the Jungle, he created The Vigilante and Johnny Quick, and did brilliant work on both of these DC heroes, as well illustrated here. Fantagraphics, 2010...More.

Item Code: FROSH
Hard Cover, 10x13, 220pg, Full Color
$39.99 $19.99

We're also bringing back into stock the 2012 companion book for this, with complete stories, also compiled by Steven Brower, Out of the Shadows [OUTSHA. $26.99, $23.99]. You can order it anytime; we should have copies by June 1.

Highly Recommended. By Steven Brower. Art by Jack Davis, John Romita, Neal Adams, Lou Fine and dozens more. Signed bookplate! Our Highest Recommendation. By Neil Gaiman. Art by Colleen Doran. A chilling fantasy retelling of the Snow White fairy tale by New York Times bestselling creators Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran! A not-so-evil queen is terrified of her monstrous stepdaughter, Snow White--who literally murders the king. Roles are reversed and this evil creature cannot be destroyed. We added an illustrated bookplate signed by Colleen before I knew just how beautiful a work this is. Colleen's art and design (there are very few actual panels) are inspired by Art Nouveau illustrator and stained glass designer Harry Clarke. This is gorgeous, page after page!! Adult situations and nudity throughout. Dark Horse, 2019. Mature Readers...More.

Warehouse find, 1980. Recommended. By Howard Chaykin. Swashbucking science fiction hero Cody Starbuck was created by comic book artist Howard Chaykin and debuted in the first issue of Star Reach magazine in 1974.
Starbuck, an amoral Errol Flynn analogue starred in Chaykin's violent and sexually explicit space opera, appearing infrequently in Mike Friedrich's black and white anthology comic until the character moved to Heavy Metal magazine in 1981. There the character appeared in five issues before disappearing completely. However, the theme of a morally ambivalent and sexually adventurous hero was one that Chaykin would revisit again, most notably in his American Flagg series of the mid-Eighties.
But before Starbuck moved to the science fiction and fantasy digest the character appeared in this portfolio collection released in 1980. SQP, 1980. Out of Print. Very Fine. Envelope slightly smudged and sun damaged....More.

1987-89. Highly Recommended. By Howard Chaykin. Blackhawk is currently in development as a movie from director Steven Spielberg. Howard Chaykin's 1988 miniseries is collected here for the first time. In this new story, Blackhawk is on American soil and in trouble. Accused of Communist leanings, he stumbles across a plot to overthrow the U.S. government and bomb New York City concocted by former Nazis out for revenge. You know the rest of the Blackhawks are close by, ready for aerial combat or on-the-ground fisticuffs. DC Comics, 2020...More.

AMERICAN FLAGG! Definitive Collection
Closeout Price! Highly Recommended. By Howard Chaykin. Introduction by Michael Chabon. In 2031, along with Raul, the smartest talking cat alive, and Luther Ironheart, the stupidest robot ever, and surrounded by a bevy of the most beautiful women of the 21st century, Flagg faces an uphill battle protecting and defending the American way of life...or rather, what's left of it. As a former porn star-turned-cop, he is as unorthodox a good guy as you've ever seen. This sexy, violent and scarily prescient look at the future is my personal favorite work ever from Chaykin, done for First Comics way back in 1983. Image Comics, 2008. Out of Print. Guy Colwell's Inner City Romance is one of our new Fantagraphics sale books, now at half price. Colwell is best known for his very adult Doll graphic novels. Spain's Street Fighting Men is another new Fantagraphics sale title. It has adult content, but not so much, so I've kept it up in the regular section above.

And entirely new this week is Women of the Sun: Bunny Yeager in Mexico. We've never met a bad book featuring Bunny's work. Here she photographs famous models, including Christine Starr, in the ruins of Aztec and Incan temples. Bunny is most famous for her work with Bettie Page and Diane Webber, but she was THE best known woman photographer of her day, and here you will see why. Dozens of publications came out with her classy nudes in the late 1950s and 1960s.

See our website for more Bunny Yeager collections, including two of her original books, signed: How I Photograph Myself [RBA35. $300, $225] and How I Photograph Nudes [RBA36. $150]. Available by special order is Bunny's Betty Page: Queen of Curves [BPQH. $55].
