News & Notes

SNOW DAY(s)!

We were forced into taking most of this week off, Christmas to New Years. You might have caught it on the national news, our Grass Valley area has been hit by a massive snow storm, the likes of which we haven’t seen in 20 or 30 years. We have a massive number of trees down, along with power poles and electrical lines. I’m writing this on Thursday, December 30—we had no power at our warehouse for the first three days this week, not to mention unplowed roads and no internet!

This storm hit us Monday and took down many of the power lines and traffic came to a stop with trees down on roads all over the county. It took myself, my son Philip, and several others an entire day on Tuesday just to chainsaw and clear off my own street, just 3/10 of a mile long. Two trees 40” in diameter and 80 to 100 feet tall were blocking it, as well another half dozen smaller but still significant oaks and pines.

I was finally able to drive on Wednesday, in my 4 wheel drive…only to find the warehouse had no power either. Others of our staff were also snowed in. We got another 5 or 6 inches of snow Tuesday night, on top of 12-18” on Monday. That may not sound like much if you live in colder climates, but our pines and oaks are not used to a snow load like that, especially after a drought here, and they are toppling over and taking down power, phone and internet lines with them.

Four of us are back at the warehouse today, Thursday, but the post office can’t take our mail out until tomorrow! Neither rain nor sleet…well, things have changed! So our oldest orders from last Friday afternoon and the weekend will ship first. This week’s orders will begin shipping out on Monday, when we expect everything will be back to normal. Fingers crossed! We also will not be shipping any orders at all for the entire week. We had planned already to be closed New Year’s Eve, and we are mostly sticking with that. Todd will be here just to let the post office pickup and maybe pack a few more orders.

You can still place orders on the internet. We expect the weather to clear up this weekend!

Thanks for your understanding. And again, have a wonderful new year!

Bud and the staff.

In this full-color coffee-table art book, noted researcher Stephen James Walker presents a complete visual history of the Hank Janson crime fiction series, from its inception in 1946 through to the last of the original novels in 1971, and beyond. Reproductions of every single cover — including, in full-page size and in better quality than ever seen before, all of the classic Reginald Heade painted covers of the 1940s and 1950s, including his foreign editions. Look and Learn drew on artists from across Europe — primarily from Italy and Spain “ as well as on the cream of talent from Britain, Peter Jackson, C. L. Doughty, Ron Embleton and Sep E. Scott, to name but a few. The paper had, indeed, been designed around the work of famous historical artists like Fortunino Matania, who was able to contribute new artwork to the paper in his final years. Book Palace, 2022.
