Special Colour Edition with bonus pages. Highly Recommended. By Adolphe Barreaux. Foreword by Tim Hanley. From DC Comics' secret history. A fascinating new collection of Sally the Sleuth adventures culled from both comics and pulps published by Trojan, a silent arm of Donenfeld's DC Comics in the 1940s and early 50s. With 100 pages in full color! Sally the Sleuth was one of the naughtiest heroines of the golden age. She started in two- and four-page black & white "comic strips" in 1934-43 issues of Spicy Detective Stories, one of the most risque under-the-counter pulps. This collects 65 of those. Then she moved into slightly less sexy but still scandalous comic book stories in Crime Smashers #1-15, all of which are here, right up to 1953. Bedside Press, 2018...More.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Volume 4 The Girl Who Danced With Death
At last, the long awaited continuation of the Lisbeth Salander trilogy. Recommended. Written by Sylvain Runberg. Art by Belen Ortega. In a world of conspiracy and mistrust, their investigation soon leads them to the obscure group known only as "Sparta"... Titan Comics, 2019. Mature Readers...More.

Recommended. By Shaun Tan. A new picture book, for all ages, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Arrival. Cicada tells the story of a hardworking little cicada who is completely unappreciated for what he does. He works in an office but clearly doesn't fit in well with his tiny size and his appetite for green leaves! But in the end, just when you think he's given up, he makes a transformation into something ineffably beautiful. A metaphor for growing up? A bit of inspiration for the unappreciated striver in all of us? Yes, yes, and more. Embossed cover. Athur A. Levine, 2019...More.

DC COMICS BEFORE SUPERMAN Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's Pulp Comics
Introduction by Jim Steranko. Highly Recommended. By Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson and Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson. The Major's granddaughter Nikki and noted comics historian Dave Armstrong have compiled an in-depth look at the formation of National Allied Publications, which would become DC Comics...and the man behind New Fun, New Comics, and more. That would be the Major. As a bonus, Armstrong has carefully sought out and scanned three extremely rare series from these impossible-to-find issues, all written by the Major. The complete run of Barry O'Neill and Fang Gow (art by the superlative Leo O'Mealia), Blood Pearls (art by the innovative and delightfully bizarre Munson Paddock), Foe of the Borgias (art- Sven Elven), The Golden Dragon (art- Tom Hickey) and more! FADEAWAY The Remarkable Imagery of Coles Phillips
Highly Recommended. Introduction by Scott M. Fischer. Coles Phillips (1880–1927) was among the most in-demand illustrators in his field during the 1910s and 20s. A dynamic and highly skilled watercolor artist and draftsman, Phillips created dozens of covers for mainstream American magazines, including Good Housekeeping, Life, and The Saturday Evening Post. This original compilation features more than 80 color plates selected from two of Phillips' early collections, A Gallery of Girls and A Young Man's Fancy, in addition to images from other sources. In 1908 he created his famous "Fade Away Girl," for which he is still most remembered. Dover, 2019...More.

N.C. WYETH Great Illustrations
Highly Recommended. Edited by Jeff Menges. Before Andrew and Jamie, there was N.C. Wyeth, the star pupil at Howard Pyle's Brandywine School. This features more than 100 of Wyeth's most iconic images in full color including scenes from The Last of the Mohicans, Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe, Rip Van Winkle, King Arthur and more. These dramatic visions are loaded with incredible color and dramatic hubris--a must for fans of the golden age of illustration. Dover, 2011...More.

PEN DRAWING AND PEN DRAUGHTSMEN A Classic Survey of the Medium and Its Masters
Closeout Price! Highly Recommended. By Joseph Pennell. One of the must-have early reference books by a renowned artist himself, first published in 1920, the heyday of fine pen & ink illustration. Joseph Pennell highlights his opinionated "technical suggestions" with more than 400 illustrations by 250 famous artists, including Dürer, Manet, Renoir, Beardsley, Pyle, Hiroshige, Rackham, Clement Coll, Franklin Booth, Edwin Abbey, Schwabe, Kley--all the name artists from 1880-1920. Each of the high-quality reproductions is accompanied by a critique of its style and execution and comparisons to the artist's other works and those of contemporaries. Dover, 2013...More.

The Art of Magic!

Highly Recommended. By Mike Caveney and Jim Steinmeyer. Edited by Noel Daniel. An amazing 850 rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings as well as paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Caravaggio among others, The Big Book of Magic traces the history of magic as a performing art. Combining sensational images with incisive text, the book explores the evolution of the magician's craft, from medieval street performers to the brilliant stage magicians who gave rise to cinematic special effects; from the 19th century's Golden Age of Magic to groundbreaking daredevils like Houdini and the early 20th century's vaudevillians. Giant edition, in a slipcase. Taschen, 2018...More.

Item Code: MAGIH
Hard Cover, 7x10, 544pg, Full Color

This began as a deluxe $200 collection, then was done in a smaller format for $70, and now its available once again at a new even-lower price. All previous editions are sold out. It's a great book, it's so popular Taschen also did a calendar and a postcard set of the images.

1935-1937. The Hidden Kingdom of Murderers. Highly Recommended. By Lee Falk and Phil Davis. This unusual strip was the first to feature a magician. Unlike other adventurers, Mandrake used his illusionist skills and his head, rather than his fists. Artist Phil Davis's work is as good as Alex Raymond's from the same period, exhibiting a fine-line brush and beautiful girls as good as the master. I'm very excited to finally have this long-overdue collection of a superior, oft-neglected classic. Titan, 2016...More.

Lone Sloane by Druillet

Recommended. By Gustave Flaubert and Philippe Druillet. In the third century BC, mercenaries of Carthage rose against their rulers. And two barbarian clan chiefs, Matho and Narr'Havas, fell in love with the beautiful and ethereal Salammbo, daughter of Hamilcar of Carthage. Based on the 19th century novel by Flaubert, Salammbo is appropriated and recontextualised by Druillet in this masterwork of psychedelic metaphysical panorama. Mad battles and demonic warriors transpose the Punic Wars into Druillet's space fantasy universe. Oversized and lengthy. Titan Comics, 2018...More.

LONE SLOANE Le Mystere Des Abimes
Recommended. This is both Philippe Druillet's first appearance in print, and the first of Lone Sloane--it is in French and printed in two colors, much like Barbarella. This scarce hardcover was published in 1966. Lone Sloane was then serialized in the French/Belgian magazine Pilot from February 1970 to April 1971, collected in further French editions, then revamped by the author for Metal Hurlant magazine and ultimately done in English years later. Soon Tracy learns that an international crime syndicate, the Apparatus, has infiltrated Smith's organization on the lunar surface. Determined to expand its nefarious empire, the Apparatus snares Dick and Tess Tracy, leaving them caught in one of the most frightening death traps in the history of the series--leaving  Tracy blind, with the killers still after him! In these stories from 1963-64, the globetrotting Steve Canyon foils diabolical enemy plots in half a dozen countries. Steve goes undercover in Turkey, tries not to get clawed by his old "friend" Cheetah during an encounter in western Mexico, and tackles a communist plot in Africa. And after being embroiled in a royal family feud in the fictional kingdom of Mahnay, Canyon has his first brush with military action in Vietnam! IDW, 2018...More.

Paintings, watercolors, and drawings never before seen. Drawing inspiration from the gnarled shrubbery of England's windswept moorlands, Brian is the mad genius behind Jim Henson's film The Dark Crystal and Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book. Enhanced by Froud's own words about his experiences and insights, nudes of lovely faerie women. Oversized 9x13, very impressive with a handsome new cover. Insight Editions, 2018...More.

COLLECTED TOPPI Volume 1 Enchanted World
Highly Recommended. By Sergio Toppi. Introduction by Bill Sienkiewicz. Eleven amazing stories of fantasy, myth and legend, newly translated. This is the first of a seven-volume library of works by master illustrator Sergio Toppi. Consider this from Bill Sienkiewicz: "...his name comes up constantly in headshaking, hushed tones. His talent and oeuvre cast a long shadow, eliciting equal parts awe, reverence, and intimidation...Other artists were amazing, but to me this man's work was on an entirely different level...powerful, elegant, musical, and as realistic..." Lioin Forge, 2019...More.

It is the first comprehensive study of the seminal gathering of photographs and photographic equipment that marked the global launch of the form. Oak Knoll Press, 2018...More.

All from Weird Science and Weird Fantasy #1-10 Highly Recommended. By Al Feldstein. Art by Jack Kamen.Jack Kamen's first 22 complete stories for Weird Science and Weird Fantasy. He and writer Al Feldstein explore the unexpected twists and turns that arise from the unintended consequences of new inventions such as matter transmitters, molecular duplicators, shrinking rays, time machines, and too-perfect robots. Usually with a pretty girl involved, whether being duplicated, shrunk or zapped through time! Jonah Jameson, while discovering her identity and origins as a super hero. CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #31 Around the World in 80 Days
Published as CI #69, 1950. Cover from the 1957 edition. By Jules Verne. Art by Henry C. Kiefer.Jules Verne's tale of Phileas Fogg and his bet to travel around the world in 80 days. It's always been a favorite story of mine, one of Jules Verne's pure adventure stories rather than science fiction. Kiefer was a stalwart of the Golden Age, although his work here is adequate at best. But he worked for nearly every comics company in his day. Born in 1890, he had already had a long illustration career before comics came along. Includes details about Verne's story and the very popular 1956 film. Classic Comic Store, 2011...More.

This edition incorporates a fine new painted cover done in 1957, and an all-new rendering of the story. EC veteran artist John Severin collaborates with (unknown to us) artist Stephen Addeo. Here is Cooper's very famous tale of Hawkeye and Chingachgook, which has interesting parallels and departures from the wonderful 1992 film with Daniel Day Lewis--one of my all-time favorite films. This was part of Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" of the great American frontier. Classic Comic Store, 2011...More.

Next up, in March we will exhibit at both the Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair and Sac-Con, the comics show, in Sacramento.
