ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #79
Highly Recommended. This issue features the incredible fantasy/science fiction artist Clyde Caldwell, known for his many book covers, illustrations for TSR (Dungeons & Dragons), Wizards of the Coast, Heavy Metal and Dragon magazines, and so much more. An extensive feature includes several nudes and private commissions. We've always liked Caldwell's work. Author David Saunders returns with a feature on Nick Eggenhofer, best known for his Western pulp covers, and work for Argosy and True magazines in the 1950s. Illustration Magazine, 2023....More.

EVITA The Life and Work of Eva Peron
The Alberto Brecchia Library Vol 6. Originally published in 1970, writer Hector Germán Oesterheld and the father and son illustration team of Alberto and Enrique Breccia intended Evita to be the follow-up to the successful and controversial 1969 graphic biography Life of Che. But the script was taken away from him and depoliticized by another writer and the book sank like a stone. In 2002, a restored, revised, and updated version of Evita, featuring Oesterheld's original script, which takes a uniquely symbolic approach to her life and career, was finally published in Argentina. Here it is in English for the first time. Fantagraphics, 2023....More.

NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER Epic Collection Volume 3 Who Strikes for Atlantis?
Collects Sub-Mariner #4-27, 1968-70. Highly Recommended. By Roy Thomas. Art by John Buscema, Marie Severin, Gene Colan et al. In 1968 Namor finally gained his own title after sharing stories in Tales to Astonish. Stan put one of his finest artists on this new Silver Age version of the Golden Age stalwart: John Buscema. And boy, are these beautifully drawn. Our hero confronts the bloodthirsty Tiger Shark for the first time, and Destiny returns. The Helmet of the Ancients is revealed. The alien Stalker robs Namor of his ability to fly and to breathe underwater. Stranded on land, Namor is public enemy #1 and even Doctor Doom aims for the target on his back. Also a fight with the Thing, a meeting with the 1940s Human Torch and the death of Toro, and the touching return of a love from Namor’s past. Marvel, 2022. ...More.

J.C. LEYENDECKER
Warehouse find, 1974. Highly Recommended. By Michael Schau. J. C. Leyendecker (1874-1951) was one of the preeminent American illustrators of the early twentieth century. His Arrow Collar ads epitomized the Great Gatsby look, while his 322 Saturday Evening Post covers, painted between 1899 and 1943, set the style for the magazine and for the era. Here, for the first time, the art of J. C. Leyendecker is fully explored in a well-researched and well-documented study. Over 200 black and white illustrations include reproductions of all facets of his art, and 64 pages in full color offer a comprehensive gallery of Leyendecker at his most memorable. News & Notes

Taschen News

Masterpieces of Fantasy Art has just gone out of print. This was the XXL $200 edition with Boris and many others. This caught us unawares and we have no copies left. Tashen plans to reprint it in a smaller and less expensive format, probably for $70 or $80.

I expect exactly the same thing will happen on The History of EC Comics/signed [HISECH. $200]. That is one that you really should not miss in the large XXL size, it has Our Highest Recommendation. The bookplate features a color drawing by Angelo Torres. We brought in extra copies of this; it’s not out of print as yet, it could sell out any time. This was our #2 Bestselling book in 2020. It also qualifies for free shipping, this week only.

Vivid images of swamp creatures, vampires, werewolves, and beasties — Bernie's favorite monsters! It’s a spellbinding collection of all the things for which Bernie is best known, never before in book form and nearly actual size of each painting. JOHN SINGER SARGENT Masterpiece Edition
Recommended. By Carter Ratcliff. An enormous new collection, 12 x 15 inches. In the early work of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), Henry James saw "the slightly 'uncanny' spectacle of a talent which on the threshold of its career has nothing more to learn." Sargent’s genius was sustained with equal intensity through his famed society portraits, like the scandalous Madame X; his full-size showpieces, like The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit; his thousands of watercolors executed en plein air from Venice to Corfu to Maine to Montana; and his ambitious mural decorations for the public monuments of Boston. CARMEN
Recommended. Perhaps the most famous opera in history, Georges Bizet's Carmen premiered in 1875 in Paris. The four-act opera, adapted from the novella by Prosper Mérimée, remains "one of the most exciting and popular works in the repertoire." Arizona Opera Company presents Carmen, a tragic tale of a beautiful dancer and her soldier-suitors (and revolutionaries), adapted as a graphic novel by tenor, director, and writer Alek Shrader and illustrated by legendary artist P. Craig Russell and the acclaimed artist Aneke (Bylines in Blood). Powerfully drawn in an oversized format, with excellent artwork. Clover Press, 2023....More.

Through a combination of powerful illustrations and striking verse, Last on His Feet honors a contentious man who has for more than a century been denied his proper due. Liveright, 2023....More.

Bud Plant and Hutchison Books Show Report

We just had our most successful Antiquarian Book show ever in Pasadena, selling books by Howard Pyle, Norman Lindsay, Arthur Rackham, an Art of Jack Kirby Signed, two signed Carl Barks editions, vintage Walt Disney editions and much more.

Anne is working now on her February email list which only goes out to a tiny number of people…you can be one of them. This will be the first time many of our new books are available, except at the show. Call 530-273-9762 or email bpandhbooks@mac.com. Visit our website at budplantandhutchisonbooks.com. Anne is constantly adding new books and scans, available on the site, always several weeks before they appear on ABE and Biblio online.

Celebrity sightings at the show: Bill Stout came by and we caught up—pictured below—and I got to share two of my show acquisitions with him, French Art Nouveau Design portfolios from the 1880s. Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon came by and said hello—it’s been years since we’ve run into one another. And Guillermo del Toro didn’t make it into our booth, but he hit it off with Ken Sanders one aisle over, bought several things, and even invited Ken to dinner Sunday night!

During the show we stayed with Susan and Eric Goldberg nearby—and Eric made it into the 90 second Disney 100th Anniversary commercial some three hours into the Superbowl; he and Walt were the only ones shown drawing animation work!!
