The Art of Tran Nguyen, The Mark of Zorro, new Prince Valiant, Marvel Heroes, Stan Lee and Little Lulu!

It's a fun week when I don't quite know WHAT new title to lead off with. The Art of Tran Nguyen is a beauty from Flesk. The Mark of Zorro is a massive look at the enduring hero. A new Prince Valiant continues the Foster-written Sundays after he stopped drawing it. And the new Best of Little Lulu series kicks off with early stories in full color. And there's a whole lot more here.

The first artist to bring Spider-Man to life, Ditko illustrated him for four years -- helping create characters such as Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, the Vulture, and dozens more of Spider-Man's classic villains. In contrast to the grounded realism of Spider-Man, Ditko also drew the adventures of Doctor Strange and his bizarre otherworldly threats. He also drew The Hulk, Iron Man, Daredevil, Speedball, who all are featured in stories here from the early days of Marvel. Plus several pre-hero mini-masterpieces of fantasy. Marvel, 2019...More.

39 complete stories from 1952-65. Our Highest Recommendation. By Harvey Kurtzman, Jerry De Fuccio et al. Art by Wallace Wood. When artist Wallace Wood teamed up with writer/editor Harvey Kurtzman to create stories, the result was some of the best war stories ever put to paper. Together, they delivered outstanding, deeply human battle tales from the Roman Legions, Napoleon, the Civil War, World War I and II, on up to Korea. This volume collects all their combat tales for EC's Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Wood and Kurtzman pulled no punches in depicting the utter folly, madness, and horror of war, especially in the title story, which depicts the bombing of Nagasaki from the viewpoint of the victims! Recommended. Adapted by Nathan Carson. Art by Sam Ford. H.P. Lovecraft wrote, “Aside from Poe, I think Algernon Blackwood touches me most closely...I [consider] The Willows the finest weird story I have ever read." This immortal novella of extra-dimensional weirdness on the Danube comes to vivid life in graphic comic form thanks to the incredibly detailed black-and-white linework of talented newcomer, Sam Ford. Oversized limited edition in deluxe slipcase. Highly Recommended. By Algernon Blackwood. Art by Paul Pope. Introduction by Ramsey Campbell, Afterword by Pope. Paul Pope (Battling Boy, Batman: Year 100) provides stunning full color plates for short stories and novellas by Algernon Blackwood, one of the original masters of horror and weird fiction. Blackwood's work predicts and predates the work of H.P. Lovecraft, who called The Willows "the greatest horror tale ever written in the English language." Pope brings five Blackwood stories to unsettling visual life, tackling the challenge of how to illustrate an author who had his gaze firmly fixed on the inexpressible, unknowable and uncanny. This is it—the end of one of our most popular books. The publisher, who lives in Spain, says this will never be reprinted—it sold out nearly overnight when it first came out. He's shipped us two previous cases, all of which we sold at the same $125 price. He is sending us his last case of 12, and one more case of slightly damaged copies. Then it will be officially out of print. Act now if you want an as-new copy, or inquire if you prefer a slightly damaged copy at a small discount—probably $100 or so. I need to see these first to price them fairly.

News and Notes

PG&E Power Outages

They did it to us again this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Fortunately we got all the Monday orders out before we lost our electricity, and it's back on Wednesday afternoon, as I write this. So far, we know of no more outages planned, so we should be back to normal as you read this. When the power was off, we could not take orders by phone or ship, but our website remained working as usual, as it is maintained off-site. Thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding.

Christmas and the Holidays

We're putting the finishing touches on our last catalog of the year, which will be in your hands in early December. That leaves very little time to get gifts to you.

So we consider our present Holiday catalog to be the one you should use for ordering before the big day; if you don't have a copy, you can download it right below. Or call for a copy, or add one on the website to your order. It's the one with the Mac Raboy cover. Speaking of which, this book was slightly delayed, but it has now shipped to us, so it should be in our hands the first week in November. I ordered plenty of extras, after the last Twomorrow's art book, The Art of Reed Crandall, caught us unawares and sold out within weeks. Act now.

Spectrum 26

We'll be featuring a fine work by Scott Gustafson on the cover of our next catalog, and I have an advance sample of Spectrum 26 in my hands. We expect our shipment any day now, both hardcover and softcover. Also see our site for back volumes. Thanks to our Underwood Publisher File Copies purchase, several are on sale while supply lasts.

Limited, 900! Our Highest Recommendation. This is the ultimate and only book ever on the preemient but barely remembered pulp cover artist best known for his sexy women. His work is instantly recognizable, in covers for Planet Stories, Spicy Detective, Spicy Mystery, other Fiction House pulps like Action, Northwest, Lariat, and especially Jungle and the rare Sheena. He also did painted covers for Ziff-Davis comics: Eerie Adventures, G.I. Joe, Space Busters, Lars of Mars...he worked (and lived sometimes) with Norman Saunders, they were lifelong friends. Allen's work can easily be mistaken for Saunders'. Illustrated Press, 2019...More.

Recommended. By Basil Gogos. The Monster Art of Basil Gogos was produced under a partnership between FantaCo and Basil Gogos' wife, Linda. They had access to ALL of Basil's private sketches and illustrations for some of his most famous paintings, as well as many hundreds of preliminary sketches for never published projects. This shows you how Basil used his sketches to create his wonderful paintings--arranged by monster (Wolfman, The Creature, Dracula, Frankenstein, etc). His wife has written the introduction and has added commentary explaining many of the images. Illustrated Press, 2019...More.

It's the Wild West, including two major features on the father of Western Art, Frederic Remington, and his great rival Charles Schreyvogel. Plus a handsome 23-page feature on The Lone Ranger, from pulps, radio and tv to comic book and comic strips--original art by Tom Gil and more special features. Remington and Schreyvogel actually traveled the old west in order to paint authentic works of Indians, action scenes with cavalry, buffalo, and more. Book Palace, 2019...More.

"The Piebald Men," "Evil in Orbit," "Times 5," and "Power from Beyond." From the pages of Thriller Picture Library. This digest format was perfect, with just two large panels on each page, allowing for detail and panoramas rare in comics. Ron Turner has long been regarded as one of the most innovative and stylish sci-fi illustrators the UK has ever produced. Highly Recommended. Art by Arturo Del Castillo. Arturo Del Castillo was able to craft images of enormous depth and beauty through cross-hatched pen lines, creating subtle patterns and textures, juxtaposed with bold chiaroscuro lighting, which was utterly unique in comics. Widely regarded as one of the greatest artists to have worked in the comic medium, we are privileged to see him at his very best on this gritty, realistic western in the class of Clint Eastwood and The Man With No Name. Great gunfights starring our lightening-draw vigilante. Book Palace, 2019...More.

X-MEN By Roy Thomas and Neal Adams
Collects #56-63 and #65, 1963. Deluxe oversize hardcover, 23 pages of bonus features. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roy Thomas. Art by Neal Adams and Tom Palmer. In 1969, with X-MEN on the verge of cancellation, the creative team of Roy Thomas and Neal Adams charted a bold new direction for Marvel's mutants...and the rest is history! Their epic evolution of the X-Men defines the team to this day. Adams' lavish and dynamic visuals and Thomas' challenging and contemporary stories combined to create a book that throbbed with the pulse of the times. Their iconic run introduced the cosmic-powered Havok, the vampiric villain Sauron and the bizarre Mutates, while pairing the X-Men and Ka-Zar in a classic Savage Land battle against the X-Men's greatest foe -Magneto! Highly Recommended. By Dennis O'Neil, Gerry Conway et al. Art by Michael Golden. The 1970s stories starring Batman featuring the slick artwork of Michael Golden are collected for the first time, including appearances by the Demon and Man-Bat and stories never before collected. Golden is renowned for his design skills and unique interpretation of Batman and other heroes, as seen in these early stories, written by well-known comics writers including Dennis O'Neil, Gerry Conway and Mike W. Barr. I would compare his work to that of Michael Kaluta and Berni Wrightson. It's excellent, and the stories are also very good. DC Comics, 2019...More.

Power Outage

We're being told we may be without electricity again this week, so we are getting this done early and expecting the worst. As before, our website will be up and you can order online; the only problem is that our phones go out of operation, and we can't ship orders until the juice is back on. We are hoping this will be over by the time you read this, on Thursday night or Friday, and we will be shipping as usual on Friday. Thanks for your patience.

For you early birds, our new catalog has a special section devoted to my personal gift recommendations. Foreign customers know they need to order early to get packages in time for Christmas. But I always suggest early is best domestically too, in case we run out of a title as the holiday approaches. I do my best not to have this happen, but it's not a perfect world and neither are my predictions of sales perfect. When we get a little closer to the holidays I'll do a special section here in the email. For now, you can see some of our Christmas books on the website here.

Our Catalog and Contact Info

We publish a color catalog every two months—if you’ve placed an order in the last 12 months, you will receive it hot off the press. Place your order before noon PST, Monday through Friday for SAME DAY shipping (for in-stock items).
