Standard Edition. Our Highest Recommendation. Four volumes present an illustrative history of all Burroughs' publications in the United States (and some from the U.K.). Written and compiled by Michael Tierney, the narrative gives the history of Burroughs' work and the often legendary artists who visualized it, featuring untold stories, art that hasn't been seen since its release, and pieces that were buried in the vaults from the beginning of his publishing history to the present day. Pulps, books, paintings, prints,'s all here. Chenault & Gray, 2018...More.

Not yet in but expected very shortly is the leather edition of this set. As mentioned in detail last week, the publisher has raised the price on the leather edition to $400 and says he is probably sold out. However, we still have copies, and will honor the pre-pub $299 price while supply lasts, or until July 1, when the price will become $400 on any remaining copies. The regular edition should remain available for a little while; he has 300+ left at last estimate.

Lowbrow Art

Recommended. By Jamie Kendall. A visual road trip from Route 66 to Route 666, this rockin' collection of more than 600 artworks presents the unapologetically fun and undeniably cool spirit of rockabilly and psychobilly. The 55 artists featured here represent a global subculture and are some of today's best lowbrow and cartoon artists, the de facto styles of the genre. Whether you're burning for nostalgia or learning more about the phenomenon, this massive collection covers the twisted art of modern rockabilly culture. Schiffer, 2018...More.

Recommended. This new monograph traces the development of the artist, from a kid playing with crayons to the present day. From his early addiction to comic books and cartoons, to his obsession with animals and discovery of fine art through the works of Dali, John James Audubon, Caravaggio and more. In some cases, preliminary sketches can be found alongside finished works providing a glimpse into the artistic process and evolution of a piece. Other creations stand alone, masterpieces of artwork as narrative. Zero, 2017...More.

POSTERSPY Alternative Movie Poster Collection
Highly Recommended. By Frédéric Claquin and Jack Woodhams. Long before the advent of social networks, the first, and sometimes only, visual contact you may have had with a movie was its poster. Contemporary work of 58 different artists from the PosterSpy art community, one of the most influential groups devoted to alternative posters. They are actively collected today. During his peak period in the 1940s, he produced half of all Coke's advertising art. Sundblom is recognized as a major influence on many well known pin-up artists, such as Gil Elvgren, Edward Runci, Joyce Ballantyne, Art Frahm, and Harry Ekman. In the mid-1930s, he began to paint pin-ups and glamour pieces for calendars. Sundblom's last assignment, in 1972, was a cover painting for Playboy's Christmas issue. Illustrated Press, 2018. News and Notes

The Art of Haddon Sundblom

Here’s some more about this important book, which is noted above in the coming section. We encourage advance orders on these, because Illustrated Press does sell out their books, sometimes unexpectedly. I just learned that Jon Whitcomb is gone, and we went through our last copies just last week.

Here’s a link to their other books that are still available: Coby Whitmore (just published), Harry Anderson, Edwin Giorgy, Bernie Fuchs, Dean Cornwell (2nd printing), Reynold Brown (2nd printing, greatly revised and expanded), Shannon Stirnweis, and Masters of American Illustration. Masterworks from the Golden Age of Illustration 3 is on sale, $44.95, your price $29.95. We have 14 left at this price. Volumes 1 and 2 are out of print.
The Illustrated Press just shipped us their newest release on Coby Whitmore, on top of the Art of Harry Anderson—the cover feature on our latest catalog. Now they have announced their next title covering Haddon Sundblom. He’s best known as THE Coca-Cola illustrator of the 1940s and 50s—his pretty sun-bathing girls and his classic Santa were indelible images in their day and beyond. He also established the Sundblom Studio, where many fine artists worked and prospered. He had a 35-year relationship with Coke, at one time producing virtually half of all of their widespread advertising.

According to Roger T. Reed, president of the New York gallery Illustration House, “Sundblom gets pigeonholed as the painter of Coca-Cola Santa Clauses, but this trivializes his central place in twentieth century advertising art. More than any artist including Norman Rockwell, Sundblom defined the American Dream in pictures, proved by his work for virtually the entire Fortune 500.”

Just as Sundblom had benefited from his early studio apprenticeship, he is credited with developing the next generation of commercial artists. His various studios were a training ground for up-and-coming illustrators who wanted to learn at the foot of a true master.

Always generous with his staff and modest about his impact on the industry, Sundblom’s circle of influence extended to hundreds of artists. Creating famous advertising campaigns, glamorous pin-up girls and noted brand characters, his apprentices went on to join agencies or start studios of their own throughout the country.
Sorolla and Fashion

This arrived the day after I left town for the Portland Rose City Book Fair this week, June 16-17. So rather than list it as a new item this week, I’m just mentioning it here. We already listed it as a coming item just recently. I want to see it first so I can edit and write a new description—it’s not often we get a new book on an important artist like Sorolla. So I’ll do that when I’m back.
