News and Notes

We are just coming home from the Portland Rose City Book Fair as I write, so I have not edited the descriptions for this week yet. Even the WECA priceguide I had to wing it on, but I did have a lot of information to work from. So next week I will add Recommendations and more details where I can, after I see all the books above.

The Rose City show was very good; I wish we had a little more sales but we reached our reasonable expectations. Over 1000 attendees and 64 dealers, which is pretty amazing for a regional book fair. Our own twice-annual book fair in Sacramento runs about 600 attendees but close to the same number of exhibitors. But the quality of the books in Portland is higher, in general, than in Sac.

There were lots of cool items to find, for myself I bought four Weird Tales issues, and high grade vintage paperbacks, two nice Hugh Thompson illustrated books c.1931, and eleven issues of this German fantasy magazine that appeared from 1919 to 1921. It is the acknowledged forerunner of Weird Tales, the first magazine devoted to fantasy and horror stories. Publisher Century Guild is planning a book collecting the cover art, which we will be handling.

A long-time collector--and good friend--was selling part of his collection of art books and other things. I bought four boxes of great material. It will all go into our Rare & Out of Print section in the next few weeks. I got two Satan's Tears by Alex Niño, one regular edition with a dirty jacket that will be inexpensive, and one of the limited-to-60 copies with an entire full page original painting. Plus The Art of Richard Powers, several signed David Delamare picture books, Wallace Smith's wonderful Fantasius Mallare, some signed Scott Gustafson picture books, a signed Art of David Merriam, and much more.
