Independence Day Sale!

Independence Day Sale!

We lead off with several items discounted here for the very first time. I'm especially enthusiastic about the big Nemo book—this is a wonderful book, but obviously $125 was a stiff price. It was subsequently collected in an abridged, smaller-sized edition with just 30 pieces, as Little Nemo's Big New Dreams, now sold out. The publisher decided to reduce their inventory on this original edition, so you are the winner here. $45 is still a bit, but that's nearly 2/3 off a really, really GREAT book.

Also here we have a mix of slightly hurt items at half price or less, and vintage Warehouse Finds. Most of these have been listed just once before, in one of the weekly emails. Virtually none of these ever appeared in a catalog, since we rarely have enough copies for that. Quantities are VERY limited, so order soon to avoid disappointment.

FORD MADOX BROWN Pre-Raphaelite Pioneer
A massive volume. Recommended. By Julian Treuherz. Ford Madox Brownhad already pioneered a style of painting which came to be known as Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848. His beautifully observed landscapes anticipated the open-air effects of the Impressionists. His art was anti-academic, rejecting easy solutions, prettiness, and conventional Victorian formulae. He depicted children without sentimentality and poor people without condescension. This major monograph provides a general introduction to Brown’s art based on new research; all of his important paintings are included, and each one is illustrated and described. BEFORE THE ANIMATION BEGINS
Warehouse find, 1996. Highly Recommended. By John Canemaker. This is the absolute best collection of rare, never-before-seen art by all of the masters of the early Disney cartoon. Disney's pioneering animated films began in the imaginations of the "inspirational sketch artists." Allowed to work with an unprecedented degree of creative freedom, these talented artists attempted to conjure the "look" of a film: appearance of characters, the action's locale, mood and use of color. REVOLUTION The Art of Jon Foster Deluxe Signed
Signed & limited, 300! In slipcase. Highly Recommended. Art by Jon Foster. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, and Irene Gallo. Jon Foster creates irresistibly dark demimondes populated by retro robots, Star Wars villains, and creepy goth-inspired creatures that recall the work of James Gurney (Dinotopia), Rick Berry, H. R. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. ARTHUR RACKHAM Masterpieces of Art
Highly Recommended. By Joseph Simas. Art by Arthur Rackham. Arthur Rackham was the most famous book illustrator of his time, and influenced much of the book illustration of the first half of the 20th century. The impishness of his drawings brought humor and detail to the fairy stories and classic tales which were popular at the time, from the Brothers Grimm and Peter Pan to his exquisite work on Alice in Wonderland. THE POST-PRE-RAPHAELITE PRINT
Warehouse find, 1995. Limited, 1500. Etching, Illustration, Reproductive Engraving, & Photography in England In And Around The 1860s. Recommended. The first purpose of the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue were to demonstrate to an American audience the beauty and interest of British prints from the decade of the 1860s and the PRB Brotherhood who took art and design in new directions. Engraving, illustration, etching, and photography each flourished in the period, and each has been studied, collected, and exhibited in strict isolation from the other three, as if the others, for all intents and purposes, did not exist. This catalogue features and discusses instead, where they are related and what distinguishes them: their technical possibilities, economic underpinnings, traditions, and audiences. Some of the many artists in this collection include Dante Gabriel  Rossetti, John Everett Millais, Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Walter Crane, Paul Tabor, John Tenniel and James McNeill Whistler.
