FRACTAL COSMOS The Mathematical Art of Alice Kelley 2019 Calendar
Highly Recommended. By Alice Kelley. Fractals, visual depictions of mathematical equations — the ones behind natural phenomena such as crystal growth, galaxy formation, plant shapes, and weather patterns — prove that math is indeed beautiful, especially when you use it to create art. More than one Fractals calendar has been done, but this one by Alice Kelley remains the first and the best, each year featuring innovative, sometimes psychedelic computer-generated abstract designs, paired with quotes from luminaries in the fields of mathematics and science. NUKE 'EM! Classic Cold War Comics Celebrating The End of The World
Collects Atomic War! #1-4,1952-53 and World War III #1-2,1952-53. Recommended. Art by Ken Rice, Lou Cameron et al. Back in the 1950s during the “Cold War” every new day hinted at the possibility of the end of the world. Kids grew up in the shadow of bomb shelters and were treated to daily lessons at school on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.  Americans were besieged by constant reminders to police our borders, to carefully watch out for “foreigners” who might be spies, and to be ever vigilant in preparing to combat the “red” menace of communism. Lou Cameron's fine artwork is featured in almost every issue. The Major’s granddaughter and noted comics historian contributes a historical essay that provides an in depth look at the formation of National Allied Publications, which would become DC Comics...and the man behind New Fun, New Comics, and more. J.W. GODWARD 1861-1922 The Eclipse of Classicism
New Revised Edition. Highly Recommended. By Vern G. Swanson. Art by J.W. Godward. John William Godward (1861-1922) was among the brightest stars of the late Graeco-Roman painters during classicism's twilight years. Some believe he equalled Alma-Tadema in his depiction of marble and flowers and Frederic Leighton in his depiction of drapery. I like to compare him to Maxfield Parrish, since he also discovered the appeal of nude or appealing young women, and that became a favorite subject, just as Parrish did the same a generation later. Acc Art Books, 2018. Due Oct. ...More.

VICTORIAN GIANTS The Birth of Art Photography

The work of Oscar Rejlander(1813-75), Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-79), Lewis Carroll(1832-98) and Lady Clementina Hawarden (1822-65) embodies the very best of photography from the Victorian era. These giants of 19th-century photography experimented with new approaches to picture-making and shaped attitudes toward photography that have informed artistic practice ever since. Discover the images that made the case for the photograph as a work of art in this beautiful book. National Portrait Gallery, 2018...More.

Edgar Rice Burroughs 100-Year Chronology

The good news is our reorder came in for the trade edition, so we have these in stock now —we’d run through all of our initial copies. On the other hand, we are still waiting for the leatherbound edition to get here. And we don’t know how many we will be getting quite yet, so don’t know if we’ll have extras to sell. We honored the pre-pub price until July 1, but now, if we end up with any beyond copies already reserved, they will be $400. The publisher says he’s out of copies.

Independence Day Sale

In case you missed it, we sent out a special email on Tuesday with new sale items, hurt copies, and warehouse finds. See it on our blog, or shop the items here. Also, too late to add to it, we have just one copy each of three Artist’s Editions and a Chris Ware Monograph, all hurts that we just put online.

We publish a color catalog every two months—if you’ve placed an order in the last 12 months, you will receive it hot off the press. Independence Day Sale!

Independence Day Sale!

We lead off with several items discounted here for the very first time. I'm especially enthusiastic about the big Nemo book—this is a wonderful book, but obviously $125 was a stiff price. It was subsequently collected in an abridged, smaller-sized edition with just 30 pieces, as Little Nemo's Big New Dreams, now sold out. The publisher decided to reduce their inventory on this original edition, so you are the winner here. $45 is still a bit, but that's nearly 2/3 off a really, really GREAT book.

Also here we have a mix of slightly hurt items at half price or less, and vintage Warehouse Finds. Most of these have been listed just once before, in one of the weekly emails. Virtually none of these ever appeared in a catalog, since we rarely have enough copies for that. Quantities are VERY limited, so order soon to avoid disappointment.

FORD MADOX BROWN Pre-Raphaelite Pioneer
A massive volume. Recommended. By Julian Treuherz. Ford Madox Brownhad already pioneered a style of painting which came to be known as Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848. His beautifully observed landscapes anticipated the open-air effects of the Impressionists. His art was anti-academic, rejecting easy solutions, prettiness, and conventional Victorian formulae. He depicted children without sentimentality and poor people without condescension. This major monograph provides a general introduction to Brown’s art based on new research; all of his important paintings are included, and each one is illustrated and described. Warehouse find, 1996. Highly Recommended. By John Canemaker. This is the absolute best collection of rare, never-before-seen art by all of the masters of the early Disney cartoon. Disney's pioneering animated films began in the imaginations of the "inspirational sketch artists." Allowed to work with an unprecedented degree of creative freedom, these talented artists attempted to conjure the "look" of a film: appearance of characters, the action's locale, mood and use of color. REVOLUTION The Art of Jon Foster Deluxe Signed
Signed & limited, 300! In slipcase. Highly Recommended. Art by Jon Foster. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, and Irene Gallo. Jon Foster creates irresistibly dark demimondes populated by retro robots, Star Wars villains, and creepy goth-inspired creatures that recall the work of James Gurney (Dinotopia), Rick Berry, H. R. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. Warehouse find, 1995. Limited, 1500. Etching, Illustration, Reproductive Engraving, & Photography in England In And Around The 1860s. Recommended. The first purpose of the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue were to demonstrate to an American audience the beauty and interest of British prints from the decade of the 1860s and the PRB Brotherhood who took art and design in new directions. Engraving, illustration, etching, and photography each flourished in the period, and each has been studied, collected, and exhibited in strict isolation from the other three, as if the others, for all intents and purposes, did not exist. This catalogue features and discusses instead, where they are related and what distinguishes them: their technical possibilities, economic underpinnings, traditions, and audiences. Some of the many artists in this collection include Dante Gabriel  Rossetti, John Everett Millais, Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Walter Crane, Paul Tabor, John Tenniel and James McNeill Whistler. PENTHOUSE COMIX Volume 2 Number 26 October 1997
Penthouse Magazine is both famous and infamous as one of the leading adult magazines published throughout the world. Each issue contains six to seven stories that have been written and/or drawn by many different creators. Art is uniformly excellent, but the stories can sometimes suffer from an emphasis more on prurience than on plot. Artists include Earl Miller, Luis Royo, Tony Salmons, Paolo Parente, Michael Lopez, Merv, Dave Johnson, Adam Hughes, John Burns, Ron Embleton. Penthouse International, 1997. Out of Print.
