The Art of Raphael DeSoto, H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, Archie 1941, a new Weird Fantasy Archives and several new Marvel collections.

David Saunders presents The Art of Raphael DeSoto and it's a fine new book. I also really like the new adaptation of Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. Archie 1941 is really a change of pace and an interesting, more serious take on the Riverdale kids.

We also have a second Berserk, Weird Fantasy Archives 4, three fine new 2020 calendars, several new Marvel collections, a new Bettie set, and a new magazine of veterans' stories in graphic novel form, Full Mag. The first Collected Toppi is back in print, and finally, Cons de Fee: The Erotic Art of Wally Wood is already flying out of here. Don't miss it.

THE ART OF RAFAEL DESOTO
Limited, 900! Highly Recommended. By David Saunders. This is the consummate art book on the life of pulp, paperback, and men's adventure magazine artist Rafael DeSoto, with reproductions taken directly from DeSoto's original paintings, as well as working drawings, reference photos, rare proof sheets of pulp and paperback covers, as well as historic family photos. He began drawing pulp covers in 1932 and because he was 4F, was one of very few pulp artists to work through the war years. He worked in pulps until the very end in the early 1950s, while expanding into doing paperback covers for Ace, Bantam, Dell, Lion, Signet, and Pocket Books, including the iconic "H Is For Heroin." He also worked for the slicks and for men's magazines. Illustrated Press, 2019...More.

H.P. LOVECRAFT'S AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS Volume 1
Highly Recommended. By Gou Tanabe. This manga adaptation of  Lovecraft's only complete novel is beautifully illustrated, with highly detailed and darkly moody artwork. I'm very impressed. This could be the best-ever adaptation, at least from the aspect of art, that I've seen of HPL's work yet. Journey into the core of Lovecraft's mythos--the deep caverns and even deeper time of the inhospitable continent (Antarctica) where the secret history of our planet is preserved--amidst the ruins of its first civilization, built by the alien Elder Things and bio-engineered monstrosities, the shoggoths. Dark Horse, 2019...More.

H.P. LOVECRAFT He Who Wrote in the Darkness
Highly Recommended. By Alex Nikolavitch. Art by Gervasio-Aon-Lee. Beginning with his move to Brooklyn in 1925, this factual graphic novel follows HPL on his many moves, his introverted lifestyle, his initial failed attempts to break into Weird Tales and their later attempt to hire him as editor! Interspersed through the bio are pieces of several of his most famous stories, as he daydreams or writes them up and we see related art with Cthulhu, mythical Arkham and The Necronomicon, his "alter ego," Randolph  Carter, Charles Dexter Ward, etc. HPL liked hanging out in graveyards at night, and always seemed to return to his beloved Providence. Pegasus Books, 2018....More.

ARCHIE 1941
Recommended. By Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn. Art by Peter Krause. Archie Andrews and the gang get serious in a tale set in Riverdale on the eve and during World War II. First it's everyone's high school graduation! Then that last summer, a moment of peace before the war in Europe bears down, and Pearl Harbor is bombed. For Archie, Reggie and Moose, it‘s enlistment and off to war in Europe! Spoiler alert--Veronica is the snooty rich girl, at least to start, and it's Betty that has won Archie's heart. How about that! Includes 22 pages of variant covers by a plethora of talent and a six-page interview with Waid and Augustyn. Very, very different but I liked it. Archie Comics, 2019...More.

COLLECTED TOPPI Volume 1 Enchanted World
Hurray! This great book is back in print. Highly Recommended. By Sergio Toppi. Introduction by Bill Sienkiewicz. Eleven amazing stories of fantasy, myth and legend, newly translated. This is the first of a seven-volume library of works by master illustrator Sergio Toppi. Consider this from Bill Sienkiewicz: "...his name comes up constantly in headshaking, hushed tones. His talent and oeuvre cast a long shadow, eliciting equal parts awe, reverence, and intimidation...Other artists were amazing, but to me this man's work was on an entirely different level...powerful, elegant, musical, and as abstract...as detailed...as exaggerated...as realistic..." Lion Forge, 2019...More.

2020 Calendars

THE ART OF DANIEL MERRIAM 2020 Calendar
Highly Recommended. In his artwork, contemporary surrealist Daniel Merriam presents an airy dreamworld of vaguely Victorian characters and architectural wonders. His paintings often seem lit from within but underlaid by an edgy darkness. Merriam (American, b. 1963) grew up in a small Maine village in a household filled with music and creativity. He taught himself to paint at a young age, and later studied mechanical and architectural design before becoming an architectural illustrator. By age twenty-three he had given up a successful commercial art career to pursue his fine art dreams. Pomegranate, 2019...More.

ANTON SEDER ART NOUVEAU 2020 Calendar
Highly Recommended. At the end of the nineteenth century, artist and professor Anton Seder was appointed founding director of Strasbourg's College of Decorative Arts. Seder (German, 1850-1916) developed the school as an influential artistic force, creating work that bridged French and German artistic styles and contributed to the development of Art Nouveau. He published Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe (The plant in art and trade), two volumes of  two hundred images, stunning in their artistry and graceful depiction of nature. Here are 12 of the finest plates from that rare folio edition. Pomegranate, 2019...More.

ALPHONSE MUCHA 2020 Calendar
Recommended. Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860-1939) believed that beautiful art improved the quality of life. While he created many advertising posters and calendars for champagne, chocolate, biscuits, and the like, he also pioneered a new genre of decorative panels (panneaux decoratifs), posters without words that were a precursor to today's art posters. He focused on nature—the seasons, flowers, gems, the arts—all with harmonious colors and decorative elements, starring beautiful women in diaphanous gowns. Pomegranate, 2019...More.

The big title this week is Cons de Fee: The Erotic Art of Wally Wood. This has already gone out of print from Fantagraphics and we have no reprint date. However, we moved quickly after filling our advance orders, and have been able to get a good batch of these. We initially ran out, so I delayed listing it until this week when we have enough to fill orders.

It could be months before we see a reprint, so we're not listing this in the next catalog until we see if we have any left. Needless to say, it's selling very well and Fantagraphics obviously didn't anticipate the demand for it.

Also here this week: Cavewoman: Rescue Party (cover E), nude cover by Budd Root. And finally, a new Voyeur DVD: Aurora & Meredith.

More Adult DVD's - I just went over some older titles from one of our suppliers, OCN. I am discontinuing some titles with just 1 or 2 in stock, so this is your last chance on these. And I have taken $10 off the price of the others, with just two, three, or at most, four in stock.

Going away are Matinee Idol [MATIN], Ms. Magnificent [MSMAG], A Place Beyond Shame [PLABE], Showdown: Back in the Saddle [SHOWDO] and Too Naughty to Say No [TNTS]. All of these are $24.98 each.

Now discounted, from $24.98 to $14.98 each, are Naughty Girls Need Love Too [NAUGG], Never Sleep Alone [NEVSA], That's Outrageous [THOUT], and these five Peekarama double features: Silk Satin Sex and Turn On [PAFT], Show My Master My Love and Teenage Masseuse [PMYM], Pleasure Maze and Lover's Lane [PPLE], Sinful Pleasures, Kinky Tricks and China Lust [PSIN], Velvet High and Summertime Blue [PVEL]. Click here to see them on our website.

Two weeks ago we sent out our Adult Email List #4. If you missed it, you can see the items listed in the email by clicking here. If you are not signed up for our Adults emails, you can do so here.
