Sunday Pages, 1973-74. Recommended. By Hal Foster. Art by John Cullen Murphy. Val is sent to defend the borders against invading barbarians, but it is young Arn who takes center stage as he travels to his homeland and loses his heart to Lydia, daughter of Haakon the Sea-Rover. Their romance is battered by battlefield conflicts, court conspiracies, assassination, and suicide. Escaping from a castle beset by siege and plague, Arn encounters Sir Gawain and joins him on the jousting circuit. The two become trapped in a lost, lush land presided over by the mad Duke Cyril and the entombed object of his desire. In Thule, Prince Valiant defends the King of the Inner Lands from a war party led by a giant. Fantagraphics, 2019...More.

Our Highest Recommendation. By Gary Gianni. Foreword by Mike Mignola. Modern illustration master Gianni opens the vaults to his work on the legendary Prince Valiant Sunday Page, written by Mark Schultz. Gianni assumed the helm of the strip after John Cullen Murphy but far too few fans have seen his several years of pages, let alone the amazing work behind the published pages...until now. Every aspect of the new era of the strip is covered here, with a particular focus on Gianni's preliminary sketches and production methods. Flesk, 2008...More.

We have the 1952, 1954 and 1955 Hastings House prose & art books, Prince Valiant Fights Attila the Hun [RB288], Prince Valiant's Perilous Voyage (Book 4, RB289) and Prince Valiant and the Golden Princess (Book 5, two copies, RB289 and RB290). All are first editions and $75 each.

We also have one copy of The Young Knight: A Tale of Medieval Times by Hal Foster, 1945, in very good condition [RB293. $75]. See the website for more details and conditions of older books, or call.

Also pictured at the top of the screen is Cartoon County by Cullen Murphy. This is a very good read, all about working on Prince Valiant with his father, John Cullen Murphy, and with Hal Foster himself. Cullen wrote PV for many years after Foster turned over the reigns. He also thrived in a hotbed of artists coming and going where they lived. Now on sale. [CARCH. $27.00, $14.99]. This is highly recommended.

JAMES WARREN EMPIRE OF MONSTERS The Man Behind Creepy, Vampirella, and Famous Monsters
Unauthorized and fascinating! Highly Recommended. By Bill Schelly. Bill Schelly's Empire of Monsters features numerous eye-opening, often outrageous anecdotes about James Warren, a colorful, larger-than-life figure whose ability as a publisher, promoter, and provocateur makes him a fascinating character study. He was the visionary publisher of Famous Monsters of Filmland, the magazine that fueled the movie monster craze of the 1960s, and inspired filmmakers Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Joe Dante. With Creepy and Eerie, Warren popularized the black-and-white comics magazine and ran covers by the legendary painter Frank Frazetta before Frazetta was a superstar. Fantagraphics, 2019...More.

Recommended. Foreword by Jeff A. Menges. Illustrator and painter Harvey Dunn was deeply influenced by Howard Pyle. Pyle's Brandywine students became some of the most important and well-regarded artists of the twentieth century, including N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Violet Oakley, Jessie Willcox Smith...and Dunn, who went on to influence the next generation of artists. During the course of an evening in 1934, while Dunn was teaching at Grand Central School of the Arts, Miss Taylor recorded his comments and criticisms. These notes later surfaced in a slim, limited-edition volume. Enhanced by Dunn's striking woodcut images, the book provides a flavorful re-creation of the atmosphere in his classroom. Michael Parkes

MICHAEL PARKES Paintings Drawings Stone Lithographs 1977-1992
Warehouse, 1993. Second edition. By Michael Parkes. Michael Parkes (born in 1944) is an American artist and sculptor. He studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas and settled in Spain in 1975. Numerous international exhibitions underline the importance of Parkes' work. What is unusual about him is that in his paintings and lithos, metaphysical and spiritual elements are joined to reality. In this fantasy world of Parkes, the laws of earthly reality are abolished, and space and time enter into their own "motionless" communion. Steltman, 1993. Slight corner dent and pages rough at bottom edge....More.

From the sexy Druuna to this is a leap, but he has done historical-oriented work at times in Druuna's travels through time. News and Notes

The Art of Mac Raboy

Coming from Twomorrows in September. I'm excited about this and orders have already been strong just from our email listing here. I was more than a little worried it might sell out quickly like Twomorrows' previous art book on Reed Crandall. So I have not only ordered a significant number but also have additional copies put aside, reserved for us. This is the first-ever book on this important artist, and he's one of my personal favorites as well as very popular for his wartime comic covers on Captain Marvel Jr. and Master Comics. So we've made this the cover feature for our next catalog, which will be in your hands in August. Here's a sneak peak at the cool issue of the Captain Marvel Jr. comic that we will be adapting to our catalog cover, as well as the cover of the book itself.

San Diego Comic-Con Signing

I will be doing a signing at the Dark Horse Booth on Thursday, July 18th, from 4-5pm, for my contribution to the new book Pros and (Comic) Cons. I'll also be on panels on Friday and Saturday, see your schedule for times. Hope to see many of you at the show.
