Wordless Novels

WHITE COLLAR NOVEL IN LINOCUTS
First-ever new printing of the 1940 rarity. Recommended. By Giacomo Patri. Introduction by Rockwell Kent. Because of its controversial depictions of class struggle, unionization, and abortion, White Collar was shunned by publishers, and the author was forced to print his own editions. Early copies are extremely rare; this Dover edition marks the volume's first return to print in decades, and its very first appearance in hardcover. The struggles and injustices faced by workers during the Great Depression spring to graphic life in this powerful wordless novel, which traces a middle-class family's downward spiral. Dover, 2016. ...More.

A timeless story told in a language that knows no country—a wordless novel that, despite its muteness, is more powerful than the written or the spoken word. First published in 1957, this is a lost classic, newly discovered and remastered--it's a celebration of art and the story of recurring war as Si Lewen experienced it over 90 years, watching the joyful parades that marked the end of World War I lead into the death marches of World War II and the Korean War. Reproduced in a unique two-sided accordion-fold format with an extensive overview of the artist's career on the reverse side. Abrams, 2016. ...More.

WORRY DOLL
Introduction by Shaun Tan. By Matt Coyle. ". . . Coyle's work is groundbreaking. The imagery in Worry Doll is so far ahead of anything out there in terms of visual sophistication that it suggests a new way forward for the genre—maybe a new genre altogether." — Sebastian Smee, The Daily Telegraph. A creepy, photo-realistic story told in line art, like a wordless novel but with brief text on the facing pages. A group of dolls find their hosts murdered and flee the crime scene, setting out on a nightmarish road trip. Creepy like Neil Gaiman's Coraline. Outstanding artwork. Dover, 2016. The Death Card. Highly Recommended. By Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart. After facing off for a second time against the Vampire of Prague, Hellboy, dead and in Hell, comes down with a fatal illness, and seeks the help of an incompetent team of doctors. As he explores the geography of Hell, learning little from a confused pair of map makers, Hellboy gets a glimpse of the new World Tree that he helped to create, stands accused of murder by his own sister and, in a way, brings about the destruction of Pandemonium itself. Is this the end of Hellboy? Written and drawn entirely by Mignola. Dark Horse, 2014. ...More.

Actual print size is 11x14 Inches. Around this time there was a boomlet of "photo-print" publishing, allowing artists to print and sell very limited editions of their work. THE WORLD OF A WAYWARD COMIC BOOK ARTIST
Highly Recommended. By Sandy Plunkett, foreword by Michael WM Kaluta. With influences as diverse as Dave Stevens, Frank Frazetta, and Bernie Wrightson, and maybe a little Vaughn Bode! If you like the work of these artists, you really should not miss this! He takes inspiration from them, but this work is entirely his own--with a fine-line, EC style. A fascinating look at the creative processes of Sandy Plunkett--not a "name" in comics but he's done some gorgeous work. A self-taught illustrator and comic book artist, Plunkett came of age in New York City during the '60s and '70s and began drawing for Marvel Comics at eighteen. Swallow, 2010. . Mature Readers

First up is the excellent Shame by John Bolton. This was first published in three parts, which we still offer, and is now collected all in one. It's not terribly adult, but since it has a lot of nudity I'm putting it here. Wonderful sinister story of witches and the supernatural, by the artist of Marada, The She Wolf (Marvel, with Chris Claremont), Aliens/Predator, Swamp Thing, Batman/Joker. Check out his website.

Next up is a new collection from French artist Liberatore: Le Donne. Nudes and portraits of women—with an edge. We also still have the first Liberatore collection, Liberatore's Women. It was published by Kitchen Sink way back in 1998. When they closed up shop, we ended up with a pallet of these, so this $24.95 hardcover is STILL available only from us—for only five bucks! [LIBHC. $24.95, your price $5].

Sweet Things is a new pin-up collection by Keith Garvey, from SQP. This is available as both a regular edition and as a signed limited edition with an extra print, limited to just 100. This follows up his 2015 collection, Guilty Pleasures [GUPL. $14.95] also from SQP.
