New Signed Sketchbooks

Recommended. By Eliza Ivanova. Raised in Bulgaria, Eliza Ivanova has worked at Pixar since 2010. This is her first collection. It covers work from 2012 to 2017 and is a sample of a full art book of her work which we will be handling when ready. Her work is all about faces and figures, serious studies in graphite (some with a second color) that remind us strongly of the work of Kent Williams and a bit of Claire Wendling. We've also got portraits of Asians, a figure on horseback, fantasy people, a frog, a topless alien woman, and demons. Eliza Ivanova, 2017...More.

Joseph Michael Linsner's seductive but devilish pin-up girl, Sinful Suzi, in an all new sketchbook for 2017--we're treated to two new sketchbooks from him this year. Suzi is his bad girl, with pierced nipples and skimpy bikini bottoms. But mostly she's at least topless, if not also bottomless here. Includes a design for a new Sinful Suzi statue, and a nice long commentary by Linsner about Suzi's first creation in 2003, and her various appearances up to today. In full color, with a double-page centerfold. Joseph Michael Linsner, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

Highly Recommended. By Lewis Trondheim. Art by Nicolas Keramidas. It's a "lost" 1965 Disney epic, deemed too wild for publication and saved only in tantalizing fragments... or is it? Serialized in the imaginary Mickey's Quest comics from Dell in 1965-69, here the creators take us on a wild ride of bizarre adventures underground, underwater, and in outer space, with Donald, Mickey and the kids. When Pegleg Pete and the Beagle Boys shrink and steal Scrooge's Money Bin, Mickey and Donald must track them down—in what is really a brand-new album-length thriller by comics masters Lewis Trondheim and Nicolas Keramidas, told in an amazing indy style and presented like a treasure suspended in time! YUMMY The Good Girl Art of Matt Dixon
Recommended. No nudity here, but lots of pretty ladies who have a lot on display and are not shy about displaying it. Dixon loves genre ladies, fairy tale characters, witches, a startling fairy, spear-wielding girls, several girls with monster buddies, a pirate girl, a space girl in a skintight costume, a green alien lady, an Indiana Jones type, two mermaids, one with tentacles instead of fins. And some nicely serious portraits of darker ladies, showing Dixon's skill as a serious artist. It's a fun collection, mostly good clean fun but sometimes with a serious twist of fantasy horror. Tony DiTerlizzi

Every order this week will get a handsome little card promoting Tony’s exhibit at the Norman Rockwell Museum November 11, 2017 to May 28, 2018. We’re picturing here one of the two wonderful illustrations on the card. Last week we relisted Tony’s art book, which he specially signed for us at San Diego, and also his signed limited edition, which I maintain is one of the most handsome deluxe editions I’ve seen in some time. We’re lucky it’s still available from Dark Horse. See our website for full details on these.
Signed & limited, 500! Highly Recommended. New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi has been creating children's books for nearly two decades. From fanciful picture books like The Spider & The Fly (a Caldecott Honor book), to chapter books like Kenny and The Dragon and the WondLa trilogy, DiTerlizzi imbues his stories with a rich imagination. With Holly Black, he created the middle-grade series, The Spiderwick Chronicles, which has sold millions of copies, been adapted into a feature film, and been translated in over thirty countries. News and Notes

San Diego Comic-Con Report

I think I outdid myself this year with postings to Facebook, so I hope you can see those highlights on our Facebook page. We just this week posted some of our favorite costumes; previously we posted Tony Diterlizzi’s signing, Sergio Aragones and Scott Shaw, my favorite new vintage comics, our booth in action, etc.

When all was done, we were quite pleased at how well things went in our new smaller space and new location. It represented a WHOLE lot less stress and work for us; we had about about the equivalent of 2/3’s of a booth, about 60 square feet, instead of last year’s three booths, which was 300 square feet. We did about just under 50% of the sales we did last year, which is good in comparison, with far less expenses. Just under half the sales was for new items, just over half was vintage OP and rare books, the kind we are now posting our our Rare and Out of Print website category.

Our New Items bestsellers at Comic-Con comprises an interesting list:

The Airship Adventures of Little Nemo [AIRLN. $15]
The Art of Reginald Heade [ARRHH. $49]
Beauty and the Beast by Kinuko Craft (with signed color bookplate: BEBEH. $17.99]

Cave Paintings The Art of Budd Root--Our #1 seller, we sold out [CAVPH. $30]
Ditko Unleashed HC Hurt [DITUHR. $59.99, your price $29.99] – This also sold out there, but we still have copies here.
Illustrator’s Quarterly Special 1: Spanish Artists [IQS01, $34.99] – Another sell-out. The publisher in England just announced this is going out of print. Since they don’t normally reprint their material, I have brought in a good batch of copies--but they won’t last forever.

Masters of Spanish Comic Book Art [MASCBAH. $39.99] – Another sell-out, this coincidentally came out around the same time as the Illustrator’s Special. But it is an entirely different book, while covering some of the same artists.

Images #13 [IMA13. $30, your price $9.95] – My old partner Jim Vadeboncoeur’s fine magazine, the final and biggest issue.
Take That Adolf: The Fighting Comic Books of the Second World War [TAKTA. $29.99, your price $26.99]

Titillation: Vintage Pulp Magazine Pin-Up Art of Peter Driben [TITIL. $39.95]
Valerian and Laureline: Ambassador of the Shadows [AMBSH. $19.95] and Complete Collection Vol 1 [VAL01H. $29.99, your price $26.99]

Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse Tales [WDMH. $19.99, your price $9.95]
Weinberg Tales [WEINT. $30]
World of Mucha: A Journey to Two Fairylands, Paris and Czech [WORMU. $39.95]

While I was away at Comic-Con, I was not able to write descriptions for the new items nor pick the extra scans for each book. I’ll be catching up on this over the next week or so. If you noticed this and wanted to see or read more, check back on the new items from our July 14 and July 31 emails.

I’ll have news of upcoming projects that we learned about in next week’s email. Due to the length of this week’s email, I’ve tabled a new batch of Bargain Books. They’ll be back next week.
