ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #57
Highly Recommended. Art by Earl Mayan, Peter Stevens, and W.E. Hill. The spectacular art of Earl Mayan, best known for his photographically detailed slick magazine illustrations of the 1950s. Written by the artist's daughter, the profile presents a behind the scenes look at the creation of his finest illustrations, as well as dozens of reproductions of his original paintings, drawings, and rare reference photographs. The second feature examines the link between William Faulkner's paperbacks and the influential and widely imitated cover art of James Avati. And James Witek explores the graphics used in marketing bubblegum cards through the decades. Illustrated Press, 2017...More.

This is a fine book that I think may have slipped below the radar for many people. It came out when I was taking a sabbatical from this business and my guys here probably didn't promote it as much as I would have. So, since Underwood still had stock, you get a real bargain price on a superb book.

REVOLUTION The Art of John Foster Deluxe Signed
Signed, limited, 300, in slipcase. Highly Recommended. Art by Jon Foster. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, and Irene Gallo. Jon Foster creates irresistibly dark demimondes populated by retro robots, Star Wars villains, and creepy goth-inspired creatures that recall the work of James Gurney (Dinotopia), Rick Berry, H. R. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. Walt Disney

OSWALD THE LUCKY RABBIT The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons
Recommended. By David A. Bossert. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created in 1927 by Walt Disney and his team, and ran through 26 cartoon shorts. Not without fits and starts, the series and its impish title character were an instant hit with audiences. At the end of that initial run, Walt lost the contract to Oswald, which prompted his creation of...Mickey Mouse. Over the years, Oswald became a footnote in the Disney story . . . until 2006, when The Walt Disney Company recovered rights to Walt s twenty-six shorts. Disney Editions, 2017...More.

New Calla Books-Illustrated Fiction

THE CALL OF THE WILD
Facsimile of the 1912 edition. Recommended. By Jack London. Art by Paul Bransom. Jack London's novels and rugged individualism embodied American hopes, frustrations, and romantic longings in the turbulent early years of the twentieth century, an era infused with the wonder and excitement of great technological and historic change. The author's restless spirit, taste for excitement, and probing mind led him on a series of hard-edged adventures from the Yukon to the South Seas. Out of these sometimes harrowing experiences — and his fascination with the theories of such thinkers as Darwin, Spencer, and Marx — came the inspiration for adventure novels that made him one of America's most popular writers. Flesk Books Buy-One, Get-One-Free Sale

This went out as a special email from us on August 29th. If you missed it, you can see it all right here (scroll to the bottom of the 9/1/17 Weekly New Items). We still have plenty of the two free James Bama books. One of the most popular Flesk books that were ordered to get these was James Bama American Realist, which is already on sale [JMH. $34.95, your price $14.95].

Also popular title is the new new-cover edition of Frank Cho’s Drawing Beautiful Women [DRBWPH. $34.95]. And a third is another sale book, The Prince Valiant Page by Gary Gianni [PVPH. $29.95, your price $9.95]. Two Terry Dodson Sketchbooks have sold well, as well as the Arthur Adams Monsters Attack.

So get your free books--just order any Flesk book to get a free book along with it (limit 2 books per order) and, please, you have to order a book. We’ve fielded a couple customers who just asked for the free books and sent us $3.95 postage. It doesn’t work that way! BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE.

The Illustrators Quarterly

The Special Spanish Artists edition is going out of print. We were able to place one final order, so we have plenty for now, but it has been very popular. We featured it on our latest catalog’s cover, the Red Sonja cover by Sanjulian.

Also almost gone is the Reed Crandall Hardcover (the softcover has not yet formally been announced, so it will be unavailable for a while) and also the Kirby 100 special hardcover. We have less than ten copies of each of these and they are going quickly.

Magic Rite of Drawing: Art and Technique by Thomas Haller Buchanan

Also very low in stock, just six copies left, is the hardcover edition of this fine new book. But the good news is he’s done a special signed bookplate that we have now added to both the remaining hardcovers and the softcover edition. It features a nude drawing, “The Frost Giant’s Daughter” and we’re picturing it here. If you already ordered either edition from us, ask and we’ll send the bookplate to you with your next order.

Upcoming Comic and Book Shows

Pretty late notice, but we’ll be exhibiting at the Sacramento Book Fair Saturday September 9th. I’m still mentioning it because I’m always surprised to have so many customers come by and say hello.

And back in Sacramento for the comic book show, Sac Comic-Con, Sunday, October 8th.

Coming up, we’ll also be exhibiting at the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair Saturday and Sunday October 14th and 15th.

The Fall Houston, Texas show that we usually do has been cancelled, but there will be a new one beginning next Spring and we will be there. And due to another trip we are making east, we’re going to take a pass this year on the Boston Antiquarian Book Show in November. Sorry to miss you folks this time, but we’ll be back next year.
