Where do I begin? There are so many excellent new items. A new Illustration and Illustrator's Quarterly, two IQ specials including one on Don Lawrence, and Del Castillo's superlative Complete Adventures of the Three Musketeers.

A Ploog & Bisley collaboration, Planet of the Apes by Rod Serling, the latest Bloom County, Provocative Colette--which I quite like—and a whole bunch of offbeat pulp reprints. ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #61 Earl Moran
Highly Recommended. Art by Earl Moran and Thomas Nast. Finally, a feature article on the long neglected sexy pin-up illustrations of the brilliant Earl Moran, perhaps best remembered for his pin-up paintings featuring a young and unknown Marilyn Monroe--and many nudes! In his time, his images were as widely known as those of Elvgren and Vargas. Numerous examples of his original art, printed tear sheets and covers, and rare, previously unpublished photographs. Also: Thomas Nast, best known of the late 1800s editorial cartoonists. Illustrated Press, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: IL61
Magazine, 8x11, 80pg, Partial Color
$15.00

All available back issues are on our website, along with his Illustrated Press Art Books. Haddom Sundblom should be out in September, and next up are books on Pruett Carter, Mead Schaeffer, and the pin-up master, Enoch Bolles! These three are not on our website yet, but will be when formally announced.

Nothing before has been written about these highly talented artists and this special is packed with dramatic cover art scanned directly from the originals. ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY SPECIAL #3 The Art of Don Lawrence
Our Highest Recommendation. By Diego Cordoba. With Don Lawrence. From British art magazine Illustrators Quarterly comes a long overdue look at the illustrations and comic strip art of Don Lawrence. He is regarded as one of the truly greats of British comic strip art and there has never been a book devoted to his whole career. The volume has examples of his wonderful illustrations from Look and Learn, Ranger, and Once Upon a Time as well as comic strips Karl the Viking, Olac the Gladiator, better known in the U.S. due to long-ago editions, The Trigan Empire and Storm. THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS
Our Highest Recommendation. Collected in a single volume for the first time, this classic of comic strip adaptation brings to life all the action and poignancy of Alexandre Dumas' novel and its sequels. Arturo Del Castillo was one of the greatest masters of the comic strip. His artistic skill is recognised internationally and his great artistry on The Three MusketeersThe Man in the Iron Mask, and The King's Musketeers (all included here) is regarded as some of the finest pen and ink work ever created for comic strips. This includes Georgette Heyer, Sax Rohmer, C. S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian and, of course, George MacDonald Fraser of Flashman fame. His career began in London at the end of the 1920s, where he became a noted and respected illustrator and commercial artist. PLANET OF THE APES Visionaries
Reimagining of a sci-fi classic. Recommended. By By Rod Serling and Dana Gould. Art by Chad Lewis. Based on the original screenplay for Planet of the Apes by The Twilight Zone‘s Rod Serling. On the road to making the landmark science-fiction classic, 20th Century Fox commissioned Serling to adapt the source material. His first draft, which was drastically revised before filming, is a radically different vision of the franchise than the one the world has come to know and love. Now, for the first time in any medium, that vision is fully realized as a graphic novel adapted by acclaimed actor/comedian/writer Dana Gould (The Simpsons) and Chad Lewis (Avengers Origins). THE PROVOCATIVE COLETTE
Adapted from the 1st publication in France in 2017. Recommended. By Annie Goetzinger. From her marriage at the age of 20, until her divorce, the exotic life of Moulin Rouge dancer and performer Colette. Incredibly complex, powerfully determined, truly gifted, Colette challenged herself to reinvent her life and assert herself as a free woman. In her day, her behavior scandalized and vexed the establishment. But in the end, she helped to free women in their thinking. From her voluptuous performance in a see-through costume in "Egyptian Dream"--the story of an Egyptologist who falls in love with a mummy...to president of France's prestigious Académie Goncourt, among many other honors as one of France's preeminent authors. Nudity, sexual situations. NBM, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

THE COMPLETE CASES OF INSPECTOR ALLHOFF Volume 1
From Dime Detective, 1938-46. By D.L. Champion. Brilliant, decisive, and hard-charging, Deputy Inspector Allhoff was the NYPD's ace detective until bullets from a mobster's machine gun robbed him of his legs, his career, and—in the opinion of an associate—his sanity. Created by D.L. Champion, Inspector Allhoff defied most conventions of detective-pulp fiction. He could never be confused for one of Raymond Chandler's knights errant, trudging down those mean streets. Allhoff was no Rover Boy in trench coat and fedora. He was, in fact, a sadist and a psychopath! Altus, 2014...More.

THE COMPLETE CASES OF SEEKAY
From Strange Detective Mysteries and Detective Tales, 1937-38. By Paul Ernst. Art by John Fleming Gould. Introduction by Will Murray. The cases he takes up are often bizarre and grotesque, but no more so than this anonymous private investigator himself: Seekay's entire face is covered by a mask of pink celluloid, with only his “burning black eyes” visible to those who come into contact with him—and who almost invariably are unnerved by the experience, whether friend or foe. Needle Mike found himself embroiled in nearly 20 hard-boiled mysteries originally published between 1935 and 1938 in the pages of Dime Detective, the prestigious crime pulp second only to the legendary Black Mask in its impact on the genre. News and Notes

Russ Heath leaves us

He was a brilliant artist who never asked for the limelight. He just quietly did his job in his own fashion...with accuracy to detail, with superb design, with brilliant inking. The Haunted Tank, Sgt. Rock, The Sea Devils, so much wonderful work for Atlas in one story after another in the 1950s. And Atlas covers, too!

I didn’t know Russ well, but well enough to say hello and catch up when he came by my booth at shows, such as the old WonderCon in Oakland. I’m fortunate to own one of his recreations, thanks to dealer Steve Wyatt. Steve was who representing Russ and offered it to me. Here it is. Russ’ father was the model for the sheriff in back.

And here is a link to our Facebook page with a very good article from the Heritage Auctions site.
