TOM LOVELL ILLUSTRATOR
New Edition. Limited to 900. Our Highest Recommendation. By Daniel Zimmer. Tom Lovell is widely known today for his Western and fine art work, and previous books focused almost exclusively on this side of his career. This branches out to explore the artist's earlier days as an illustrator. Featuring over 270 beautiful illustrations reproduced from the original paintings and drawings, as well as scores of rarely seen tear sheets from the pulps, the slicks, and beyond, circa the 1930s to the mid-70s. Illustrated Press, 2019...More.

THE BOOK OF WEIRDO
Highly Recommended. By Jon B. Cooke. The Book of Weirdo is a hugely entertaining examination of Weirdo magazine, Robert Crumb's legendary and long-running humor comics anthology from the 1980s. Crumb himself calls this “a great book” and “the definitive work on the subject.” Weirdo influenced a generation of cartoonists, and served as a creative refuge for underground comix veterans and training ground for new creators. This book features the comprehensive story of the fondly-recalled magazine, along with testimonials from over 130 of the mag's contributors, plus interviews withWeirdo’s three editors: Crumb himself, Peter “Hate” Bagge, and Aline Kominsky-Crumb, as well as publisher “Baba Ron” Turner. R. CRUMB SHORT HISTORY OF AMERICA POSTER
From 1981. Highly Recommended. By Robert Crumb. Robert Crumb is an artist and illustrator recognized for the distinctive style of his drawings and his critical, satirical, subversive view of the American mainstream. While he is perhaps best known for his Keep on Truckin' and Fritz the Cat cartoons, his "Short History of America" series is an urbanist classic. Arguably his most timeless image, this series shows the gradual metamorphosis of a single plot of land from virgin wilderness to urban decay in 12 panels. It first appeared in black & white in 1979 in the ecological magazine Co-Evolutionary Quarterly and in Snoid Comics. It was rearranged and colored by Peter Poplaski in 1981 and quickly became Kitchen Sink Press' best-selling poster. Kitchen Sink Press, 1981. Out of Print....More.

Stanislaus Szukalski

BEHOLD!!! THE PROTONG
Stanislav Szukalski (1893–1987) was a Polish-born sculptor, writer, graphic artist, and heretic. Highly regarded in both the US and Poland between the World Wars, he lapsed into obscurity, living and working in “America's Cultural Siberia” (Southern California) until comic art collector Glenn Bray rediscovered him in 1973. Last Gasp, 2019...More.

Item Code: BEHOH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x11, 160pg, Text/Partial Color
$39.95

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently produced a Netflix documentary film on this amazing artist: "Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski", finally giving his career and artwork the attention it deserves. Last Gasp did two books on him many years ago, and Behold The Protong is a new edition of one of these.

Collector and publisher Glenn Bray (The Blighted Eye, The Original Art of Basil Wolverton), befriended Szukalski at the very end of his long life, and helped to publicize his work, bringing it to the attention of comic fans and artists, many of whom became big admirers. We also have just one copy of Szukalski, a small booklet published in 1989 [RB1061. $40.00].

THE WORK OF SZUKALSKI
By Stanislav Szukalski. Quarto, brown cloth stamped in gilt. First edition, number 830 of an unspecified limited edition (believed to be 1,000 or fewer) of a scarce monograph on the Polish artist.

Issued as is with no jacket. Slight waviness to pages, still quite a sharp, near fine copy of the very first book on this illustrator. One other monograph was done on him, also issued in Chicago, but it was even more limited and is even more difficult to find. We found just two copies of this on the Internet current, one at $3000, and one not as nice as ours at $2400.

Szukalski created many bold, dramatic Art Deco styled sculptures in larger than life size as outdoor exhibits in his homeland of Poland. But legend has it they were pulled down and destroyed by the Nazis when Hitler invaded in WWII. The artist was a huge deal in his homeland in the 1920s and 1930s. before the war. Light Wear. Covici-McGee, 1923. Out of Print.. Near Fine....More.
