A New Illustration Magazine, Peanuts Anniversary, Robert E. Howard, and more 2021 calendars.

Our latest catalog is ready for you to download. Click on any item in it for longer descriptions and additional scans of each item.

California Fires: It's a short list this week, we've been closed for two days as PG&E turned off the electricity due to high winds and the danger of wildfires. We can see their smoke every day here. We could not ship on Tuesday and Wednesday, but will catch up Thursday and Friday. Our website is always up and running, but we can't answer the phones or ship when these occasional shutdowns occur. Thanks for your patience.

Since new items are a bit short this week, I've supplemented our listings with some favorite tie-in items that you might have missed.

Our Highest Recommendation. Art by Robert O. Reid, J.F. Kernan, and Neysa McMein. Three successful illustrators, two new to us but no less interesting, and Robert O. Reid, Colliers artist extraordinaire, and master of "cartoon realism." J.F. Kernan, best known for his spectacular magazine spots and nostalgia covers for The Saturday Evening Post of the 1930s and 40s. Neysa McMein is featured, a fantastic female magazine illustrator from the 1930s and 40s whose pictures of beautiful women dominated McCall's covers. Illustrated Press, 2020....More.

Item Code: IL69
Magazine, 9x11, 80pg, Partial Color

This issue makes the case for buying every issue of this fine magazine, not just cherry-picking ones with artists you recognize. I'm eager to read about three people I know next to nothing about. See our website for back issues, including a good selection of out of print numbers.

Also from the publisher of Illustration Magazine, find here for all of their available art books. We just lost another one, the wonderful Mead Schaeffer quickly and quite unexpectedly sold out. Get your favorites before they are gone. Each one is limited to just 900 copies.

Almost Gone! Limited, 900! Third Printing. Our Highest Recommendation. By Daniel Zimmer. Filled with beautiful illustrations reproduced almost exclusively from the original paintings and drawings. This spectacular book explores Cornwell (1892-1960), American illustrator and muralist. His oil paintings were frequently featured in popular magazines and books as literary illustrations, advertisements, and posters supporting the war effort. Throughout the first half of the 20th century he was a dominant presence in American illustration. At the peak of his popularity he was nicknamed the "Dean of Illustrators". Illustrated Press, 2020....More.

Item Code: ARTDCH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 224pg, Full Color

Almost Gone! Limited, 900. Highly Recommended. Stanley Meltzoff was one of the first paperback cover artists to be noted for his work in the science fiction field, painting dramatic images that escaped the pulp influence evident in most other science fiction covers of the 1950s and 60s, for publishers from Ballantine to Ace. He also did paperback and digest cover paintings in other genres, from iconic racy themes to mystery/detective. Meltzoff also produced work for slick magazines, including Scientific American, Life, Fortune, and the Saturday Evening Post. Illustrated Press, 2020....More.

Item Code: STANMH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 224pg, Full Color

Almost Gone! Limited, 900. Highly Recommended. By David Saunders. This is the consummate art book on the life of pulp, paperback, and men's adventure magazine artist Rafael DeSoto, with reproductions taken directly from DeSoto's original paintings, as well as working drawings, reference photos, rare proof sheets of pulp and paperback covers, as well as historic family photos. He began drawing pulp covers in 1932 and because he was 4F, was one of very few pulp artists to work through the war years. He worked in pulps until the very end in the early 1950s, while expanding into doing paperback covers for Ace, Bantam, Dell, Lion, Signet, and Pocket Books, including the iconic "H Is For Heroin." He also worked for the slicks and for men's magazines. Illustrated Press, 2019....More.

So here we have the best of the strips, all shot from the original art, and exclusive, rare, and unpublished original art and developmental work— much of which has never been seen before! SONGS OF GIANTS The Poetry of Pulp Signed
Signed & numbered, 1000! With oversized illustrated bookmark, also signed. Recommended. By Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs et al. Art by Mark Wheatley. An extremely handsome collection of the very best horror, dark fantasy, and heroic sword and sorcery poetry written by three giants of pulp literature; Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. P. Lovecraft. Extravagantly illustrated by Mark Wheatley on every single page, with flamboyant, dramatic illustrations that remind us of Berni Wrightson's and Gary Gianni's work. Plus gorgeous full color endpapers of stunning, demonic cats. With an introduction by Jack McDevitt, "Arming the Valkyries." Insight Studio Group, 2019....More.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN The Original Unabridged Adventures of the World's Greatest Fantasy Hero
Recommended. By Robert E. Howard. Robert E. Howard's original, unedited stories. The 10 works here include Howard's essay "The Hyborian Age," "Shadows in the Moonlight," "Queen of the Black Coast," "The Devil in Iron," "People of the Black Circle," “A Witch Shall Be Born,” "Jewels of Gwalur," "Beyond the Black River" (one of my favorites), "Shadows in Zamboula", and "Red Nails." Howard was a master of his craft, creating a hero as powerful and exciting as any in literature. Introduction by Rod Green. Prion, 2018....More.

Our Highest Recommendation. By AndrewSteven Damsits, Barry Klugerman. A magnificent, best-ever look at Krenkel's entire career. Oversized. Loaded with previously unpublished work. One of the most renowned fantasy artists of the 20th century. Krenkel's far-reaching influence on--and work with--artists like Frazetta, Williamson, Kaluta and Jeffrey Jones, to name but a few, was immeasurable and cannot be overstated. Krenkel illustrated Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard and others--but much of his work, full-blown paintings and illustrations, often were unpublished and never seen by even his biggest fans. IDW, 2019....More.

Pulp Fiction

Recommended. The Complete Black Mask Cases of Luther McGavock. By Merle Constiner. Art by Peter Kuhloff. Cover art by Rafael DeSoto. These Luther McGavock stories take him to small towns in the Tennessee hill-country. These are not your garden variety hardboiled detective yarns. These Black Mask stories are so rich in place and detail that they almost seem a travelogue of small-town life in the Deep South. Written by one of the most polished writers to see print in Black Mask, author Merle Constiner's writing is vivid, his characters complex, and his mysteries deep. Black Mask, 2020....More.

Illustrated with 750 magazine covers and original paintings, a complete and lively history of this unique literary form, covering genres individually (hero pulps--two chapters--spicy, western & adventure, sci-fi, crime, aviation, horror & fantasy) and identifying key titles, authors, and stories. PULP ATTACK 2021 Calendar
Recommended. Some classics, like the cover, Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman, and Sin on Wheels. But many fresh images new to us: Night Nurse: The Unashamed, The Root of His Evil, Satan was a Man, Naughtipuss, Come Sin With Me, a stunning full nude The Wild One, and She Was High on Grass. These look to me like rare softcore digest covers from the 1940s and early 50s, maybe a vintage paperback or two, one movie poster and one magazine cover, Real Men with “Lady With the Whip.” Tushita, 2020. Mature Readers

We have two new adult calendars this week, Derrieres and Naked. Both are very tasteful and in fact as close to fine art as you can get. They remind me of the famous nude photographers, such as Ruth Bernhard and Andre de Dienes. And you may recall Boris Vallejo did a book of nude photography at one time. These are very much in that vein. (Sorry, we don't have one of those in stock right now).

See our website for our section on nude photography, and books by Boris Vallejo. You can also take a look at all of the adult calendars in stock already this year.
