LOVE AND ROCKETS The Sketchbooks
Recommended. Fantagraphics published two sketchbook volumes in 1989 and 1992; now, a single volume collects both PLUS a trove of other rarely-seen artwork. Both Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez developed their skills in the pages of Love & Rockets, and as quickly as any artists ever have. But they built up to their 1981 self-published debut with years of experiments, fan art, zine illustrations, early short comics, and gig posters, and continued to work out in personal sketchbooks after establishing themselves as the preeminent cartoonists they became. Includes good girl art, nudity and adult material. Fantagraphics, 2024. Mature Readers Due: Apr....More.

Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez are now recognized as two of the greatest cartoonists, award-winning, world-renowned, critically acclaimed. But in 1982 when the first issue of Love and Rockets came out, they (occasionally working with their brother, Mario) were two young, struggling, unknown cartoonists who were bucking the dominant comic book trend of costumed characters and adolescent content with intimate, complex, humane, novelistic stories told in comics form. GREEN LANTERN / GREEN ARROW Hard Traveling Heroes Omnibus
Our Highest Recommendation. Should heroes be concerned with the galaxy when they can’t help their own planet? It’s a pointed question that Green Arrow asks Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) . Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams tackle subjects in this superhero story that had never been seen in mainstream comics before — drugs, violence, homelessness. Travel across the United States with Oliver Queen and Hal Jordan as their superhero alter egos try to understand the subtleties of issues that our country was facing in the 1970s. STAN MACK'S REAL LIFE FUNNIES
Sketchbook in hand, Stan Mack haunted the New York City environs, watching, listening, overhearing, and interviewing its inhabitants. He drew a comic strip every week based on what he saw and heard, famously using verbatim dialogue for his graphic dramatizations. A mixture of humor, spontaneity, serendipity, and weirdness, Mack’s comic strip snapshots caught New Yorkers — whether it is an extortionist calligrapher, a baby evading arrest at her first protest, a stroll up Broadway with a ferret, an evening with a male liberationist, or an unlucky-in-love dolphin trainer — being who they are in all their unguarded and uninhibited glory. A DOORWAY TO JOE The Art of Joe Coleman
150 paintings. Testimonials by fellow artists and creators. Joe Coleman paints incredibly detailed portraits of sinners, saints, freaks, and personal friends that collectively present a dark history of America. Painting with a single-hair brush and a jeweler's loupe, the artist states he only knows when the painting is done because he runs out of room on the canvas. With a body of work that spans five decades (including his early work as a comic book artist), Coleman's work includes subjects such as Hank Williams, Ed Gein, Jayne Mansfield, and his wife and muse, Whitney Ward. Coleman not only captures his subject's likeness, but his portraits also serve as ambitious narratives of the subject's life. Told in lozenges scattered throughout the often-larger-than-life works, the portraits contain scenes from the subject's life and words and phrases. Coleman is not afraid to explore the dark reaches of the human psyche, but also portrays a distinct humanity in his subjects and often includes a touch of humor. Fantagraphics, 2024. Furthermore, as this magnificent book reveals, he was also a skilled sculptor, painter, and cartoonist. We just did LA Rare Books in Pasadena. The “atmospheric river” may have kept some people home, and definitely delayed our trip back but by just a few hours. We got back to find out we had no power at the house for three days—aside from our generator, which thankfully is working fine. Trials in the book world!

Meanwhile, here is Anne’s and my website, which is constantly seeing new books listed thanks to Anne’s hard work. You can also sign up for her occasional emails.

Alcala, Redondo, Niño, deZuniga, Alex Toth Art at Heritage Auctions

Publisher Manual Auad (Art of Alex Toth, Nestor Redondo, Henry Patrick Raleigh, Frank Brangwyn, Jordi Bernet) has consigned some of his collection of original art to me, which I’m submitting for him to Heritage Auctions (ha.com).

It includes the top Filipino artists: Frank Redondo, Alex Niño, Alfredo Alcala, Jerry Talaoc, and Tony DeZuniga, including works published in the U.S. and also only in Filipino comics, such as Alcala’s sexy heroine Anadonda, from the early 1970s. Also a binder full of Alex Toth drawings, doodles and storyboards. And work by American illustrators including Al Williamson’s Secret Agent Corrigan (dailies) and Al McWilliam’s Twin Earths.
