TIMELESS MUCHA The Magic of Line This volume reappraises the graphic work of Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) and explores its influence on graphic art since the 1960s. Published in conjunction with a touring exhibition to five leading museums in the US and Mexico, the book provides an opportunity to survey the development of Mucha’s style, which became synonymous with Art Nouveau. It explores how it was rediscovered by later generations of artists, becoming a new artistic idiom for the Psychedelic Art of the 1960s and 1970s as well as a wide range of visual culture from the late 20th century to today, exemplified by American comics, Japanese manga and street murals. SEEING IS BELIEVING The Art and Influence of Jean-Leon Gerome Highly Recommended. InIn the 19th century, the art of French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) offered European audiences an apparently realistic, romantic and intimate view of life in the Middle East, now termed Orientalist style. in 1978 Gérôme’s scintillating painting of a young, unclothed Arab snake charmer appeared on the cover of Edward Said’s Orientalism. This reintroduced the artist’s name to the public. The paintings and drawings by Gérôme featured in this exquisite volume, in addition to examinations of his biography, influences and historical context, present Gérôme as a product of his time, a stylistic pioneer and something of a riddle waiting to be solved. He also headed up his own Atelier or Salon, where young artists, including many major names from America, came to learn under him. Silvana Editoriale, 2025. Due: Mar....More. Diamond Comic Distributors Bankruptcy So far things are not looking too good for Diamond. They are on deadline to divest several of their companies: toys, gaming, and Diamond U.K. They are apparently looking for a buyer, a white knight as it were, to buy the comics division which we all know so well. We continue to wish them the best, the industry needs their service of consolidating and offering small and new publishers' material. Marty Grosser, the long time editor of Diamond Previews, worked for Comics & Comix and for me before he moved to Diamond in 1988. Steve Geppi has always been a good friend, since we both became comic distributors the same year, in 1982. To reassure you, our customers, we actually buy very little from Diamond. We always go direct to the publisher on everything that we can. We have relationships that go back decades with folks like Fantagraphics, Twomorrows, Flesk, Book Palace, PS Artbooks, Taschen, Abrams et al. And the big names such as Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and IDW all use book distributors like Random House or Simon and Shuster, and that is where we get all the trades, Omnibus Editions and more. A few of the smaller companies, such as Dynamite, Magnetic and Hermes still use Diamond as their exclusive distributor -- for now, Diamond is still shipping their books regularly to us. If that changes, we should be able to get them direct or from one of the book distributors above. Milton Griepp is an old friend of ours, and the former co-owner of Capital City Distribution. He runs the website icv2 and has written a very good piece on how Diamond got here (much was due to the covid interruption) and where they might go from here. "A Sad Ending to a Long Story, and a New Beginning". I strongly recommend reading it. Milton also has many more informative interviews with industry professionals. He did a several-part interview with me in 2023, about the origins of the comics market, Phil Seuling, and more, in case you haven’t seen that before. Here's a link to it.
