JOSEPHINE BAKER: The Graphic Novel
By José-Louis Bocquet. Art by Catel Muller. A massive 465-page graphic novel relates the unique life of Josephine Baker (1906–1975), just 19 years old when she found herself in Paris in 1925. Overnight, the young American dancer--who often performed topless--became the idol of the Roaring Twenties, captivating Picasso, Cocteau, Le Corbusier, and Simenon. After World War II and her time in the French Resistance, Baker devoted herself to the struggle against racial segregation, publicly battling the humiliations she had for so long suffered personally. Moderate, tasteful nudity and adult situations. Mature Readers. Self Made Hero, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

New Frazetta Statue

Limited, 550. Recommended. Grand master fantasy artist Frank Frazetta's most famous work is Death Dealer. He painted several versions of this brooding warrior--this is based on the third. The detailed hand-painted sculpture captures the mood and colors of the painting. 10 inches tall on a base strewn with the remains of vanquished foes. His chain mail is nicely detailed in silver and bronze, with some bloody highlights, his axe is encrusted with blood, his sword swings free on real chain at his side. This is the finest batch of “hurt” books we've offered. Ditko and Weird Heroes both get my Highest Recommendation, and the Simon and Kirby is Highly Recommended. These are all “new” books, but they were shipped to us in “case lots” without being double-boxed, so anytime the box was dropped or tumbled, one or two corners of the books got dented. That's what happened to these. It's never particularly bad, but we can't send these out to you as a new book. If a book has a jacket (only the Simon and Kirby has one), there may be small tears besides the dent or dents. You can put a nice Just-a-Fold acetate cover on the jacket and any flaws usually are then hidden.

See our website under the search term “hurt” for more blemished books. We current have 45 “hurt” titles available right now, all at half price or less.

News and Notes

We mailed out a special PS Artbooks New on Sale email on May 18. If you missed it, find it here on our blog. Or see our website for ALL the PS Artbooks on sale, many more than in the new sale. Search term is PSSALE.

One thing I didn't mention in the descriptions is that with the slipcased sets, PS did a cool thing. On the back of the slipcases, in the case of most of the multi-volume series, they have run special artwork so that when you put together all the slipcases side by side and in order, you get a cool picture. I've seen this done on other books, such as from the prestigious Folio society. It is a great touch, and it looks very attractive on your shelves. That said, we don't have EVERY volume in slipcase of some of these series, since this is catch as catch can when they are priced so cheap.

Here are two examples for you to check out. Sheena Volumes 1-3, which we have reasonable quantities of and Rulah 1-3, of which we only have ten copies left of Volume 2. They did the same for the Adventures Into the Unknown, Forbidden Worlds, Out of the Night, Planet Comics, and Roy Thomas Presents Frankenstein.

We thought our chance to buy these was over, but we just got a brand new list of titles. A great many are slipcased editions of books which we only handled as regular editions: Sheena, Planet Comics, Adventures into the Unknown, Forbidden Worlds, Capt. Flash, Capt. Science, Captain Video, Out of the Night, Rulah, Strange Fantasy, Web of Evil, and Weird Mysteries.

There are still plenty of regular price titles and more coming in, so PS isn't going anywhere. They just have excess inventory to clear out. Many of these titles are NOT in large supply—sometimes we bought every copy our source had and wished for more. So act accordingly, some will sell out quickly.

Closeout Price! Collects #15-17, 1954 plus 3 one-shots. Recommended. By Wally Wood, Joe Kubert, Joe Orlando, Kinstler et al. This third volume completes the run--the last three issues actually reprint Eerie #1 & #2 with Wood; and #3 by Wood, Orlando & Kubert. The bonus issues are way cool...Phantom Witch Doctor, 1952, with Everett Raymond Kinstler cover & art; Night of Mystery, 1953, with Kinstler & Hollingsworth; and Eerie Comics, 1947, the first-ever Horror Comic, with Kubert and Fujitani. Closeout Price! Collects #8-14, 1952-53. By the Iger Shop. Hey, it's all here, culture-lovers: walking dead folks (loads of ‘em)--some of them even still sporting their heads—witches, ghosts, werewolves and enough vampires to go into the second-hand dentures business. The publisher knew beautiful girls sold, so lots of tales feature nice young ladies being threatened with every sort of ghastly peril. And often it comes to be. Another wild title from Superior, one of the most extreme of the pre-code comics publishers (which makes them the most fun). PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

Closeout Price! Collects #16-22, 1954. Recommended. By Steve Ditko, Vince Alascia, Jim Aparo, Pat Boyette, George Evans et al. This one says it all: suspense stories that are strange, and that wasn't just idle talk, like, say, whacked out westerns or mad mysteries. No sir, the yarns to be had in Fawcett's and later Charlton's groundbreaking title set a new standard for weird. Considering the creative talent, it's no surprise: the incomparable Steve Ditko (multiple covers AND stories), Pat Boyette, George Evans, Joe Gill, Frank McLaughlin, Joe Shuster, and Steve Skeates. Strange Worlds Volume 2 Slipcased – another cool Avon title [STW02D. $64.99, your price $23.99]. We have less than ten copies left of the regular Volume 2 [STW02H. $59.99, your price $19.95].

The Thing Volumes 1 and 2 [PCT01H, PCT02H. $48, your price $19.95 each]. Also we have a slipcased set of both issues [PCTD. $129, your price $39.95]. We have just nine of these left.

Closeout Price! Collects #15-21, 1954. Recommended. By Shelly Moldoff, Bob Powell, Dick Giordano, Bob McCarty, Steve Ditko et al. One of my personal favorite pre-code titles. This one began under Fawcett and moved into the hands of Charlton, where young Steve Ditko was just starting out--includes multiple iconic covers AND stories by our boy. In fact, the art in general here is quite a bit better than the typical fifties fare--more in the great tradition of EC Comics and the Harvey Horror line. A dizzying array of  twisted tales of post-death revenge and retribution. Don't miss out! Collects issues #15-21, February 1954 to November 1954. PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

Closeout Price! Limited, 300. Collects #1-6, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. By Basil Wolverton, Bernard Baily et al. Key Publications/Stanley Morse was a Johnny-Come-Lately to the horror comics field. To compete with the big boys, he got even more ghastly and horrible, beginning with his first title, Mister Mystery and ratcheting up the volume right here. He gave a start to a new generation of comic artists, including Andru, Esposito, John Romita and Steve Ditko (the latter two not in this volume). But he knew enough to feature two huge and important veterans: Wolverton and Baily. PS Artbooks, 2013...More.
