The first volume of Dan Barry's stunning work from the peak of his career, aided by three EC veterans! They took the strip that had been so magnificent under Alex Raymond and made it their own, with storytelling that may have outpaced Raymond's own. Flash and the lovely Dale Arden encounter escaped convicts, frightening Frost Men, tyrannous kingdoms - and more! Three years of Dan Barry's run, and not a glimpse of Mongo. Flash is back in our universe! Titan, 2016...More.

Okay, Mac Raboy's run is up there also. Sadly his work is not in print now. Neither is Al Williamson's, and he only worked in the comics, never on the strip itself.

Berni Wrightson

First printing. Silver-Foil Embossed Cover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Steve Niles. Art by Bernie Wrightson and Kelley Jones. The exciting climax of Niles' and Wrightson's reinterpretation of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein! The first part of this was originally published as three comics in 2012-14, then collected in early 2018 into one book. This conclusion was not printed until 2018, two months after that first compilation. Niles' gothic storytelling couples perfectly with Bernie Wrightson, who drew the cover, five pages and all layouts, and Kelley Jones, who finished off the book. Our sad, misunderstood monster meets his ultimate fate! IDW, 2018...More.

Holy Smoke, "New" Wrightson!! Issues #1-3, 2012-14. Our Highest Recommendation. By Steve Niles. Art by Bernie Wrightson. I don't keep on top of all the "current" comic books--I expect the best stuff to get collected in archives, so I wait until then to pay closer attention. So this comes as a total surprise to me, having missed the short series of three issues. Here Bernie left us a wonderful new Frankenstein story, collected here for the first time! And in a bargain-priced format! A grand treat of Victorian horror featuring the further adventures of Mary Shelly's classic monster, as ghoulishly illustrated by Bernie Wrightson, the true master of the macabre! IDW, 2018...More.

Item Code: FRAL
Soft Cover, 7x10, 64pg, b&w

This raced out of here when we first announced it, but now we have plenty on hand. Since it's really a comic rather than a graphic novel, it may not remain available, so act accordingly.

Finally available in softcover! Highly Recommended. A collection so terrifying, so huge, so gritty and raw that it had to be called MONSTROUS! Collecting the collaborations between two horror legends — Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson — this Monstrous Collection includes three complete tales: Dead She Said, The Ghoul, and Doc Macabre, each a piece of the dark, dangerous universe Niles has created in the shadows... Enjoy them here, collected together for the first time in black and white. The hardcover is out of print. Brilliant work by Wrightson. IDW, 2017...More.

BERNIE WRIGHTSON Artifact Edition Cover B
Almost Gone! House of Mystery cover. Recommended. Introduction by Michael Kaluta. Bernie Wrightson began his career in the late 1960s, just barely out of his teens, and within a decade rose to prominence as the preeminent horror artist of his generation. This loving tribute to comics' Master of the Macabre showcases Wrightson's ground breaking work in the DC Comics Mystery books and his legendary artistic turn on Swamp Thing. Additionally, a number of rarely seen and completely (until now) unseen treasures have been assembled here. Six fold-outs, many pieces in full color. IDW, 2017. Out of Print....More.

Facsimile of the legendary 1909 edition. Highly Recommended. By Omar Khayyám. Art by Edmund Dulac. "A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse — and Thou, Beside me, singing in the Wilderness," is only one of the memorable verses from Edward FitzGerald's translation of poems by the 11th century Persian sage Omar Khayyám. This magnificent version of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám reproduces the edition published by Hodder & Stoughton in London in 1909, in which the timeless poems are accompanied by full-color images by Golden Age illustrator Edmund Dulac. Critics and collectors have long debated which book represents the peak of Dulac's career, and many agree that his affinity for Persian art makes this gloriously illustrated volume a strong contender. These last two books are both essentially new, original books, although they still are designed to look like the other Calla books, i.e. as if they were published back in 1905. These both use artwork published solely in the original magazine appearances of the stories, never before collected. They remain two of our most popular Calla titles, for that reason. And also because both illustrators, Goble and Rountree, are outstanding and highly respected by knowledgable creators right up to today.

CTHULHU The Ancient One Tribute Box
Recommended. By Steve Mockus. The signature character of author H. P. Lovecraft's darkly fantastic fiction, Cthulhu is as emblematic for Lovecraft's fans as Darth Vader is for Star Wars adherents. Both feared and worshipped in the stories, Cthulhu has since been the subject of new fiction, artwork, role-playing games, toys, and other items celebrating Lovecraft and fandom for weird tales. Warehouse Finds

Highly Recommended. By Zdeněk V. Spinar. Art by Zdeněk Burian. Burroughs fans were introduced to Burian's work through the early pages of ERB-dom, and ultimately in the form of a fine portfolio that publisher Cazedessus issued. Burian was adapting ERB stories in his native country of Czechoslovakia...stunning work. But he also had a long history of doing illustrations of prehistoric creatures, and three volumes of these are today highly collectible. This puts together much of his finest prehistoric art, page after page and in full color. One corner bumped causing light creasing to both covers. Thames & Hudson, 1995. . Written by noted historians of American art and based in part on newly-available family papers, it features a select group of 42 paintings, including several recently-rediscovered works, which reflect the breadth of Tarbell's artistic achievements. Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938) was renowned for his refined and distinctly New England interiors as well as vibrant outdoor paintings of his family. Meanwhile, back volumes are in VERY short supply, so check them out on our website. We have very small numbers left of 2009 (3 copies), 2012 (4 copies), 2014 Hurt (4 copies), 2015 (14 copies). We have plenty of 2016 and 2017 still on hand. All are still $30 each [MNST09, 12, 14, etc]. 2009 and 2016 come with free signed bookplates.

Land of Terror

The limited edition has gone out of print. One version sports a new cover by Bob Eggleton, the other the original John Coleman Burroughs cover. Each is limited to just 200 copies. We have just six copies of each one left.

From the same publisher but still in print, as far as I know, is Back to the Stone Age. This is a matching volume with Land of Terror; one with a new Bob Eggleton cover, the other with a John Coleman Burroughs cover. As I mention in the descriptions, The Eggleton is a stone-cold-perfect facsimile of an original Grosset and Dunlap ERB edition—though one was never done. The JCB cover is a facsimile of the ERB Inc. FIRST EDITION. Both are loaded with interior art and lots of extras.

Star Trek Continues

My buddy Dick Swan, Big Guy’s Comics, turned me onto this and I’m passing it forward. Thanks to Kickstarter and Gofundme programs, a group of actors and dedicated fans produced ELEVEN FREE EPISODES emulating the original Kirk/Spock/Uhura/Scotty Star Treks.

They are all new, they are fun, and they are all FREE on Youtube. This is NOT the new CBS series known as Discover. Check them out; if you are undecided, start with Episode 3—its my favorite, hands down, with the parallel universe BAD Kirk and the Enterprise crew. The actor playing Kirk has all his Shatner’s mannerisms down pat and even looks a bit like him. But the breakaway for me is the young Spock. He’s very, very good and gets better each episode.

Vintage Paperback Show, March 18, Glendale

I'm sorry to report that we don't be exhibiting at this show after all. A bout with the flu set me way behind last month, and something had to give. We will be at the Sacramento Book Fair March 24th, as previously announced, and on April 15th, at Sac-Con —our local comic book show. Hope to see you there.
