They took the strip that had been so magnificent under Alex Raymond and made it their own, with storytelling that may have outpaced Raymond's own. Flash and the lovely Dale Arden encounter escaped convicts, frightening Frost Men, tyrannous kingdoms - and more! Three years of Dan Barry's run, and not a glimpse of Mongo. Berni Wrightson

FRANKENSTEIN ALIVE, ALIVE! #4
First printing. Silver-Foil Embossed Cover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Steve Niles. Art by Bernie Wrightson and Kelley Jones. The exciting climax of Niles' and Wrightson's reinterpretation of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein! The first part of this was originally published as three comics in 2012-14, then collected in early 2018 into one book. This conclusion was not printed until 2018, two months after that first compilation. Niles' gothic storytelling couples perfectly with Bernie Wrightson, who drew the cover, five pages and all layouts, and Kelley Jones, who finished off the book. Our sad, misunderstood monster meets his ultimate fate! IDW, 2018...More.

These last two books are both essentially new, original books, although they still are designed to look like the other Calla books, i.e. as if they were published back in 1905. These both use artwork published solely in the original magazine appearances of the stories, never before collected. They remain two of our most popular Calla titles, for that reason. And also because both illustrators, Goble and Rountree, are outstanding and highly respected by knowledgable creators right up to today.

LIFE BEFORE MAN HURT
Highly Recommended. By Zdeněk V. Spinar. Art by Zdeněk Burian. Burroughs fans were introduced to Burian's work through the early pages of ERB-dom, and ultimately in the form of a fine portfolio that publisher Cazedessus issued. But he also had a long history of doing illustrations of prehistoric creatures, and three volumes of these are today highly collectible. This puts together much of his finest prehistoric art, page after page and in full color. One corner bumped causing light creasing to both covers. Thames & Hudson, 1995. . Rare & Out of Print

This week we sent out our Rare & Out of Print List #3, and we did some special grouping, including Berni Wrightson, Signed & Limited Portfolios, William Stout, Russ Cochran's Complete EC Librarys and the adult Glamour International magazines.

We scored a copy of the original first printing of Wrightson's A Look Back, and took $100 off the price of Frankenstein. Also just listed is the massive retrospective of Wally Wood in Woodwork, and a couple cool retailer promotions of Batman and X-Men Mutant Genesis.

News and Notes

Monsters and Dames 2018

This year’s Emerald City Comic-Con just happened, and that means we’ll have the new program book, Monsters and Dames, any time now. Watch for it in a couple, three weeks or so. Or reserve one now [MNST18H $40]. Note price has gone up $5 this year.
Meanwhile, back volumes are in VERY short supply, so check them out on our website. We have very small numbers left of 2009 (3 copies), 2012 (4 copies), 2014 Hurt (4 copies), 2015 (14 copies). We have plenty of 2016 and 2017 still on hand. All are still $30 each [MNST09, 12, 14, etc]. 2009 and 2016 come with free signed bookplates.

Land of Terror

The limited edition has gone out of print. One version sports a new cover by Bob Eggleton, the other the original John Coleman Burroughs cover. Each is limited to just 200 copies. We have just six copies of each one left.

From the same publisher but still in print, as far as I know, is Back to the Stone Age. This is a matching volume with Land of Terror; one with a new Bob Eggleton cover, the other with a John Coleman Burroughs cover. As I mention in the descriptions, The Eggleton is a stone-cold-perfect facsimile of an original Grosset and Dunlap ERB edition—though one was never done. The JCB cover is a facsimile of the ERB Inc. FIRST EDITION. Both are loaded with interior art and lots of extras.

Star Trek Continues

My buddy Dick Swan, Big Guy’s Comics, turned me onto this and I’m passing it forward. Thanks to Kickstarter and Gofundme programs, a group of actors and dedicated fans produced ELEVEN FREE EPISODES emulating the original Kirk/Spock/Uhura/Scotty Star Treks.

They are all new, they are fun, and they are all FREE on Youtube. This is NOT the new CBS series known as Discover. Check them out; if you are undecided, start with Episode 3—its my favorite, hands down, with the parallel universe BAD Kirk and the Enterprise crew. The actor playing Kirk has all his Shatner’s mannerisms down pat and even looks a bit like him. But the breakaway for me is the young Spock. He’s very, very good and gets better each episode.

Vintage Paperback Show, March 18, Glendale

I'm sorry to report that we don't be exhibiting at this show after all. A bout with the flu set me way behind last month, and something had to give. We will be at the Sacramento Book Fair March 24th, as previously announced, and on April 15th, at Sac-Con —our local comic book show. Hope to see you there.

~Bud
