We have a new Vault of Horror Archive, a new book continuing ERB's The Moon Men, and Del Toro's Trollhunters. Also new pre-code horror comics coverage in It Crept from the Tomb, Johnny Hazard, a new Crumb Sketchbook and a new Bettie Page set.

Highly Recommended. Art by Harold W. McCauley and Jes Schlaikjer. This issue of Illustration features the sexy pin-up and science fiction art of the brilliant H.W. McCauley, who is as relatively unknown, except among hardcore pulp art collectors, as he is brilliant. He is an usung master illustrator. This cover feature showcases numerous examples of his original art, printed covers, and rare, previously unpublished photographs. Lots of sexy sci-fi ladies, as he was also a master of the pin-up image. Next up are the automotive illustrations of Peter Helck, known for his thrilling racing art. And we discover the work of Gilbert Bundy, famous for his humorous slick magazine illustrations of the 30s and 40s. Illustrated Press, 2018...More.

ART OF THE PULPS An Illustrated History
Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Doug Ellis, Ed Hulse and Robert Weinberg. Illustrated with more than 400 examples of the best pulp covers and graphics. Plus two special chapters: David Saunders on artists Norman Saunders and Walter Baumhofer and Ed Hulse looks at H.P. McCauley's work is also examined, in brief, in this highly recommended book.  Many of his original covers are reproduced from the printed versions or from original art. See our website for all available back issues of Illustration Magazine. The last issue, #58, on James Montgomery Flagg, was one of the most popular issues since the issue with Virgil Finlay, which is sold out.

Our Highest Recommendation. By Archie Goodwin, Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, Alex Toth et al. These stories are among the best comics stories about war ever published. Written and edited by Hall of Famer Archie Goodwin, and drawn by fellow comic book Hall of Famers Frank Frazetta, Wallace Wood, John Severin, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Gene Colan. Building on the tradition of Harvey Kurtzman's much-lauded EC titles, Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, Goodwin's stories offer striking personal insights into the minds and emotions of individual soldiers and civilians. Covering wars from ancient times through Vietnam, Blazing Combat, unlike much of the popular media of the time, underscored the very madness of war itself in starkly personal terms. The very first SIX issues of the legendary EC title that wrote the book on divergent, intelligent, even anti-war comic book stories! EC ARCHIVES Two-Fisted Tales Volume 3
Collects #30-35. Our Highest Recommendation. By Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, Wally Wood et al. Foreword by Joe Kubert. Before Two-Fisted Tales burst onto the scene in 1950, war comics were largely unsophisticated, focusing only on action and adventure/wartime propaganda. But under the editorial direction of Harvey Kurtzman--who also penned the majority of the stories therein--Two-Fisted Tales dared to examine all the horror and madness of war, from ancient times to the Civil War to WWI, WWII and Korea. And by a who's who of artists. Dark Horse, 2014...More.

R. Crumb Sketchbooks

R. CRUMB THE SKETCHBOOK Volume 3 1975-1982
By Robert Crumb. Until May 2017, Robert Crumb was simply lauded as the greatest underground artist. Then his cover drawing for the 1969 comic Fritz the Cat sold for a record $717,000, the highest price ever realized for any Crumb original art, and concepts of under- and aboveground went out the window. Now everything Crumb is fast increasing in value; the perfect time for R. Crumb Sketchbook, Volume 3: Jan. 1975–Dec. 1982. Combining volumes 5 and 6 from the $1000 second R. Crumb Sketchbook boxed set, and produced directly from the original artworks now belonging to an ardent French collector, this is one big 444-page Crumb feast. Taschen, 2018. Adult Material...More.

R. CRUMB THE SKETCHBOOK Volume 1 1964-1968

When Taschen released the first limited edition of Crumb Sketchbooks 1982–2011, fans drooled over the gorgeous packaging of this six-volume boxed set, the artist's thoughtful editing, the hand-written introduction, and signed art print. But not everyone could afford the $1000 price. Demand increased when the second boxed set, 1964–1982, was released. This combines the two earliest volumes from the first limited edition, direct from the original artwork, into one fat 440-page Crumb feast, for an irresistible price. Coming in June

Dailies & Sundays, 1967-69. Recommended. By Chester Gould.Chester Gould's morality play enters the late '60s, as the cartoonist tackles concepts of retribution, constitutional rights, economic warfare, and Space Age intrigue--all amidst the usual array of murder and violence. The stakes, however, seem higher, and the body count soars: death in space, on the high seas, behind closed doors--by gun, by laser, by asphyxiation, by explosion, and by freezing. The action moves from Earth to the lunar surface as Moon Maid zaps bad guys, Lizz goes undercover, Tracy nearly loses his head--and, when Diet Smith sets up a factory on the moon, will mankind also export greed and murder to its crime-free orbiting satellite? Warehouse Finds

Warehouse find, 1995. Limited, 1500. Etching, Illustration, Reproductive Engraving, & Photography in England In And Around The 1860s. Recommended. The first purpose of the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue were to demonstrate to an American audience the beauty and interest of British prints from the decade of the 1860s and the PRB Brotherhood who took art and design in new directions. Engraving, illustration, etching, and photography each flourished in the period, and each has been studied, collected, and exhibited in strict isolation from the other three, as if the others, for all intents and purposes, did not exist. This catalogue features and discusses instead, where they are related and what distinguishes them: their technical possibilities, economic underpinnings, traditions, and audiences. Some of the many artists in this collection include Dante Gabriel  Rossetti, John Everett Millais, Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Walter Crane, Paul Tabor, John Tenniel
and James McNeill Whistler. Wallach Art Gallery. . Note: Copies may have slightly soiled covers and my have bumped corners....More.

News and Notes

Star Hawks

Today on Comic Book I read a good review written by Scott VanderPloeg on the latest Star Hawks collections by Ron Goulart, Gil Kane and Howard Chaykin. Here is an excerpt you might enjoy:

"Another rollicking action adventure volume, following our fearless heroes Rex and Chavez as they wade their way through the scum and villainy of the universe. Stories continue to focus on perilous missions in exotic locations, but Goulart has the wherewithal to work in fun and romance whenever possible.
It's the essence of the strip and keeps the reader coming back. The final story arc is written by Goodwin who immediately builds Rex's backstory and origin, taking a sharp turn from the strip's existing rhythm. But it works.

The fill in art can be striking in its difference, especially Chaykin's work. It's great, classic Chaykin, but there's no mistaking it for Kane.

For the most part text is clear and has been cleaned up; a few strips were missed but overall it's a great reading experience. Production is outstanding, with a heavy matte paper stock, silk ribbon, and no dust jacket."

The series will be complete in three books. We have the first two in stock; Volume two just came out in December.

In our Rare and Out of Print books, there is one copy of The Complete Star Hawks Deluxe, an all-in-one volume published in 2003 by Hermes. It's signed by author Ron Goulart and numbered from 1,000 copies. I just reduced the price from $150 to $125.
