THE TEMPLE OF SILENCE Forgotten Works & World of Herbert Crowley
Recommended. Edited by Justin Duerr and Josh O'Neill. A monograph on the forgotten visionary artist Herbert Crowley (1873 – 1937), a British artist, set designer, and comic strip cartoonist. He exhibited in the Armory Show alongside Picasso, was published in the New York Herald alongside Winsor McCay--and mysteriously vanished. Crowley was an innovator at the dawn of comics, and a defining figure of the early 20th century avant-garde. His newspaper strip The Wigglemuch was printed next to Little Nemo in the New York Herald. He had a close relationship with Carl Jung, and was a noted mainstay of the burgeoning NYC experimental art scene. And yet he's been essentially erased from history. Beehive, 2019...More.

SOROLLA Spanish Master of Light
Recommended. By Gabriele Finaldi, Javier Barón Thaidigsmann et al. Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923) was the leading Spanish painter of his day, world-famous when Picasso was still struggling. This sumptuously illustrated book traces Sorolla's career at home and abroad, focusing on more than 60 canvases: portraits, landscapes, bathers and seascapes for which he is most famous. His monumental early works established the artist's reputation as an unflinching social realist, depicting peasants, fishermen, prostitutes and sail-makers. Rarely had Impressionist technique been turned to such provocative ends. He found a wealthy clientele toward the turn of the century, and his focus turned to sun-drenched scenes of leisure and elegant sociability: beautiful women stroll in fashionable resorts and children gambol on the seashore. For ten years, from October 1970 when Roy and artist Barry Smith assembled the first issue of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian, to October 1980 when Roy and artist John Buscema completed their last issue together on the series, Thomas wrote of Conan's gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth—as well as the wars, the wenches, and the wizardry that bedeviled the Cimmerian from one issue to the next. COMIC SHOP The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us A New Geek Culture Signed
Signed, dated and briefly inscribed by Bud! Highly Recommended. By Dan Gearino. Dan interviewed me twice, once in person, and we continued to work together to get facts right and questions resolved. I was a partner in one of the earliest comic book stores (1968). In 1972, I co-founded what may be the first chain of comic stores (Comics and Comix), and I was one of the earliest mail order retailers, beginning the business that you see now back in 1970. On the distribution side, I began wholesaling comics-related material to stores before Phil Seuling created the Direct Market. Phil and I often would take entire print runs from publishers (Squa Tront, Elfquest, Comics Journal) to make them viable, and we'd distribute them to comic shops, before any other distributors existed. Mature Readers

We have a very unusual new high-end hardcover graphic novel, erotic and surreal, superbly drawn, Bezimena by Serbian/Canadian artist Nina Bunjevac, who wrote and illustrated Fatherland and Heartless.

The inspiration for this story is the myth of Artemis and Siproites, in which a young man is turned into a woman as a punishment for the attempted rape of one of Artemis' virgin cohorts. Bunjevac's retelling follows a selfish young priestess, who is reborn as a boy. He grows up captivated by one particular young woman. As an adult Benny comes across this former unrequited love...does he concoct a disturbing sex fantasy which he fulfulls, or has he been seduced by her and her two lovely companions? In her stippled, highly detailed illustrative style, Bunjevac crafts a gripping noirish, Nabokovian tale—sensual and disturbing.

JACK LAKE CLASSICS #164 The Cossack Chief
Recommended. By Nikolai Gogol. Art by Sidney Miller. Originally published by the Gilberton Company in 1961 under the Classics Illustrated banner, this 48-page graphic novel has been quite handsomely remastered. Although the artist is new to us, the work is solid and modern, rather than the sometimes dated 1940s work. This is about Taras Bulba, the handsome and daring Cossack chief who led his people against the invading Mongols. Gogol biography, article by Guy de Maupassant and Stephen Crane as well as a 5-page history of Egyptian Pharoah Thutmosis III. Jack Lake, 2011...More.

Comics & Graphic Novels

Highly Recommended. By Christophe Bec, Alcante et al. Art by Aleksa Gajic, Jaquen, Fafner et al. A prelude to the highly recommended Carthago graphic novel, about the discovery of a modern day Megladon, the killing machine ancestor of the great white shark. These five individual, but interlinked, stories see our Carthago characters Donovan and billionaire Feiersinger combating all manner of malicious myths and monsters from the Californian Bigfoot and deadly African dinosaurs to Arctic sea creatures and giant Canadian wolves. Whether driven by a taste for adventure, a passion for scientific curiosity, or simply by pure obsession, join our unrelenting heroes as they chase and encounter creatures that are as mythical as they are deadly. Highly Recommended. By Christophe Bec. Art by Eric Henninot and Milan Jovanovic. A complex and highly entertaining story, collected all in one from a series of six French graphic novels. We found this a page-turner, with good characters we want to know more about, a large cast of them, and intertwining stories that start years ago and come together in the present day. It starts out about a megalodon, the prehistoric ancestor of the great white shark that was the most ferocious predator of the seas, an 80 foot killing machine long extinct. But when divers drilling in an underwater cave are attacked by this living fossil, oceanographer Kim Melville discovers that this creature may not only have survived, but thrived, and is reclaiming its place at the top of the food chain. Humanoids, 2018...More.

SIX DAYS The Incredible Story of D-Days Lost Chapter
Highly Recommended. By Robert Venditti and Kevin Maurer. Art by Andrea Mutti. June 1944. World War II. D-Day. 182 members of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division parachute into the French countryside--a full eighteen miles southeast of their intended target. An original graphic novel from DC/Vertigo, the true story of a World War II battle that took place in the small village of Graignes, France for six days and the people survived to tell the tale, and those who didn't. The author's uncle was in the battle, so this is a personal, intimate look at the unit parachuting in, digging in, getting food and aid from the French townspeople, and the eventual battle against overwhelming odds, since they were far behind German lines. Recommended. By Gareth Hinds. Three thousand years ago, two armies faced each other and rewrote history in the Trojan War. The Iliad, Homer's legendary account of this nine-year ordeal, is considered the greatest war story of all time and one of the most important works of Western literature. This graphic novel adaptation has been thoroughly researched and Gareth Hinds takes you directly to the plains of Troy, into the battle itself, and lays bare the complex emotions of the men, women, and gods whose struggles fueled the war and determined its outcome. This stunning children's (and all-ages) version of The Iliad by the award-winning Rosemary Sutcliff and Alan Lee was first published in 1993 and is being republished now in a beautiful new edition. Its rich illustration will look familiar to Lord of the Rings fans, as Lee was the conceptual artist for the amazing Peter Jackson films. Featuring the stories of heroes Ajax, Achilles and Penthesilea (the Amazon Queen), this is high adventure at its best, with full color paintings on nearly every page. Wrap-around cover. Collects #2-7, 1954-56. Highly Recommended. Art by George Woodbridge, Angelo Torres, A.C. Hollingsworth, Hy Fleishman, et al. We have a real sleeper here. George Woodbridge was a brilliant artist but wasn't in comics long enough to be well-recognized today. Here he does three covers and a story, collaborating with Angelo Torres on the cover and story in #3--it looks like Frazetta drew it. From here he went on to a 44-year career with Mad Magazine, beginning in 1957. The first issue of this was Horror from the Tomb.
