My favorite book this week is a deluxe new edition of The Island of Doctor Moreau, illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz. We have several new books from another new publisher, The Men's Adventure Library, leading off with The Art of Samson Pollen. I enjoyed reading Pirate Queen: The Legend of Grace O'Malley. It was nothing like I imagined it would be. Hellboy now has his own playing cards. Norman Rockwell's well-written autobiography is back in print. And we have a mess of coming items, foremost among them and by far my personal favorite: Mac Raboy: Master of the Comics by Roger Hill. |

THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU Illuminated Editions Oversized limited edition in deluxe slipcase. Our Highest Recommendation. By H.G. Wells. Art by Bill Sienkiewicz. Introduction by Guillermo Del Toro. The "gleefully blasphemous" classic of sci-fi horror. Human chimeras and deranged scientific curiosity come to nightmarish life through the brushwork of Bill Sienkiewicz in powerful, full page, full color illustrations. An exceptionally handsome edition from beginning to end, with the highest production values and the finest design by Maëlle Doliveux. Introduction by filmmaker and storyteller Guillermo Del Toro. Item Code: ISLAH Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x12, 148pg $100.00 |
This is from a publisher new to us, Beehive Books, who we are quite excited about. If you read the full description of this, I include information on three more of their books. The first is about Herbert Crowley: British artist, set designer, and comic strip artist of The Wigglemuch, a symbolic strip from 1910 that ran opposite Little Nemo! It is on the way to us. Temple of Silence: Forgotten Works and Worlds of Herbert Crowley [$125.00. TEMPH] Finally, this same publisher has announced a wonderful new book Madness in Crowds: The Teeming Art of Harrison Cady by Denis Kitchen. It looks to be a gorgeous edition. I have talked to Denis about it and even contributed a couple pieces of artwork to it. We will have full details soon on how to order the regular and possibly a deluxe limited edition. |

Wells, this graphic novel adaptation, translated from the French album, brings a whole new look to the disturbing and visionary tale. Set adrift in the Pacific Ocean, Edward Prendick is rescued only to find himself on the strange remote island of Dr. Moreau. Moreau has been conducting bizarre experiments for years, genetically modifying animals to give them each a conscience and the ability to speak. These “Beastmen” obey a very precise set of rules called The Law, which forbids them to exhibit any primitive behavior and commands that they worship Dr. Moreau like a god. NORMAN ROCKWELL My Adventures as an Illustrator The Definitive Edition Highly Recommended. By Tom Rockwell. Art by Norman Rockwell. Edited by Abigail Rockwell. The wit, humanity, and many-sided talent of Norman Rockwell (1894–1978) are on full display in his classic and profusely illustrated autobiography. Rockwell's New York City boyhood, his apprentice days at the Art Students League, his first fateful visit to the Saturday Evening Post, his adventures abroad, his move to rural Vermont, judging the 1922 Miss America pageant with fellow artists—all are recounted with a mix of sharp observation and self-deprecating humor. Throughout Rockwell invites the reader into his artistic process: he introduces his favorite models, candidly reveals his biggest flops, and documents the creation of a Post cover step by step. From 1941 to 1949, Stoll Karn's art appeared on the covers and pages of many Popular Publication magazines, including Black Mask, Dime Mystery, Detective Tales, New Detective, All-Story Love, New Love et al. Includes a special six-page section of great cover repros, celebrating the wide range of pulp art from other creators. Superlative reproduction. Norman Rockwell Museum, 2018...More. BEAUTY AS DUTY Textiles on the Homefront in WWII Britain Warehouse find, 2011. Only four copies available. The British experience during and after WWII was quite different from that of Americans. From the fall of 1940 through the spring of 1941, Britain was subjected to relentless bombing in a terror campaign known as the Blitz. Even after the Allied victory, Britain continued to suffer shortages of everyday supplies, and rationing of both food and clothing continued. This book accompanied the 2011 exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It looks at ways that textiles were put into service on Britain's Home Front in the 1940s. Mass-produced “utility” clothes had to conform to strict government regulations, yet managed to be fashionable. Colorful scarves printed with motifs relating to British life during and after the War—many by the high-end London textile firm Jacqmar—were a practical way to spruce up a look. Utility dresses and propaganda scarves showed how fashion could be used as a powerful weapon to maintain morale in challenging and austere times. Huff Scharf, 2011. . As New....More. We did a special early mailing April 30th with a list of both new and vintage comics. You can see the complete email here, and see the comics on our website, here. You HAVE to place an order for at least one PAID item to add free comics to it. Any size order gets you 3 of your choice, over $25 order nets 4, over $50 gets 6. Limit of one copy per item per order, but you can order again and get a second copy that way. My thanks to Sergio Aragones for his generous permission to use his cool FCBD artwork on our email.

More Coming Items We're going to make a point to feature more Coming Items, even if they are a long way off, in our weekly emails. It gives you the opportunity to reserve an item and lock it in. Several items lately have sold out far too quickly. It also helps us to bring in enough copies to make everyone happy. I compare the new Mac Raboy book, above, with The Art of Reed Crandall, which was gone in mere weeks. The recent Sanjulian book was gone over one weekend. The Complete Skymasters Sundays was gone shortly after publication. Customers who had reserved copies got them, but there were few or no copies left after filling backorders. |
As always, use a credit card and you will not be charged until the book has shipped from us to you. Only customers paying by check need to pay in advance.
