THE TEMPLE OF SILENCE Forgotten Works & World of Herbert Crowley
Recommended. Edited by Justin Duerr and Josh O'Neill. A monograph on the forgotten visionary artist Herbert Crowley (1873 – 1937), a British artist, set designer, and comic strip cartoonist. He exhibited in the Armory Show alongside Picasso, was published in the New York Herald alongside Winsor McCay--and mysteriously vanished. Crowley was an innovator at the dawn of comics, and a defining figure of the early 20th century avant-garde. His newspaper strip The Wigglemuch was printed next to Little Nemo in the New York Herald. He had a close relationship with Carl Jung, and was a noted mainstay of the burgeoning NYC experimental art scene. And yet he's been essentially erased from history. Beehive, 2019...More.

SOROLLA Spanish Master of Light
Recommended. By Gabriele Finaldi, Javier BarĂ³n Thaidigsmann et al. Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923) was the leading Spanish painter of his day, world-famous when Picasso was still struggling. This sumptuously illustrated book traces Sorolla's career at home and abroad, focusing on more than 60 canvases: portraits, landscapes, bathers and seascapes for which he is most famous. His monumental early works established the artist's reputation as an unflinching social realist, depicting peasants, fishermen, prostitutes and sail-makers. Rarely had Impressionist technique been turned to such provocative ends. He found a wealthy clientele toward the turn of the century, and his focus turned to sun-drenched scenes of leisure and elegant sociability: beautiful women stroll in fashionable resorts and children gambol on the seashore. COMIC SHOP The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us A New Geek Culture Signed
Signed, dated and briefly inscribed by Bud! Highly Recommended. By Dan Gearino. Dan interviewed me twice, once in person, and we continued to work together to get facts right and questions resolved. I was a partner in one of the earliest comic book stores (1968). In 1972, I co-founded what may be the first chain of comic stores (Comics and Comix), and I was one of the earliest mail order retailers, beginning the business that you see now back in 1970. On the distribution side, I began wholesaling comics-related material to stores before Phil Seuling created the Direct Market. Phil and I often would take entire print runs from publishers (Squa Tront, Elfquest, Comics Journal) to make them viable, and we'd distribute them to comic shops, before any other distributors existed. Mature Readers

We have a very unusual new high-end hardcover graphic novel, erotic and surreal, superbly drawn, Bezimena by Serbian/Canadian artist Nina Bunjevac, who wrote and illustrated Fatherland and Heartless.

The inspiration for this story is the myth of Artemis and Siproites, in which a young man is turned into a woman as a punishment for the attempted rape of one of Artemis' virgin cohorts. Bunjevac's retelling follows a selfish young priestess, who is reborn as a boy. He grows up captivated by one particular young woman. As an adult Benny comes across this former unrequited love...does he concoct a disturbing sex fantasy which he fulfulls, or has he been seduced by her and her two lovely companions? In her stippled, highly detailed illustrative style, Bunjevac crafts a gripping noirish, Nabokovian tale—sensual and disturbing.
