Three New Moebius Collections

LE MAJOR
Expanded edition. Limited, 3000. In French. Recommended. By Moebius. Originally published as a limited edition of 1000 copies in 2011. Now larger with 24 additional pages, and eleven illustrations in full color. Le Major is the fourth and final book of the Major Fatal saga and one of the last published works by Moebius. Here we find a pair of desert dwellers, deep in conversation, postulating grand philosophical and theological questions to a monolithic adobe structure which curiously houses Major Grubert inside. Both graphic novel with dialogue in French, and wordless story. Moebius Productions, 2019...More.

LA FAUNE DE MARS
Expanded, limited edition, 3000. Highly Recommended. By Moebius. Moebius at his best, creating Martian monsters and landscapes, insane and astonishing. Interview and brief captions in French only. First published in 2011 in a limited edition, now larger size and with sixteen new pages in full color. Moebius speaks: "Everyone knows by now that Mars is sterile. Yet still we send at great cost robots equipped with small shovels that stubbornly dig remote arid soil in the hope of finding huddled fossils of ancient bacteria. I found it easier and less costly in terms of technology investment to get hold of a blank book and leave the pen running over the paper at random as if in a dream." Moebius Productions, 2019...More.

FIGURE FABRIC FANTASY Five Decades of American Fashion Drawing
Warehouse find, 2012. Very few available. By Alexandra B. Huff, Frederic A. Scharf. This show in 2012 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, featured 50 drawings by 26 artists, dating from the 1940s through the 1980s. Each section of the exhibition book is organized roughly chronologically, allowing us to see how styles changed over time—not only the clothing itself, but artists' dynamic interpretations of it. Images of fashion exploded in the 20th century with the proliferation of ready-to-wear and glossy fashion magazines. As photography gradually became the medium of choice for fashion advertising, artists who worked by hand began to emphasize interpretation and impression over pure likeness. The combination was pure magic. During the course of 40 issues, all collected here, Lee and Ditko built the foundation for 45 years of Spidey: girl trouble; bill trouble; bully trouble; the Daily Bugle; and a cast friends, family and super-villains unlike any other! These are from a publisher new to us, Beehive Books, who we are quite excited about. Last week we received The Island of Doctor Moreau [ISLAH. $100], illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz. It matches the two coming editions, all from the same designer.

Expected here in the next week or so is another Beehive Book about Herbert Crowley: British artist, set designer, and comic strip artist of The Wigglemuch, a symbolic strip from 1910 that ran opposite Little Nemo! Temple of Silence: Forgotten Works and Worlds of Herbert Crowley [$125.00. TEMPH]. Full details when it arrives, but you can reserve a copy now.

Finally, this same publisher has announced a wonderful new book Madness in Crowds: The Teeming Mind of Harrison Cady [MADNH. $125.00] by Denis Kitchen, due in August. It looks to be a gorgeous edition. I have talked to Denis about it and even contributed a couple pieces of artwork to it. We will have full details soon, but you can order it now on the website. There is a deluxe edition ($275.00) but it is nearly sold out and we cannot get copies.

GOTHIC BLIMP WORKS NO.4
By Michael Kaluta, Spain, Kietch et al. This tabloid newspaper was a rare meeting of underground and regular comics (if young and aspiring) artists. It lasted just eight issues and today they are rare, due to the odd size (even folded, they were larger than a typical comic) and printed on newsprint.  Edited by Kim Deitch, with mostly one-page strips by Jay Lynch (Nard n Pat), Wally Wood assistants Larry Hama and Ralph ReeseS. Clay Wilson (two pages), Mike Kaluta ("Star Child"), Deitch (2-page "Deja Voo"), Roger Brand, Vaughn Bode (Cheech Wizard), and Trina Robbins (Panthea). Cover by Spain, back cover is Harrrison Cady's "The Road to Hell." Poor to Fair: complete but for a 1"x2" piece out of the cover, but spine is really tattered, almost split (these were never stapled), all page edges frayed and torn. Mature Readers.

Edited by Donald Wollheim--who every sci-fi fan knows as a famous editor and founder of DAW Books. He would have been 21 or 22 years old when he published this, in probably an extemely small printing. Very Good/very good minus.
