Omar Rayyan Goblin Market, Wonder Woman’s Greatest Battles, Adventures Into the Unknown, Weird Terror 2, Neil Gaiman, Moby Dick

Goblin Market by Omar Rayyan gets my Highest Recommendation this week. I think it's just so beautifully done. Also here is Wonder Woman's Greatest Battles, a new Adventures Into the Unknown collection, Weird Terror Volume 2...We've also got a new Neil Gaiman tongue-in-cheek gothic thriller, a powerful new Moby Dick graphic novel, a new Silly Symphonies Sundays collection, Frazetta Pint Glasses, 100 Manga Artists, and a new signed Cavewoman Convention Sketchbook. Not bad for a quiet week in February.

GOBLIN MARKET Signed
Over 100 drawings and water color paintings. Signed! Our Highest Recommendation. One of our favorite artists illustrates one of our favorite fantasy tales, the 19th century narrative poem written by Christina Rossetti, sister of PRB artist D.G. Rossetti. Over 100 drawings and watercolor paintings are packed into an 88-page full color book, an oversized 10x12 inch hardcover with a printed dust jacket and an introduction written by the one and only Charles Vess. This is mind-bogglingly good. Rayyan has pulled out each and every stop and gone way beyond mere illustration. This is a masterpiece, and I think the finest work I've ever seen from him. GOBLIN MARKET Deluxe Signed
Signed with finely drawn pencil illustration! Our Highest Recommendation. Illustrator Ruth Sanderson planted the idea in Rayyan's head when he was searching for a personal project to work on outside of his regular commercial work! This became Rayyan's chance to flex his artistic muscles. This project of doing an illustrated version of "Goblin Market" came about while chatting with a few fellow artists at a dinner. He used it as an opportunity to explore the imagery found in Rossetti's poem, unfettered by conventional publishing concerns. Free from the vision of an outside party such as an art director, this was a highly personal project. Omar, 2017...More.

$85.00

I really, really like this book. Rayyan has created a masterpiece that will be considered one of the finest versions of this story ever—and that includes Arthur Rackham's vision. He's signed both the deluxe and the regular edition, so while copies last, you get this extra value.

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 11
Collects #58-64, 1954-55 Highly Recommended. Art by Harry Lazarus, Kenneth Landau, Edmund Good, Bob Forgione et al. If anything, the comic code resulted in even better stories in this ACG title. Richard Hughes began doing many more science fiction stories, and often nice long tales that could run 10-12 pages in length. Meanwhile, artists Harry Lazarus and Kenneth Landau, today almost forgotten, were delivering highly detailed, well-drawn stories with much in common with early Al Williamson/Roy Krenkel work! Also includes two very wild "3-D Effect" issues, in full color and requiring no glasses. Now among the most highly prized issues. PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEIRD TERROR Volume 2
Collects #8-13, 1953-54. Recommended. By Don Heck, Rudy Palais, Marty Elkin, Bill Discount et al. From an offbeat publisher and highlighted by iconic Don Heck covers which are now highly collectible. Wild and crazed stories of walking dead folks (loads of 'em)--some of them even still sporting their heads--witches, ghosts, werewolves and enough vampires to go into the second-hand dentures business. Rudy Palais delivers some wonderfully outré stories of evil femme fatales, and there's even a cool Atom-Bomb story, "Day of Doom." Hey, it's all here, culture-lovers: walking dead folks (loads of ‘em)--some of them even still sporting their heads—witches, ghosts, werewolves and enough vampires to go into the second-hand dentures business. Another oddball pre-code horror title, this time from tiny publisher Comic Media, who recognized the talent of Don Heck and used him for many of their best covers (and stories). They also published Danger, Horrific and Terrific, all titles well known for their extreme violence, over-the-top horror, pretty girls and more. PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

FORBIDDEN BRIDES OF THE FACELESS SLAVES IN THE SECRET HOUSE OF THE NIGHT OF THE DREAD DESIRE
Recommended. By Neil Gaiman. Art by Shane Oakley and Nick Filard A celebrated send-up of gothic literature, beautifully adapted into a dark, brooding, and oddly comical graphic novel. Somewhere in the night, a raven caws, an author's pen scratches, and thunder claps. The author wants to write fiction: stories about frail women in white nightgowns, mysterious bumps in the night, and the undead rising to collect old debts. But he keeps getting interrupted by the everyday annoyances of talking ravens, duels to the death, and his sinister butler. Dark Horse, 2017...More.

MOBY DICK Chabouté
Recommended. By Christophe Chabouté. A masterful adaptation of the timeless literary classic, faithfully and beautifully rendered by an award-winning artist. In striking black-and-white illustrations, Chabouté retells the story of the Great American Novel. Captain Ahab strikes out on a voyage, obsessively seeking revenge on the great white whale that took his leg. This hardcover edition collects both of the Vents d'Ouest volumes, printed in English for the first time. Wordless at times, this is powerful work. Foreword by John Arcudi. Dark Horse, 2017...More.

LYND WARD Six Novels in Woodcuts
Two Volumes in Slipcase. Highly Recommended. From the eve of the Great Depression to the start of World War II, Lynd Ward (1905-1985) observed the troubled American scene through the double lens of a politically committed storyteller and a visionary graphic artist. His medium--the wordless "novel in woodcuts"--was his alone, and he quickly brought it from bold iconographic infancy to subtle and still unrivalled mastery. Library of America, 2010...More.

In 139 captionless woodblock prints it tells the Faustian story of an artist who signs away his soul for a magic paintbrush. Gods' Man was the first American wordless novel, and is seen as a precursor of, and influence on, the development of the graphic novel. Each image moves the story forward by an interval Ward chooses to maintain story flow. Centipede, 2015...More.

News and Notes

Thomas Haller Buchanan is the artist whose book we were so jazzed to bring in last summer—Faces Figures Fantasies: The Art of Thomas Haller Buchanan. It is still available from us, even the super-limited deluxe edition. It gets my highest recommendation.

Thomas is working on an entirely new project: The Magic Rite of Drawing, which showcases concept and character studies from 40 years of projects and sharing art techniques and ideas. It has 20 days to go on Kickstarter (so it closes around February 28th). He needs just $1000 more to reach his goal, so check it out. We would like to handle the book if it comes to fruition...but in the meantime, if you’d like one direct from the artist, and with all those cool Kickstarter extras, I encourage you to check it out and support him.

The “Blemished Books” and warehouse special we started two weeks ago has already sold out several titles. Wally Wood Thunder Agents is gone. We have a new list above and once again, we only have a handful of each book listed. We’ll also have several more new titles next week.

The two Matania books are back in stock in case you tried ordering them recently. Great books, but I’m still amazed since the artist is a virtual unknown to most of my audience. Maybe this helps disprove the accepted wisdom to avoid doing art books on artists not already well known!

2016 Bestsellers -Highlights were in the last catalog, and my intention was to send you a longer version as a special email. With all that is going on with our server issues, I thought it best to let this one project slide this year. Laurie, who makes much of this happen, is up to her eyeballs dealing with the IT work of bringing up our new systems, so that’s our focus for now.

We did just mail out our 2017 Calendar Clearance, this time with each and every calendar now at half price...they started moving out right away, so check this out if you want to score one for use this year. Click here for 2016 and older calendars as low as $2.99!
