Sunday Pages, 1971-72. Highly Recommended. By Hal Foster. Here are Hal Foster's final pages leading up to his magnificent final page, #1769 to 1788; then we begin John Cullen Murphy's pages drawn from Foster's rough pencils. Also includes "Memories of Hal and Jack" by Brian Walker, and a bonus 13 pages of rare specialty Val artwork by Foster. In Camelot, the troubled Zanedon reveals himself to be a runaway groom as the mischievous twins, Karen and Valeta, hide him in their stable. Prince Arn quenches a coup, Val ends a tyrant's reign with tough love, and Val must win back the queen of (his) heart, Aleta, when a poet with a wandering eye makes the Misty Isles his playground. PRINCE VALIANT 1-3 Slipcase Set
1937-42. Our Highest Recommendation. By Hal Foster. Hal Foster's Prince Valiant is one of the most magnificent adventure comics ever and Fantagraphics' reprinting, from rare original syndicate proofs, is today the finest treatment of the strip in the history of publishing. Despite being one of their most popular series, they never produced a holiday gift box set--until now. This deluxe package includes the first three volumes of the series, collecting the first six years of Foster's run, from 1937 through 1942, enclosed in a stunningly illustrated slipcase with different illustrations front and back. We're expecting the second slipcased collection, with Volumes 4-6, any day now [PVS02P. $99.99, your price $84.99].

Highly Recommended. Edited by Ronald Bronstein and Sammy Harkham. For more than 40 years, R. Crumb has documented his nightly dreams in a meticulously kept, written journal. This stood as a guarded secret, strangely enough, while Crumb has never lacked a compulsion to write about the rest of his his comics. All of his well-documented preoccupations are present—rampant egomania, insatiable lust, profound self-disgust, the sad beauty of old America, the moral bankruptcy of new America and the fool's errand quest for spiritual enlightenment. Here they are, entirely untamed, springing forth from forces beyond even his control--his own sub-conscious. All published for the first time. Lightly illustrated. Elara Press, 2018...More.

Graphic Novels

Newly translated from the French album. Highly Recommended. A delightful period piece about a feisty young poetess whose fiancé has disappeared on an expedition to the Arctic. She's lovely, etheral, independent, confident and naive. It's been fourteen months and now Emma Wildford is going to track him down herself, with the aid of a single Lapland guide--a Cambridge-educated Englishman who loves the land and is as philisophical as Emma is. I really enjoyed this, it has surprising twists and turns--including a mythological "bringer of fire" on a lost island. Minor nudity. Brilliant art and story. Titan, 2017...More.

Item Code: EMMAH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 8x11, 104pg, Full Color
$24.99 $21.99

I really enjoyed this. If you have been checking out the recent French albums like this and enjoying any of them as much as I am, don't miss The Reprieve, Flight of the Raven, Luisa Now and Then, Carthago, Downward to the Earth and just out, the adult Djinn, which I gave my highest recommendation.

ENOLA HOLMES The Case of the Missing Marquess
Sherlock Holmes' Younger Sister! Recommended. By Serena Blasco. With Sherlock and Mycroft off in London, their younger sister Enola has been raised by her mother on the family's country manor. But Enola wakes on her 14th birthday to discover that her mother has disappeared, leaving only a collection of flowers and a coded message book. With Sherlock and Mycroft determined to ship her off to a boarding school, Enola escapes, displaying a cleverness that even impresses the elder Holmes. But nothing prepares her for what lies ahead. An all-ages tale that's light and fun, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next installment. IDW, 2018...More.

LITTLE NEMO The Master Series Print Set
Initialled by the colorist and numbered from 1500. Sunday pages from 1905-08. Highly Recommended. By Winsor McCay. Eight magnificent full color prints of seminal Nemo pages. Here are bright, lush colors and fine details true to McCay's own vision--it's the finest printing and coloring of any Nemo page ever. The published pages were often muddy and colors varied from one newspaper to another. This set captures the finest of Nemo's fantasy art in exquisite detail. FUNNY GIRLS Guffaws, Guts, and Gender in Classic American Comics
Recommended. By Michelle Ann Abate. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, comics were enjoyed equally by both sexes, and girls were the protagonists of some of the earliest, most successful, and most influential comics. Abate, an associate professor of literature, examines the important but long-overlooked cadre of young female protagonists, from Little Orphan Annie and Nancy to Little Lulu, Little Audrey of the Harvey Girls, and Li'l Tomboy--a group that collectively forms a tradition of funny girls in American comics. Abate demonstrates the massive popularity these offbeat titles enjoyed, revealing their unexplored narrative richness, aesthetic complexity, and critical possibility. Art Books

By Ian Warrell. One of the most popular painters of all time, J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) created a remarkable collection of sketchbooks over the course of his career. Thoughtful, revealing, and beautifully rendered, these offer an unparalleled window into his creative process. His extensive travels took him all across Britain and Europe. Now in paperback, this first full survey of the artist's sketchbooks invites readers to take a privileged look over Turner's shoulder, witnessing the creation and development of ideas that can be traced through to his major paintings, from pencil sketches to water color roughs to more detailed preliminary renderings of landscapes, ships, harbors, and mountains. A local dealer who specializes in graphic arts sold us very small quantities of these three titles that we never before offered.

LARRY SALK California Dreaming and The Evolution of American Fashion Art 1945-1965
Warehouse find, 2007 By Frederic A. Sharf and Susan Ward. An exhibit catalog that accompanied American Fashion Art, 1945-1965 in Massachusetts. "This looks back from the youthful, casual styles created in what we call the "Sizzling Sixties"--to the new look created by Christian Dior in what we call the "Feminine Fifties"--and ultimately back to the austerity of the war years, marked by a determination to keep fashion alive in spite of wartime restrictions. Falk's art captures the spirit of Southern California in the first few years of the 1960s." Newburyport Press, 2007. Out of Print....More.

Highly Recommended. Art by Chéri Hérouard, René Vincent, George Barbier et al. This legendary French magazine reached its peak in both popularity and relevance during the tumultuous years during and just after World War I. The lavishly illustrated magazine employed many of the era's most famous and talented artists and became part of the fabric of Parisian life. GEORGE BARBIER Master of Art Deco
Highly Recommended. By Hiroshi Unno. George Barbier is today the most famous artist to come out of the heady Art Deco world in France in the 1910-1930 period. His illustrated books are enormously popular. His fashion illustration was spot on. His erotically themed pictures of semi-clad and nude women are some of the finest of the period. But to this day, very little has been written about him. This fine new book is based on an exhibit that originated in Japan, collecting a once-in-a-lifetime abundance of his original artwork. Nudity, eroticism. PIE, 2011. Mature Readers...More.

Society and the Seasons. Recommended. By Amber Jane Butchart. Right up to the roaring twenties and avante-garde pochoir illustrations. Before the invention of photography, the fashion-conscious public relied on illustrations in magazines to follow the latest developments in style and ensure they were dressed for High Society in every season. These illustrations became an art form in themselves, as key publications—and their taste-making illustrators—defined the looks of each era, featuring beautiful women--and some men--in the latest cutting-edge fashions. News and Notes

Our Christmas Card is here and we’re sending them to selected customers now. We’ll also put them in all orders that come in over the next week to ten days. The printer jumbled up the type on the back cover, more irritating than it is serious. Here is how it should have appeared:

Detective Comics Before Batman

I carefully announced this last week with my glowing endorsement, only to find out the project is (I hope temporarily) cancelled by DC. Arghh.

Wally Wood Christmas Book

This new book from Vanguard just arrived, and is a fun and inexpensive stocking stuffer still in time for Christmas.  [WALWCH. $9.95]

Haddon Sundblom

This has gone out of print and we have ripped through out last copies, as it is the cover feature on the newest catalog. We had set aside 19 copies with bumped corners, so we are now filling orders with these until they are gone. They are close to, but not perfect, but this was limited to just 900. I expect it will be selling for a premium in no time at all.

Out of Print Report

Alley Oop Sundays Vol 1 and 2. We have one left of volume 1, none of volume 2.

Wonder Woman Justice League Diorama —we have three left, 1 with a slightly bumped display box.

J.A.W. Cooper – Flora & Fauna, and Familiars are sold out. We still have a few copies of Viscera.

Comic Book Priceguide 48: Planet of the Apes Hardcover — three left; the softcover is still available. We still have the limited American Flagg edition and Green Lantern/Green Arrow SC and HC. The Big Big book is completely sold out.
