Sam Glanzman’s Voyage to the Deep, House of Mystery: The Bronze Age Omnibus, Unknown Anti-War Comics, Batman meets The Shadow, New Tarot, Vault of Horror and much more!

My favorite book this week is Sam Glanzman's Voyage to the Deep. Also first-rate is Bernie Wrightson and a host of other top creators collected in House of Mystery: The Bronze Age Omnibus. Craig Yoe has a new and different collection in Unknown Anti-War Comics. Batman meets The Shadow in an exceptionally well-done graphic novel, and Neal Adams gets a second collection of his Batman Silver Age adventures. Plus the handsome Red Sonja Tarot Cards, Moorcock's Hawkmoon, Vault of Horror Volume 5 (a stand-out collection), a blank book—really--by Brian Froud, and more.

THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY The Bronze Age Omnibus Volume 1
Collects issues #174-200, 1968-72. Highly Recommended. Edited by Joe Orlando. Art by Berni Wrightson, Alex Toth, Wally Wood et al. New 2018 introduction by Michael Uslan. As one of the most celebrated anthology titles of the Bronze Age of comics, The House of Mystery cemented its iconic status in the 1970s under the transformative leadership of editor Joe Orlando, whose impeccable instincts yielded a cornucopia of devilish delights in every intriguing issue. It was a training ground for up-and-coming new creators Neal Adams, doing fabulous covers and stories, and lots of work by Michael Kaluta and Berni Wrightson. It was also a place for veteran artists to have some fun doing offbeat stories with no superhero in sight. DC, 2018...More.

EC ARCHIVES Vault of Horror Volume 5
Collects #36-40, 1953-54. Final Volume. Our Highest Recommendation. By Bill Gaines, Johhny Craig et al. Art by Johnny Craig, Jack Davis et al. Foreword by Daniel Chabon. Dark Horse presents the final set of issues for this iconic title. Digitally recolored--using Marie Severin's original palette as a guide--and stories drawn by all-star comic artists Johnny Craig (all five covers and a story in each issue, besides writing several others), Bernie Krigstein (four stories, including the famous "Pipe Dream" and the highly experimental "The Catacombs"), Al Williamson, Reed Crandall, Graham Ingels (5 stories), Joe Orlando, and Jack Davis (3 stories).

Collects Spook #27-30,1954; and Baily Publication's Spook Comics,1946. Highly Recommended. By Jay Disbrow, John Giunta et al. Art by L.B.Cole, Rudy Palais, Howard Larson et al. The offbeat publisher Star Comics was run by L.B. Cole, a man who put great faith in bright colors and striking surreal cover designs. Today a great number of these are classics, including the three he contributes here. Inside we are treated to FIVE fun new stories from the eccentric but always fun Jay Disbrow. Plus appearances from jungle goddesses Rulah and Jo-Jo. A cool bonus is Spook one-shot from 1946, with a stunning cover and a Mr. Lucifer story by John Giunta, plus work by Howie Post and the always bizarre Munson Paddock. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

Anti-War Comics

Highly Recommended. Edited by Craig Yoe. Art by Steve Ditko, Pat Boyette et al. An action-oriented medium, comics have long used wars--real and fictional--as narrative fodder, often with a strong message attached. Buried in rare comics published during the Cold War were, strangely enough, powerful war, fantasy, and sci-fi stories that strongly condemned war and the bomb, boldly calling for peace. From obscure publisher Charlton Comics, here is a book-full of these, a whole bunch from the late 1950s by Steve Ditko. Plus a comic-length classic, "Children of Doom," by the fine Pat Boyette. And a host of other rare and fascinating tales of alien invasion and much more. IDW, 2018...More.

Closeout Price! Recommended. Art by Ralph Steadman, Peter de Seve, Milton Glaser, et al. Edited with an introduction by Steve Brodner. Based on the 2008 Society of Illustrators' exhibit, "Artists Against the War", this draws from the history of graphic protest and demonstrates the many ways that illustrators — in comics, editorial cartoons, illustrations for magazine articles, and so on — have reflected on the representations and misrepresentations of war, specifically in Iraq and Afghanistan. 56 nationally-known contributors, an all-star list including Grossman, Arisman, Kuper, Sorel, Holland, Billout, Silverman, Tim O'Brien, Banyai et al. Plus many history of war graphic novels—see Special Interest/History for more.

Brian Froud

Signed bookplate! Recommended. Froud provides eight pages of wonderful drawings, plus delightful endpapers in full color. And most choice are the delightful gold-embossed front and (different) back cover, printed on soft green cloth. The rest of the book is blank ivory white pages ready for your sketches, notes, or diary--whatever you might use such a handsome book for. Includes a large pocket in the rear. An inspiration to artists and writers. The covers are a pure delight, harkening back to the handsome illustrated books of one hundred years ago. Insight, 2018...More.

Sam Glanzman

Collects the Dell issues #1-4, 1962-64. Highly Recommended. By Drew Ford. Art by Sam Glanzman, Alex Toth et al. This is the first ever collection of Sam Glanzman's epic Voyage To The Deep. It follows the adventures of Admiral Jonathan Leigh, as he commands the mighty Proteus (a shape-shifting atomic sub!) through the deepest of Earth's oceans, battling fanged sea creatures, arctic monsters, anti-matter generators, sonic attacks, and a cataclysmic tsunami that is engulfing the entire U.S. Plus a wonderful, handsomely illustrated 19-page introduction by Steve Bissette where he offers us the entire history of super-submarines. It's Alive/IDW, 2019...More.

Item Code: VOYDH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 176pg, Full Color

This was a successful Kickstarter project. One of the stretch goals was doing the $24.99 edition, first slated to be a softcover, as a hardcover instead if the goal was attained. It was, which is why this very impressive book is very well priced.

Signed by Glanzman, Bissette & Dayglo! Collects the Dell comics #1-4, 1962-64. Highly Recommended. By Drew Ford. Art by Sam Glanzman, Alex Toth et al. Includes an oversized bookplate with nice bold signatures (Glanzman signed this before he passed away in 2017). This is the first ever collection of Sam Glanzman's epic Voyage To The Deep. On the downside, this deluxe is actually exactly the same book as the trade edition—with a signed bookplate added. On the up side, the bookplate is nice and large, it's signed by all three contributors, two of them artists, and it was signed by Sam before he passed away in 2017—one of the very few projects he ever signed. Supply may be limited, we subscribed (and paid for these) nearly two years ago. This is the publication price.

RED RANGE A Wild Western Adventure Signed
Almost Gone! Signed by Lansdale, Glanzman & Bissette plus bonus postcard. By Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman. Afterword by Stephen R. Bissette. "The first page of RED RANGE itself begins full tilt with graphic ultraviolence as Lansdale and Glanzman plunge us into a 19th century Klan lynching of a black Texas family. Abruptly in the midst of the atrocity, the Kluxers are interrupted by a mysterious rider who's a deadly shot with both his pistols and long-range Sharps buffalo rifle. It's the feared and hated (by the KKK, at least) Red Mask, a tough, lethal, black man who wisely keeps his identity concealed." --Locus. And then there are the dinosaurs! Drew Ford, 2017...More.

This was also a Kickstarter program, from the same publisher as Voyage to the Deep. We have just six copies left.

Reprints Dell's Combat #10, 1963. Highly Recommended. Edited by Jon B. Cooke. First in a series of reprints of this famous title from the 1960s, entirely illustrated by Sam Glanzman. Includes restored story pages and lots of extra content, including the original painted cover. Four complete stories carry us through this hallowed battle, as the Nazis pushed the entire British army, before the United States entered the war, right onto the shores of France. Only by mobilizing every private boat and anything that floated to carry them off, did they stave off a horrible defeat that might have changed the course of World War II. It's Alive, 2018...More.

USS STEVENS The Collected Stories
Closeout Price! Highly Recommended. By Sam Glanzman. Legendary Golden Age artist Sam Glanzman set many of his tales aboard the USS Stevens, the actual World War II destroyer on which he served. This full-color, hardcover treasury collects every single Stevens tale he ever published, more than 60 short adventures from Our Army at War, G. I. Combat, and other 1970s DC war comics as well as longer pieces from Marvel's 1986 revival of Savage Tales magazine and the more recent Joe Kubert Presents. Plus, this outstanding collection also includes the final, four-page story about the warship, newly written and illustrated by Glanzman himself. Dover, 2016...More.

BATMAN / THE SHADOW The Murder Geniuses
Collects Batman/The Shadow #1-6 and stories from Batman Annual #1. Highly Recommended. By Steve Orlando and Scott Snyder. Art by Riley Rossmo. This looks very good--it has a real pulp atmosphere, right down to Batman in a primitive costume and handling .45s like the Shadow. The original pulp magazine Shadow was a major influence of the creation of Batman by Bob Kane and Bill they finally meet. Excellent and nicely detailed art, reminding us of Michael Kaluta. While investigating a murder, Batman's prime suspect is Lamont Cranston. Two problems, though. Batman is not aware Lamont's alter ego is the master detective known as the Shadow. Two, and more importantly, Cranston seems to have died over half a century ago! Dynamite, 2018...More.

Over the years, many artists have contributed to the look of one of the most iconic characters in popular culture: Batman. The most influential and popular may be Neal Adams, who in the late 1960s put the Caped Crusader back in the shadows and updated his image for a new generation of fans. Now Adams' moody tales of the Dark Knight from the early 1970s are collected in trade paperback again, including a team-up story co-starring Deadman and the debut of the bestial Man-Bat. Dick Tracy Hurts

Closeout Price! Dailies & Sundays, 1966-67. Recommended. By Chester Gould. Tracy is on the trail of the aptly-named Mr. Bribery and his equally grotesque sister, Ugly Christine, in a story that also features a substance-abusing witch doctor and a shelf of shrunken heads. Meanwhile, newlyweds Junior and Moon Maid enter the story, and Dick Tracy's troubles are compounded when he comes face to face with master criminal Haf-and-Haf, one side of whose face is hideously disfigured. The Space Race has found Tracy, with flying bucket-like air cars, space ships, and the alien Moon Maid shaking up things! IDW, 2017. . Closeout Price! Dailies & Sundays, 1953-54. By Chester Gould. "Coming off his classic decade, Gould lives up to the expectations of his readership with a unique blend of brutal action, eccentric characterization, distinctive artwork, and hillbilly humor. Trying to point to one or two things about Dick Tracy that make it one of the most memorable of the American comic strips is a hopeless task." -from the introduction by Max Allan Collins. Closeout Price! Warehouse find, 1982. Limited edition reprint. By Chester Gould. With the huge popularity of Dick Tracy, Dell quickly jumped on the comics bandwagon and began collecting the daily strips. The results were these Feature Books, published by Dell Comics in 1937 and 1938 and collecting complete or nearly complete episodes in one issue. Although the interiors were still black & white, like the strips themselves, the covers were in glorious color and the size, 9x12, was striking for fans of the times. We don't have any artist credit yet to offer you, but it seems to us to be done in the style of Alex Ross. I like it. Looks like the classic Captain Marvel but still in a modern way. Collects #6-10,1957-58. Highly Recommended. By Steve Ditko, Rocco Mastroserio et al. Courtesy of the Traveler's creator, Steve Ditko, this title beats pretty much everything else on the spinner racks 1957/8. What it may have lacked in big budgets, the Mysterious Traveler made up for with sheer class, style and charm. Ditko does as many as 4 stories in an issue, so he's well represented. This was clear inspiration to Marvel's hugely popular Amazing Adult Fantasy, written for the thinking reader. We have yet to find out why, except for the silly trade wars going on, but some Canadian shipments are being charged a surcharge in the range of $10-12 by Canadian Customs. This is beyond our control. We will let you know more as we find out details. **sigh**

Our Catalog and Contact Info

We publish a color catalog every two months—if you’ve placed an order in the last 12 months, you will receive it hot off the press. If this is your first order, or if you’d like an extra copy, you can add one to your order: click here. Or call or send us your address and we’ll mail one to you. You can also download it here
