Sam Glanzman’s Voyage to the Deep, House of Mystery: The Bronze Age Omnibus, Unknown Anti-War Comics, Batman meets The Shadow, New Tarot, Vault of Horror and much more!

My favorite book this week is Sam Glanzman's Voyage to the Deep. Also first-rate is Bernie Wrightson and a host of other top creators collected in House of Mystery: The Bronze Age Omnibus. Craig Yoe has a new and different collection in Unknown Anti-War Comics. Batman meets The Shadow in an exceptionally well-done graphic novel, and Neal Adams gets a second collection of his Batman Silver Age adventures. Plus the handsome Red Sonja Tarot Cards, Moorcock's Hawkmoon, Vault of Horror Volume 5 (a stand-out collection), a blank book—really--by Brian Froud, and more.

THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY The Bronze Age Omnibus Volume 1
Collects issues #174-200, 1968-72. Highly Recommended. Edited by Joe Orlando. Art by Berni Wrightson, Alex Toth, Wally Wood et al. New 2018 introduction by Michael Uslan. As one of the most celebrated anthology titles of the Bronze Age of comics, The House of Mystery cemented its iconic status in the 1970s under the transformative leadership of editor Joe Orlando, whose impeccable instincts yielded a cornucopia of devilish delights in every intriguing issue. It was a training ground for up-and-coming new creators Neal Adams, doing fabulous covers and stories, and lots of work by Michael Kaluta and Berni Wrightson. It was also a place for veteran artists to have some fun doing offbeat stories with no superhero in sight. DC, 2018...More.

Digitally recolored--using Marie Severin's original palette as a guide--and stories drawn by all-star comic artists Johnny Craig (all five covers and a story in each issue, besides writing several others), Bernie Krigstein (four stories, including the famous "Pipe Dream" and the highly experimental "The Catacombs"), Al Williamson, Reed Crandall, Graham Ingels (5 stories), Joe Orlando, and Jack Davis (3 stories).

Today a great number of these are classics, including the three he contributes here. Inside we are treated to FIVE fun new stories from the eccentric but always fun Jay Disbrow. Plus appearances from jungle goddesses Rulah and Jo-Jo. Anti-War Comics

UNKNOWN ANTI-WAR COMICS
Highly Recommended. Edited by Craig Yoe. Art by Steve Ditko, Pat Boyette et al. An action-oriented medium, comics have long used wars--real and fictional--as narrative fodder, often with a strong message attached. Buried in rare comics published during the Cold War were, strangely enough, powerful war, fantasy, and sci-fi stories that strongly condemned war and the bomb, boldly calling for peace. From obscure publisher Charlton Comics, here is a book-full of these, a whole bunch from the late 1950s by Steve Ditko. Plus a comic-length classic, "Children of Doom," by the fine Pat Boyette. And a host of other rare and fascinating tales of alien invasion and much more. IDW, 2018...More.

Based on the 2008 Society of Illustrators' exhibit, "Artists Against the War", this draws from the history of graphic protest and demonstrates the many ways that illustrators — in comics, editorial cartoons, illustrations for magazine articles, and so on — have reflected on the representations and misrepresentations of war, specifically in Iraq and Afghanistan. 56 nationally-known contributors, an all-star list including Grossman, Arisman, Kuper, Sorel, Holland, Billout, Silverman, Tim O'Brien, Banyai et al. Sam Glanzman

VOYAGE TO THE DEEP
Collects the Dell issues #1-4, 1962-64. Highly Recommended. By Drew Ford. Art by Sam Glanzman, Alex Toth et al. This is the first ever collection of Sam Glanzman's epic Voyage To The Deep. It follows the adventures of Admiral Jonathan Leigh, as he commands the mighty Proteus (a shape-shifting atomic sub!) through the deepest of Earth's oceans, battling fanged sea creatures, arctic monsters, anti-matter generators, sonic attacks, and a cataclysmic tsunami that is engulfing the entire U.S. Plus a wonderful, handsomely illustrated 19-page introduction by Steve Bissette where he offers us the entire history of super-submarines. It's Alive/IDW, 2019...More.

Item Code: VOYDH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 176pg, Full Color
$24.99

This was a successful Kickstarter project. One of the stretch goals was doing the $24.99 edition, first slated to be a softcover, as a hardcover instead if the goal was attained. It was, which is why this very impressive book is very well priced.

VOYAGE TO THE DEEP Signed
Signed by Glanzman, Bissette & Dayglo! Collects the Dell comics #1-4, 1962-64. Highly Recommended. By Drew Ford. Art by Sam Glanzman, Alex Toth et al. Includes an oversized bookplate with nice bold signatures (Glanzman signed this before he passed away in 2017). It's Alive, 2019...More.

Item Code: VOYDD
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 176pg, Full Color
$68.00

On the downside, this deluxe is actually exactly the same book as the trade edition—with a signed bookplate added. On the up side, the bookplate is nice and large, it's signed by all three contributors, two of them artists, and it was signed by Sam before he passed away in 2017—one of the very few projects he ever signed. Supply may be limited, we subscribed (and paid for these) nearly two years ago. This is the publication price.

RED RANGE A Wild Western Adventure Signed
Almost Gone! Signed by Lansdale, Glanzman & Bissette plus bonus postcard. By Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman. Afterword by Stephen R. Bissette. "The first page of RED RANGE itself begins full tilt with graphic ultraviolence as Lansdale and Glanzman plunge us into a 19th century Klan lynching of a black Texas family. Abruptly in the midst of the atrocity, the Kluxers are interrupted by a mysterious rider who's a deadly shot with both his pistols and long-range Sharps buffalo rifle. It's the feared and hated (by the KKK, at least) Red Mask, a tough, lethal, black man who wisely keeps his identity concealed." --Locus. And then there are the dinosaurs! Drew Ford, 2017...More.

Item Code: REDRAD
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 112pg, Full Color

Includes restored story pages and lots of extra content, including the original painted cover. Four complete stories carry us through this hallowed battle, as the Nazis pushed the entire British army, before the United States entered the war, right onto the shores of France. Batman

BATMAN / THE SHADOW The Murder Geniuses
Collects Batman/The Shadow #1-6 and stories from Batman Annual #1. Highly Recommended. By Steve Orlando and Scott Snyder. Art by Riley Rossmo. This looks very good--it has a real pulp atmosphere, right down to Batman in a primitive costume and handling .45s like the Shadow. The original pulp magazine Shadow was a major influence of the creation of Batman by Bob Kane and Bill Finger...now they finally meet. Excellent and nicely detailed art, reminding us of Michael Kaluta. While investigating a murder, Batman's prime suspect is Lamont Cranston. Two problems, though. Batman is not aware Lamont's alter ego is the master detective known as the Shadow. Two, and more importantly, Cranston seems to have died over half a century ago! Dynamite, 2018...More.

Over the years, many artists have contributed to the look of one of the most iconic characters in popular culture: Batman. The most influential and popular may be Neal Adams, who in the late 1960s put the Caped Crusader back in the shadows and updated his image for a new generation of fans. Now Adams' moody tales of the Dark Knight from the early 1970s are collected in trade paperback again, including a team-up story co-starring Deadman and the debut of the bestial Man-Bat. Meanwhile, newlyweds Junior and Moon Maid enter the story, and Dick Tracy's troubles are compounded when he comes face to face with master criminal Haf-and-Haf, one side of whose face is hideously disfigured. SILVER AGE CLASSICS TALES OF THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER Volume 2
Collects #6-10,1957-58. Highly Recommended. By Steve Ditko, Rocco Mastroserio et al. Courtesy of the Traveler's creator, Steve Ditko, this title beats pretty much everything else on the spinner racks 1957/8. What it may have lacked in big budgets, the Mysterious Traveler made up for with sheer class, style and charm. Ditko does as many as 4 stories in an issue, so he's well represented. This was clear inspiration to Marvel's hugely popular Amazing Adult Fantasy, written for the thinking reader. A thick new collection of the adult manga-style series, Menage À 3 Volume 2 is here. It's an interesting item, mixing fairly explicit erotica with tongue-in-cheek circumstances and stories, for a lighter look at sex. Volume 1 is still available, also at $19.99 [MENA01].

We have, count ‘em, 42 more erotic graphic novels on our website. See Pin-Up & Adult/Graphic Novels/Newestto start with the latest releases. These include the Druuna series by Serpieri, Sunstone, Pussycats, Sky-Doll, Prison Ship by Bruce Jones and Esteban Maroto, Gullivera by Manara, and The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini. And that's just the first page.

News and Notes

Fantastic Worlds: The Art of William Stout Deluxe

This rolled in late today as I write this, too late to include here. Full details along with my personal recommendation next week. The regular edition, $75, has an added full color dragon bookplate, signed by Bill. It has been doing very well, and will be the cover feature of our next catalog—ready for your download in another week or so.

Upcoming Bookfairs

Anne and I will be exhibiting at two consecutive fairs in California coming up: Rare Books LA at the Pasadena Convention Center Feb 1 and 2, (note this is Friday and Saturday only), and at the Oakland International Antiquarian Book Fair February 8-10, Friday through Sunday.

We will also be exhibiting at the Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair, March 23, and a comic show, Sac-Con, March 17, also in Sacramento, California.

I will be a dealer guest (non-exhibiting) at Comic Fest in San Diego in March, and at San Diego Comic-Con's 50th Anniversary, in July.

Canadian Customers custom charges

We have yet to find out why, except for the silly trade wars going on, but some Canadian shipments are being charged a surcharge in the range of $10-12 by Canadian Customs. This is beyond our control. We will let you know more as we find out details. **sigh**
