Bix Beiderbeck and David Bowie graphic novels, art by Carl Otto and Fernand Khnopff plus Superman Smashes the Klan!

We're still celebrating our own Free Comic Book Day, so join the party. See available issues here. We have several fine graphic novels this week, from ones on Bix Beiderbeck and David Bowie, to the true and poignant story of a girl who rises from poverty to Rebel Queen to Parliament, and my favorite, Superman Smashes the Klan. Plus new art books, a new Carson of Venus novel, and more.

Here's our new catalog, ready for you to download. It's fun to have one of Frazetta's early Conan paintings for our cover. This first appeared as the cover to the paperback Conan The Conqueror, 1967.

BIX By Scott Chantler
"A marvel of imaginative illustrative narration..." Highly Recommended. From the acclaimed Eisner Award–nominated creator of Two Generals and Northwest Passage comes a gorgeous and spare illustrated exploration of the rapid rise and tragic fall of 1920s legendary jazz soloist Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke. Told in stunning illustrations, at least five per page, like a daily comic strip. But this is a near-wordless graphic novel -- it reminds us of Krigstein's famous "Master Race," it is so cinematic and beautifully paced. Bix was the most innovative jazz soloist of the 1920s after Louis Armstrong, but his life was tragic. Gallery 13, 2020...More.

BOWIE Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams
Recommended. By Michael Allred, Steve Horton and Laura Allred. Foreword by Neil Gaiman. This looks like fun. The Allred team is perfect for this retro look at legendary David Bowie and his many personas. It's an original graphic memoir of Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom and all the roles he played throughout a versatile life of music and performance. It begins with the rise of Bowie's career from obscurity to fame, paralleled by the rise and fall of his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. As the Spiders from Mars slowly implode, Bowie wrestles with his Ziggy persona. Insight, 2020...More.

PHOOLAN DEVI REBEL QUEEN
French graphic novel. Highly Recommended. By Claire Fauvel. A fascinating new graphic novel, translated from the French, and an absolutely true story. She rebelled against the ancient tribal rules (read: women are the property of their husbands) of India. At the age of 11 she became wife for a much older man. She ran away when he raped her. From that point on, there were few choices for her, but there was her ambition and thirst for revenge. She was saved from death by a handsome young bandit, which was her entry into becoming the Robin Hood of India--albeit, a bit more blood-thirsty. We've been busy recently doing special mailings. If you missed any, you can catch up with our Spring Sale here, and with our Rare and Out of Print email here. Both of these, and our adult email, are opt-in, so they only go out to those who sign up for them. You can do that HERE. We'll be working next on a new Adult email—we can't post this to our blog, but email Todd@budsartbooks.com for the last one.

Free Comic Book Day

Lowest in stock are French Ticklers and No One Escapes the Fury. I just rewrote my description of the 1974 Man-Thing #1--the darn thing Guides at $7-$14-$21 in Good, VG and FN. Our copies are in the VG to fine range, but with a case of them, it seemed to me like a lot to try and sell. But act now, I may price up the last of them. Also free are The Golden Age of Comics Fandom, with any purchase of a Bill Schelly book, and the Frazetta Icon brochure, free with any book with Frank's work in it...we have a lot, including the upcoming Fantastic Paintings which is what we based the catalog cover on.
