Recommended! Dope Rider is back in town! After a 30-year hiatus, Paul Kirchner restarted the adventures of his iconic, bony stoner hero who first appeared in 1975 in the psychedelic counter-culture magazine High Times. A frail young girl flees a roaring forest fire in the middle of the night and wakes up in a strange, tiny village populated by fairy-like creatures. Her hosts seem intrigued by the sparkles of light that seem to surround her but she remembers nothing except for a wall and flames. What follows is a tale of discovery, magic, tragedy, and adventure, as the girl discovers powers that may or may not be born of an ancient evil. She befriends a cunning talking wolf along the way, and together the two set out on a journey. THE BATTLE BOOK 3
Book 3, Conclusion. Recommended. By Frédéric Richaud & Patrick Rambaud. Art by Ivan Gil. Napoleon is furious. It appears the battle can no longer be won. The French cavalry is so exhausted it can t even gallop when charging. Ammunition is running out, while losses mount horrifically both in men and in irreplaceable officers. But the Austrians have paid an equally steep price, and a complete defeat may yet be avoided. Louis-François, Paradis, Fayolle — who will survive the terrible bloodbath the better to serve again in the next one? Cinebook, 2021....More.

Item Code: BATT03
Soft Cover, 8x11, 62pg, Full Color
$15.95
Get the complete story with Books 1 and 2, same price. I like how this is told from the perspective of the individual characters: common soldiers, our protagonist colonel who’s in love with a beautiful woman who's an enemy Austrian, and Napoleon himself...many of whom do NOT survive. Coming soon from the same creators is Berezina Books 1-3. It takes place after The Battle. It’s the story of Napoleon and his army invading Moscow, and walking into a trap...an ill-fated venture that proved to the world that Napoleon was not invincible. To be announced.

QUEEN OF THE RING WRESTLING DRAWINGS By Jaime Hernandez
For the past 40 years, acclaimed graphic novelist Jaime Hernandez has been creating a Love and Rockets-adjacent world — set in the heyday of 1960s and '70s women's wrestling — with an entirely separate cast of characters who have aged and evolved: the beautiful and brutal Bettie Rey, the I.F.W. Pacific Women's Champion — a.k.a. Golden Girl — as well as former champions Pantera Negra, Miss Kitty Perez, and many more. This best-of book spotlights the women who are often ignored in pro wrestling in 125 full color illustrations: pin-ups, action shots, fake wrestling magazine covers, all presented in a large paperback format that echoes the lucha libre magazines of the 1960s. Hernandez also discusses the work in an interview with fellow cartoonist Katie Skelly. Fantagraphics, 2021....More.

MATT BAKER The Art of Glamour
The life and career of the finest Good Girl artist of the Golden Age. Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Jim Amash and Eric Nolen-Weathington. This presents an impressive career cut tragically short. It features a wealth of essays; interviews with Baker's friends, family, and co-workers; and a treasure trove of his finest artwork, including several complete stories, at last giving this wonderfully talented artist his full due. In the early 1940s, Matt Baker became one of the earliest African-American comic book artists. But it wasn't the color of his skin which made him such a significant figure in the history of the medium — it was his innate ability to draw gorgeous, exciting women and handsome, dynamic men in a fluid, graceful style. TwoMorrows, 2012....More.

$39.95 $34.95
This is such a good book, when I saw it was still available, I had to bring it back in for another go. Any fan of good-girl art and beautiful comics illustration should have this book. Baker’s romance books for St. John are some of the fastest rising vintage comics today. And then there’s his The Phantom Lady! Baker is also one of the artists examined in Invisible Men, which I cannot recommend enough:

WILD MINDS The Artist and Rivalries that Inspired the Golden Age of Animation Hurt
Recommended. By Reid Mitenbuler. In 1911, famed cartoonist Winsor McCay debuted one of the first animated cartoons, based on his sophisticated newspaper strip “Little Nemo in Slumberland,” itself inspired by Freud’s recent research on dreams. McCay unleashed an art form and the creative energy of artists from Otto Messmer and Max Fleischer to Walt Disney and Warner Bros.' Chuck Jones. Their origin stories, rivalries, and sheer genius, were as colorful and subversive as their creations — from Felix the Cat to Bugs Bunny to feature films such as Fantasia — which became an integral part and reflection of American culture over the next five decades. News & Notes

Summer Sale Part 2

This emailed out on Tuesday, June 29. Part one was emailed on June 22, click here to see it on our blog. A handful of items have sold out, but we still have 96 items, most newly discounted and in VERY short supply. Click here to see all the items on our site.

Downtime

Last weekend, June 26-27, we had some downtime on our website. If you tried to order and could not, rest assured all was up and running again after a short delay.

On that note — and a separate issue — with the fire season coming upon us, our electricity provider, PG&E, may once again be shutting down the grid when our area is subject to high winds here, in order to prevent wildfires.

This happened several times last summer and fall. We mostly were able to work around it without much disruption. But it did shut us down for two full days, with only a phone recording to let you know if you tried to call. Happily our website is always up, it is served from a separate location with a powerful back up system. We update our phone message if we have such a situation where you can’t call us during working hours. We’re getting a generator to help us end-run this issue, to stay available and get orders out on time.

Stanley Kubrick Book & DVD on sale

Two book & film sets from Taschen just hit the sale table. Coming in is 2001: A Space Odyssey [SKASH] and A Clockwork Orange [SKCOH]. Taschen produced these complete with a book about the film AND the full, unadulterated film itself! Originally $35 each, these are now $19.95. We have four copies of each from our remaining stock, which we reduced in price, with more sale copies on the way.

The third companion volume, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, remains at regular price [SKBLH. $35]. You can also read about Kubrick’s Lord of the Rings in Under Exposed: The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made [UNDEREH. $29.99].
