JOHN HASSALL The Life and Art of the Poster King
Our Highest Recommendation. By Lucinda Gosling. Foreword by film director Mike Leigh. A biography of British commercial illustrator John Hassall (1868-1948), "The Poster King," who was also a prolific book illustrator and cover designer, with one hundred color illustrations. In the early twentieth century, he was one of Britain's best-known, highest-profile artists, as well know as Cheret, Mucha and Toulouse Letrec were in France for their poster art! Though he worked across a variety of disciplines, it was his commercial art for travel companies, political causes, and well-known brands that made him a household name. With bold lines, flat colors, and an engaging, cheery style, Hassall created some of the most famous and influential designs of the era. Unicorn, 2021....More.

ORWELL
Recommended. George Orwell's most celebrated work, 1984, and the prescient vision it contains of a society governed by Big Brother, predates the constant monitoring of people and data we are familiar with today. But his life was every bit as fascinating and forward-looking as his books. Orwell studied at Eton, joined the police in Burma, fought in the Spanish Civil War, fiercely opposed Stalinism, and lived in London's slums while working as a journalist. With illustrations by a team of artists including Juanjo Guarnido, Enki Bilal, Manu Larcenet, Blutch and André Juillard, Pierre Christin and Sébastien Verdier, Orwell offers readers an intimate yet definitive portrait of our greatest political writer. SelfMadeHero, 2021....More.

It's all here, from Windsor McCay and Max Fleischer to Zoetrope, Disney to Miyazaki, Hanna-Barbera to Pixar, and everything in-between! IDW, 2021....More.
