Signed full color bookplate with new work by Michael T. Gilbert, limited to 300! Our Highest Recommendation. Mr. Monster was one of the many heroes created during the Golden Age of Canadian comics. But Michael T. Gilbert updated this same Mr. Monster in the 1980s, and we've all seen what fun he had with the character. This new collection includes the two original 1940s Mr. Monster stories plus the earlier Doc Stearne stories and covers, all by creator Fred Kelly. Plus never-before seen art, an interview with Kelly, a new afterword by Gilbert and an original pin-up gallery from over two-dozen contemporary Canadian artists! Raid, 2021. ...More.

Michael also writes Mr. Monster's Comic Crypt, which explores old comics and artists in each issue of Alter Ego. It's one of my favorite columns there.

Howard's second most famous character: the barbarian king of Valusia. Marie Severin and John Severin contributed what many consider the creative highlight of their careers, in tales that showed how uneasy sat the crown on the head of Kull — especially when confronting wicked sorcerer Thulsa Doom! The art of Mike Ploog also features heavily, and Kull's first appearance is here, by Bernie Wrightson, from Creatures on the Loose #10, then on to Kull #1! Marvel, 2021. ...More.

Art Books

STUDIES By Glenn Barr
Recommended. The largest collection of the popular artist's drawings ever assembled. With over 200 sketches in his "old school," pencil-to-paper fluid style, Glenn Barr's energetic loose line dances on the page. His pencil strokes evoke a playfulness and ease, yet reveal a honed mastery of storytelling. Juxtapoz says his work "exude[s] the sensuality and tension found in pulp art or film noir," and HiFructose says it demonstrates a "unique style that combines cheesy glamour with scenes based in modern reality." Sympathetic Press, 2021. Mature Readers. ...More.

News & Notes

New Used/Rare Books Website

As I detailed last week, Anne (mostly) and I now have a brand new website to sell our older, one-of-a-kind books. This is a complement to the Rare Books we list here, with more far-ranging material not as much in the comics and fantasy art world, which we will continue to list here in Rare Books. But fantasy art is one of our specialties there too, and we'll also have some comics related books, so be sure to check us out and sign up for occasional email lists.

We're working our way through two major collections just acquired. And Anne is also scanning covers and updating all the books that were previously only seen on the websites ABE books and Biblio—and at the shows we do in person.

We'll list the website address each week in the Rare Books section. Bud Plant & Hutchison Books is an extension of Bud Plant Illustrated Books, which was a partnership between Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. and myself in the 1980s and 1990s.

Comic & Collector Supplies

Supply chain issues that you may have read about or experienced are severely effecting 4-mil Mylars. We currently don't expect to see more Standard/Regular sized mylars, the only size that we handle, until Spring of 2022. And then they may be prohibitively expensive for us to handle.

Meanwhile, we do have two sizes of the 2-mil Mylites: Silver/Gold and Magazine. And we have plenty of Plastic Bags and Backing Boards, as well as Fold-On book jacket covers. Fortunately we laid in large supplies of all of these early in the COVID era, since our primary source was planning to retire—that has served us well ever since.

Cost to us may also be going up. But until we have to restock at higher cost, we will maintain our regular prices which haven't changed in quite some time.

Sylvain Despretz's Los Angeles

I carefully noted in the new catalog that we were waiting for a reorder of the deluxe edition of this [LOSAD. $120], since it was on the back cover of the catalog. They reached us more quickly than I anticipated, so both editions are now available again.

Regular edition is [LOSAH. $65]. It's quite a special volume, published in France in a very limited printing. As well as exploring the art of storyboards, from a very fine artist who worked closely with Moebius, it's also a look at the Hollywood movie producing scene. Sylvain has worked for the biggest names there, from Tim Burton and Stanley Kubrick, to Ridley Scott.
