WILD MINDS The Artist and Rivalries that Inspired the Golden Age of Animation
Recommended. By Reid Mitenbuler. In 1911, famed cartoonist Winsor McCay debuted one of the first animated cartoons, based on his sophisticated newspaper strip "Little Nemo in Slumberland," itself inspired by Freud's recent research on dreams. McCay unleashed an art form and the creative energy of artists from Otto Messmer and Max Fleischer to Walt Disney and Warner Bros.' Chuck Jones. Their origin stories, rivalries, and sheer genius, were as colorful and subversive as their creations — from Felix the Cat to Bugs Bunny to feature films such as Fantasia — which became an integral part and reflection of American culture over the next five decades. BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR Restored Edition Hardcover
Art by Roy G. Krenkel. New frontispiece by Mark Schultz. In 1940, as the world hurtled into the darkness of global conflict, Edgar Rice Burroughs turned his legendary writing talents toward an interstellar tale of wonder and adventure set on a war-racked planet—one whose star was so distant that it was invisible to the Earth's most powerful telescopes. Featuring a protagonist who is transported to the planet Poloda by means reminiscent of John Carter's projection to Mars, Beyond the Farthest Star is set in a wholly unique solar system in which all the planets are aligned in the same orbit and connected by means of an atmosphere tube that allows for potential travel between worlds via airplane. Christmas Deadlines

East Coast: Dec. 9th. West Coast: Dec. 16th. Using Priority Rush Service: Dec 21st. These are educated guesses, so none of these dates are guaranteed. Best bet is to order early to give the postal service a few extra days to deliver.

Bud Gone

I'm off for a week to Utah to visit the desert in the Escalante area, with Anne, my daughter Ena, and fellow booksellers Ken Sanders and his family, and Bob and Susan Gavora. So while I've put together this email while on the road, I haven't been able to review most of the new books. Thus they will lack personal "recommended" notes and personal comments. I'll do those and also the new items from next week, when I get back home.
