PS Artbooks Archives

CLASSIC ADVENTURE COMICS Volume 7 Hardcover
Collects #1-5, 1953-54. Recommended. Johnny Dynamite, created by Pete Morisi, was a hard-boiled private detective, known as "The Wild Man from Chicago." Good friends with the D.A. but readily accepted by the underworld, he smoked cigarettes constantly, cursed frequently, and had a bad habit of getting shot and beaten by his enemies. But he always gave as good as he got; he was experienced and persistent, taking his cases personally and killing many of his early foes, claiming they were reaching for a weapon. Myra Benz, who had shot him in the eye, was brazenly killed without any true justification beyond his own sense of justice. PS Artbooks, 2023. More

Item Code: PCAD07H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color
$52.99
Also available in softcover with a different cover [PCAD07. $32.99]. Here are previous volumes.

KONGA Volume 3 Hardcover
Collects #11-15, 1963. By Joe Gill. More colossal Konga action pencilled by the late, great comic book giant himself, Steve Ditko! Including "The Monster Hunter" -- but just who is hunting who? "The Master Plan" -- aliens attack the earth but come face to face with Konga who destroys them! And "The Evil Eye" -- Soviet scientists get control over Konga?! Sounds like a potential diplomatic incident to me, but I'll let you be the judge of that! PS Artbooks, 2023. More

Item Code: KONG03H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color
$52.99
Also available in softcover, with a different cover [KONG03. $32.99]. Here are previous volumes.

CAVE GIRL Volume 1
Collects Cave Girl #11-14, 1953-54 and stories from Thunda #2-6, 1953-55. Jungle girls were wildly popular in the Golden age: Sheena, Rulah, Lorna, Jann of the Jungle. This is one of the best drawn of them all, though she came along too late and didn't last long-- but what a great run she had! Bob Powell drew every cover and every story; and publisher ME was one of the best of the late Golden Age. These are wonderful fun stories of lost cities, other jungle queens, all the good stuff! Includes her origin and a cross-over story with Thunda, "The Ape God of Kor." PS Artbooks, 2023. More

Item Code: CAVEG01
Soft Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color
$32.99
The hardcover edition came in separately just a couple weeks ago [CAVEG01H. $52.99]. We only have one on hand as I write this, but more are on order. I love this work by Bob Powell — Cave Girl is vastly neglected due to her short run in comics. Click here for more Powell classic work: Jet Powers, Space Ace, Worlds of Fear, etc!

CLASSIC HORROR COMICS Volume 4
Collects Fantastic Fears #2-3, Haunted Thrills #10-11, & Beware #15, 1953. Beginning with Fantastic Fears and "Fiends From The Crypt" -- Chasing a thief named Banco into the Rome sewers, Signor Renzi and his partner, Pietro find Banco with all his body eaten. Then we have Haunted Thrills and "Death At The Mardi Gras"-- Marcus Kemp creates a robot duplicate so realistic he gets blamed for the murders it committed. HT #11 features a rare Nazi death-camp story. And finally, even more horror and suspense from Beware #15, all brought to you by those masters of 1950's comics Robert Webb, Myron Fass, Harry Harrison, A.C. Hollingsworth, Marty Elkin, Tony Tallarico and the Iger Shop. PS Artbooks, 2023. More

Item Code: CLHOR04
Soft Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color
$32.99
Also in stock in hardcover with a different cover [CLHOR04H. $52.99]. Here are previous volumes.

News & Notes

Faust sold out

Faust Love of the Damned by David Quinn and Tim Vigil was allocated by the publisher and we were only able to fill the earliest orders we have. We are forced to refund orders above our allotment.

Seattle Antiquarian Book Show

Attendence was excellent, but our sales were a bit soft this year, sadly. We missed seeing several of our regular customers at the show. On the other hand, I was able to see before everyone else a small but stunning selection of Victorian era publisher bindings and illustrated books — what I have to call the Mile High/Edgar Church equivalent in the world of 19th and early 20th century book cover design, i.e. trade publisher bindings.

I gloriously stacked up quite a few to add to my collection and we are planning a trip to visit the booksellers in Los Angeles to see more of the collection. Two collectors, Ellen K. Morris & Edward S. Levin very carefully tracked down and purchased only the finest examples of bright, unblemished bindings. A book was published on the best of their collection several years ago, THE ART OF PUBLISHERS' BOOKBINDINGS, 1815–1915, Foreword by the esteemed expert Ruari McLean. It was based on an exhibit of less than 10% of their books that took place at the Grolier Club in New York, in 2000. It’s the best book ever done on the subject and the finest collection, at least in my opinion. I’ll run a few pictures next week.

New Collections

We also picked up almost 300 pulps: Planet Stories, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Startling, Golden Fleece, later Weird Tales, from an old customer of ours. Also many of the books he bought from us — sadly, he’s passed now. So we are currently on the way home with trailer in tow, with yet another batch of comics and art books from another long time collector who’s been selling us his books too. As always, if you are looking for anything in particular, send Todd@budsartbooks.com a note and he’ll see if we can help; it’ll be some time before we get all this listed. The pulps will probably go to MyComicShop on consignment, or just to shows with me, since we don’t usually list pulps on our website.

Upcoming Comics and Book Shows

We’ll have lots of new material at the Berkeley Comic Show in January. And we’ll be exhibiting illustrated, children’s and art books in Pasadena and the San Francisco International Antiquarian Book Show—both in February.

Tim Underwood - Underwood Books

My long-time good friend and prolific publisher, Tim Underwood, passed away on October 11 at the age of 75. He’d been battling cancer and had sucessfully beat it for a time, several years ago. Our customers know Tim (and his designer/author/colleague, Arnie Fenner) produced dozens of superb art books, including Frazetta Icon, Legacy, and Testament, Telling Stories, The Art of Jeffrey Jones, Artists Against the War, Tapestry: The Art of Robert E. McGinnis, Ellison’s Repent Harlequin Said the TikTok Man…so, so many books.

And of course, he and Cathy and Arnie Fenner produced Spectrum for twenty years, the premier book on fantasy illustration. And previously, as Underwood-Miller, founded in 1976, Tim co-produced books with partner Chuck Miller (who passed away in 2015) on Hannes Bok, Virgil Finlay, and by Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Jack Vance…

Arnie Fenner has written a fine eulogy for Locus Magazine and has given us permission to reproduce it on our website, taking the place of our previous memorial to my partner Jim Vadeboncoeur. It will be up on our home page in a day or two.

Tim moved to Grass Valley years ago and our kids grew up together for some time, so we were far more than mere acquaintances in the publishing world. I loved the guy, he was a wonderful and unique man, a fine father, and a top-tier publisher.
