MARK SCHULTZ CARBON Volumes 1-3 Set
Our Highest Recommendation. By Mark Schultz. The first thing you can count on in any collection from Mark Schultz is a kind of subject matter, featuring outré situations involving daring men and women, and, often, fearsome beasts. The second thing you can count on is his allegiance to certain graphic media, generally brush and ink, and graphite and charcoal, but sometimes watercolor too. The third thing you can count on is that, although the subject matter and media stay consistent, his design, draftsmanship and control of his presentation are always evolving and growing. You'll find all of these elements in Carbon 1-3. Flesk, 2013, 2016 & 2018. Out of print. Condition: Very Fine....More.

News & Notes

Trina Robbins August 17, 1938 – April 10, 2024

Eisner Hall of Fame, cartoonist and historian, Trina passed away this week. She was 85 and a long time partner of comics artist Steve Leialoha. I've known Trina since I don't know when--decades--we even did an interview together at a San Diego Comic Con a few years ago, about women in comics.

She certainly lived a very full life. She grew up reading comics, including Sheena and Wonder Woman. She became known in the comics world in the early Underground Comix days, editing and co-creating It Ain't Me Babe, Tits 'n' Clits and Wimmen's Comics, offering alternative and underground comics from a woman's point of view.

She designed the original Vampirella costume (she says it covered more of Vampi than today's version!). And she also created costumes for early rock stars. She knew Joni Mitchell, who wrote her into the song "Ladies of the Canyon," Jim Morrison of the Doors, the Byrds, David Crosby et al. Early on she had a hip clothing store in Manhattan. I remember her at the New York Comic Art shows, hanging out with Flo Steinberg, who was famously Stan Lee's Girl Friday for many years.

Trina wrote numerous books about women creators in comics, and also put together compilations of their work. Her most recent projects were Dauntless Dames: High Heeled Heroes of the Comics (2023) [DAUNH. $100, $90] and Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics, A Passion for Fashion (2022) [GLADH. $59.99). Both received My Highest Recommendation.

Other pioneering works of hers include Women and the Comics (1985) A Century of Women Cartoonists (1993), and The Great Women Super Heroes (1996). She edited Tarpe Mills' Miss Fury: Sensational Sundays, 2011 and and 2013. And much, much more. We offer much of her work on our website in Rare Books.

The New York Times did a very handsome writeup that I just read last night, as did Bleeding Cool. She also has a very good Wikipedia profile, well worth your time. She was a tireless champion for women in comics--she even got to draw Wonder Woman for some time. She elevated the roll of women appearing in comics stories; she preserved women creators with interviews and articles; she honored women creators still living by making sure they were recognized and appreciated. An all-around important, generous and important name in the world of comics. She will be missed.

~Bud

We publish a color catalog every two months—if you’ve placed an order in the last 12 months, you will receive it hot off the press. If this is your first order, or if you’d like an extra copy, you can add one to your order: click here. Or call or send us your address and we’ll mail one to you. You can also download it here.

Place your order before noon PST, Monday through Friday for SAME DAY shipping (for in-stock items).

Note: FREE SHIPPING OVER $300. If your order total is $300 or more and you are in the U.S., we pay the standard shipping cost.
