J.A.W. Cooper

J.A.W. COOPER GENESIS COLLECTION
New printing. Highly Recommended. This compiles the drawings and paintings from the sold-out 2017 releases of Familiars, Flora and Fauna, and Viscera with a few extras thrown in. This art book contains nudity and is intended for mature audiences. A journey into the violent, steaming innards of making art — raw, spontaneous and unfettered. Drawing on themes of the occult, the artist explores animals as allegories for the human condition. Cooper explores instinct and intuition as the spark of artistic creation, to delight the feral child at our core. Flesk, 2024. Mature Readers....More.

J.A.W. COOPER PASTORAL
Limited, 500. Highly Recommended. Pastoral is a romp through subject matter that makes Cooper supremely happy. Expect humor, expect sensuality, expect chickens, expect all three in one image. If that sounds like a damn good time to you we think you will get along famously with Cooper. Pastoral is filled with their energetic, expressive pencil and ink drawings of wildlife and their stewards — often beautifully naked young ladies. Gouache works from Cooper's travels and gallery paintings also appear. Flesk, 2024. Mature Readers....More.

ALSO AVAILABLE
GILT By J.A.W. Cooper Signed
Signed! Highly Recommended. This is the fifth collection of drawings and paintings by the illustrator and fine artist J.A.W. Cooper. It documents Cooper's personal struggle through guilt, mourning and, finally, acceptance as the artist lost and then refound a love for their craft after taking a two-year hiatus. Through imagery revolving around the cycles of life and death, seasons, joy and pain, Cooper explores the relationship between making art and an unhealthy reliance on it for self-worth and identity. Flesk, 2023....More.

Item Code: GILTD
Hard Cover, 9x12, 176 pg., Partial Color
$79.95

Gilt is also available as an unsigned non-limited edition hardcover [GILTH. $49.95].

We also have one copy of Pastoral from 2018, in Fine (not quite perfect) Condition [RB5744. $35]. It has a different cover and is slightly larger (11x12) than the new edition.

Cooper in her own words: “I was born in England, grew up in Kenya, Sweden, Ireland, and Southern California, and currently live in Portland, OR. Raised by two freshwater ecologists, it is no surprise that an interest in the natural world is central to my work.”

“I work commercially as an illustrator and art director for TV and movie campaigns half of the month, and spend time on my own projects as a gleeful recluse the other half of the month. In my 'free time' I am a profoundly creepy, terrarium-building, true-crime-obsessed, solo-camping, feral human. I own a machete. I know how to build a fire.”

These new books are discounted because John prices them higher for the general book market, but then offers them direct (via Kickstarter and his website) at a discount. He passes this on to us so that we can do the same. These were just listed in the latest Diamond Previews for shipping in June or July — making our copies the first available.

PRINCE VALIANT Volume 28
1991-1992. By Hal Foster, John Cullen Murphy and Cullen Murphy. On a quest in the Asian lands of Cathay, Prince Valiant encounters a fire-breathing mechanical dragon and the legendary adventurer Prester John. Armies converge, mountains crumble, and a father and son are reunited. Mordred escapes imprisonment and treacherously stabs Arn, who learns that Maeve is soon to give birth. Val discovers a lost colony and wrestles with a tusked whale off the coast of Greenland, but a spell overcomes the expedition on the Isle of Lost Youth. Plus, Tom Batiuk (Crankshaft, Funky Winkerbean) shares a fanciful comic-strip imagining of the story behind the choosing of Hal Foster's successor. Fantagraphics, 2024....More.

MEDEA
Highly Recommended. By Blandine Le Callet. Art by Nancy Peña. The legendary sorceress from the Greek myths has been cast as many things — a caring mother, a passionate lover, an independent woman refusing the tyranny of men, a barbarian, a formidable witch, mistress of occult forces. Some would call her a monster. And yet, who was Medea, really? Beyond the hearsay, exaggerations, and distortions inflicted by time, this is Medea’s story in her own voice. STAN MACK'S REAL LIFE FUNNIES
Recommended. Sketchbook in hand, Stan Mack haunted the New York City environs, watching, listening, overhearing, and interviewing its inhabitants. He drew a comic strip every week based on what he saw and heard, famously using verbatim dialogue for his graphic dramatizations. A mixture of humor, spontaneity, serendipity, and weirdness, Mack’s comic strip snapshots caught New Yorkers — whether it is an extortionist calligrapher, a baby evading arrest at her first protest, a stroll up Broadway with a ferret, or an unlucky-in-love dolphin trainer — being who they are in all their unguarded and uninhibited glory. EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AUTHORIZED LIBRARY Volume 21 Tarzan the Magnificent
Recommended. By Edgar Rice Burroughs. New cover and frontispiece by Joe Jusko. Foreword by Wolf Larson. Afterword by Henry G. Franke III. The half-dead American raved of an unknown city...of women warriors ruled by a malignant wizard...of a great diamond, the Gonfal, with strange hypnotic power...of a long-lost English nobleman...of the savage queen who had betrayed her duty and helped him to escape. Tarzan puts little faith into Stanley Wood’s story — until he sees the power of the Gonfal draw the American in spite of himself back into the clutches of the Amazons of Kaji. Then it is that the ape-man becomes once more the implacable hunter — for though he cares nothing for diamonds or lost civilizations, no one may be allowed to harm anyone the Lord of the Jungle has taken under his protection. EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AUTHORIZED LIBRARY Volume 22 Tarzan and the Foreign Legion
Highly Recommended. By Edgar Rice Burroughs. Cover and frontispiece by Joe Jusko. Foreword by Robert B. Zeuschner. Afterword by Henry G. Franke III. A personal favorite of mine, written during World War II and with more modern sensibilities and a more mature ape-man in very different situations outside his own country. - Bud. When an American bomber crashes in the jungles of enemy-held Sumatra, the survivors face the perils of a completely unknown world...and the RAF colonel who flew with them as observer only seems to compound their danger by going mad — stripping to a loincloth and throwing away his weapons except for his knife. But for Colonel John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, the hazards of wild beasts and a remorseless enemy are a familiar and joyously accepted challenge — a chance to return to his true identity of Tarzan of the Apes. Gathering a motley crew of allies of many nations, Tarzan works a terrible vengeance on the occupying Japanese and leads an epic trek to the coast, to a final ocean rendezvous with enemies human and inhuman. EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AUTHORIZED LIBRARY Volume 23 Tarzan and the Madman
Highly Recommended. By Edgar Rice Burroughs. New cover and frontispiece by Joe Jusko. Foreword by Thomas Yeates. Afterword by Henry G. Franke III. Includes cover and all seven plates by Reed Crandall from the first 1964 Canaveral Press edition. The drums boom forth an incredible message from tribe to tribe: Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, has become an enemy to all, stealing and enslaving their women...as well as the daughter of an English millionaire, who offers a princely reward for her recapture and Tarzan’s death. Certainly her captor told Sandra Pickerall that he was Tarzan...but he also told her he was God... the real Tarzan follows their trail with one thought in mind — to pursue and destroy the man who has stolen his name and made it infamous in the jungle world he loves. EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AUTHORIZED LIBRARY Volume 24 Tarzan and the Castaways
Highly Recommended. By Edgar Rice Burroughs. Cover and frontispiece by Joe Jusko. Foreword by Joe Jusko. Afterword by Henry G. Franke III. Includes the Frank Frazetta cover and his six plates for the 1964 Canveral Press edition. Stranded on an uncharted Pacific island, Tarzan is forced to take command of an ill-sorted party — English aristocrats, a Dutch officer, a woman of doubtful reputation — to ensure their safety from a band of mutineers led by a madman. A lost colony of Mayans, avid for potential victims for their barbarous human sacrifices, only adds to their danger. But the Lord of the Jungle has unexpected allies. Cast away with his band is a shipment of African animals unknown to the island, striking terror in the hearts of the Mayans and mutineers alike, but old friends and familiar antagonists to the man brought up among them...Tarzan of the Apes. As an ERB and Tarzan fan, I find these final four novels to be among the most interesting. The earlier novels such as Tarzan of the Apes, Return of Tarzan, Tarzan the Terrible, Tarzan the Untamed (where he fights against the Germans in Africa) are all great, packed with action and suspense.

But in these final volumes, we have a more mature Burroughs. Foreign Legion finds Tarzan flying for the RAF in World War II, just as ERB was in the service during the war. Madman was not published until 15 years after ERB passed away (in 1950). Ditto for Castaways, actually three short stories, unusual for Tarzan. Except for the interconnected Jungle Tales of Tarzan, all other titles were full novels.

ERB, Inc had difficulty getting enough copies to fill advance orders, so we’ve been filling our advance orders for the past couple months as they shipped us partials of our order. Now, at last, we have copies of the individual volumes and the final set of four. Most customers seem to prefer the sets. All previous volumes and all four-volume sets remain available also, all at the same prices.

THE FANTASTIC WORLDS OF FRANK FRAZETTA
Limited First Edition, 6000 individually numbered copies. Available from us but now out of print. Our Highest Recommendation. Introduction by Dan Nadel. This monograph is the biggest and most complete ever produced on the artist, done in collaboration with the Frazetta family and with top collectors. Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed lord of fantasy art for 50 years, his fame only growing in the 10 years since his death. With his paintings now breaking auction records, he's long overdue for this ultimate monograph. This has a LOT of material never before seen or rarely seen. Many nudes that Frank just did for himself are here; early work from his youth and early days in comics, Li'l Abner and Thunda pages, early comic book covers — all from his original art. There are also later advertising works never before collected, early paperback covers now show from the paintings. There's also a good bibliography of many of the works originally published as paperback, magazine and book covers. Taschen, 2023. Out of Print. Rush Service and International shipping would require an additional charge....More.

If this is your first order, or if you’d like an extra copy, you can add one to your order: click here. Or call or send us your address and we’ll mail one to you. You can also download it here.

Place your order before noon PST, Monday through Friday for SAME DAY shipping (for in-stock items).
