DC Finest

DC FINEST SUPERMAN The First Superhero
The first two years of Superman adventures: Action Comics #1-25, Superman #1-5, and New York World's Fair #1, 1938-40. Our Highest Recommendation. This is a must-have collection. First 25 Superman stories in Action Comics plus Superman #1-5 and World's Fair #1. Holy smokes, this is ground-breaking great early comics at little more than $1 per issue! These are great stories, when Superman still had limitations, when police were still unsure about him, where he'd occasionally let criminals die (he drops a carload of them into the Hudson River, for example). He meets Lois, Luthor (Action #23), Jimmy Olsen (#6), The Daily Planet is first mentioned... Welcome to DC Finest, a major new publishing initiative presenting comprehensive but bargain-priced collections of the most celebrated periods in DC Comics history. DC Comics, 2024....More.

Including character-defining tales such as her 1989 solo debut by Mindy Newell and J.J. Birch exploring the feline fatale’s origins; Peter Milligan and Tom Grindberg’s Catwoman Defiant, which was released concurrent to the character’s big-screen debut in 1992’s Batman Returns; and the first year of the Catwoman ongoing series from writer Jo Duffy and artist Jim Balent. HARVEY KURTZMAN'S MARLEY'S GHOST
Highly Recommended. By Kurtzman, Josh O'Neill, and Shannon Wheeler. Art by Gideon Kendall. The Eisner Award Winning version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol in graphic novel form, in print for the first time! This is the posthumous completion of legendary creator Harvey Kurtzman's very own adaptation. His ambitious concept for Marley's Ghost began in the 1950s — as an early "graphic novel" — but was never realized. 70 years later, writers Josh O'Neill and Shannon Wheeler expand upon Kurtzman's extensive adaptation notes while illustrator Gideon Kendall's outstanding artwork utilizes Kurtzman's breakdowns and stylistic choices to make this long-lost vision a reality! Bonus pages: a behind-the-scenes look at Kurtzman original art and how it has been adapted, step by step. Excellent artwork. Ablaze, 2024....More.

JIMMY! The Comic Art of James Swinnerton
Highly Recommended. The definitive collection of comics and illustration from 1892 to 1942 by James Swinnerton, one of the founding fathers of the American comic strip. Jimmy! includes an illustrated biography and essays by co-editor Michael Tisserand and Eddie Campbell. His sgnature strip Little Jimmy began by mixing satire of New York society with stories of rural America. He then took the characters on the road to South America, Mexico, and then settling for many years in Swinnerton’s beloved Southwest. Also included in this book are his early one-shots and series like the rakish Mr. Jack and the anthropomorphic Mt. Ararat, and his 1940s stylized comic of the modern West, Rocky Mason. Last week it looked like these were all selling out and we could not get more. But…we found out the publisher still had small stocks of the unsigned editions. So we have a good quantity coming in of the Buscema and Windsor-Smith covers (the best seller), and just a few more of the Jim Lee.

Reserve a copy now to avoid missing out, this is likely our final chance to restock these. They’ve proved VERY popular for us. I don’t think they were offered through Diamond or comic shops at all, just on Zoop.

An amazing 5" x 7 1/2", 224-page collection is coming on January 23rd. I’ll be picking up copies direct from Flesk, all signed by Arthur. The hardcover is sold out, sorry, but we will have a good supply of the softcover. And…we will offer it at the amazing low pre-pub price of $19.95 for just one week: January 23 to January 29. I’ve been offering vintage comics collections that I’ve accumulated over the past couple of decades, through my buddy John Stephenson on Whatnot.com. You can sign up here to see upcoming shows—they are like ebay auctions but they move fast. John will offer around 100 comics in each show, and many go for very low bargain prices.

If you have questions about Whatnot, John is available at Worlds of Wonder: 408-310-1172 or email: worldsofwondercomics@yahoo.com. The next auction of my comics, The Bud Plant Collection, will be Sunday, December 22 at 3:00pm PST.
