WONDER WOMAN The Art & Making of the Film

Patty Jenkins'  Wonder Woman sees the hero brought to the big screen for the first time in her own movie, and fully realizes the breathtaking wonder, strength, and grace of such an historic character. This celebrates the creation of the groundbreaking movie, showcasing the earliest concept art, set and costume designs, sketches and storyboards and wonderful photos of all the stars in action. The book goes deep into the filmmaking process, from creating the island of Themyscira to the war-torn trenches and towns of World War I Europe. Titan, 2017...More.

Art Books

Highly Recommended. "Critics say I paint only beautiful women," Pino says. "It's heaven to me, going deep, studying character, body language, expressions." In the same class as Sorolla, Russell Flint and Hanks, Pino is a master of color, of light and shade, of exquisite skin tones and faces and hair and rounded, curvaceous bodies. This is so new it's only available from the Pino family and in China and Hong Kong. There is no overlap with his other book, published in 2003. We think this is entirely new work. Classic, 2017...More.

PINO Contemporary Realism
Recommended. By Pino Daeni. Featuring Pino Daeni's remarkable paintings. Born in Italy, Pino's paintings feature soft, romantic characters. This collection includes more than 90 oil paintings. Rich, textured color is combined with feminine, ephemeral forms whose light and shadow suggest depth and mystery. Every image is shown full page, with many two-page spreads. Beautiful and unforgettable, the work of this recently deceased master leaves a lingering warmth. Classic Publications, 2003...More.

Alphonse Mucha

WORLD OF MUCHA A Journey to Two Fairylands Paris and Czech
Highly Recommended. By Hiroshi Unno. A superlative collection of Mucha's works, behind highly ornate, silver-embossed covers, spanning his entire career from his beginnings in Paris to his final days in what was then known as Czechoslovakia after four years in the United States. His most representative works are featured, not only in the field of fine art but also in editorial design and graphic design. As a special feature, this book introduces more typography and package design works compared to other publications on Muchas work. A good deal of this is not collected elsewhere. And, of course, Mucha's masterpiece the "Slav Epic" is also covered in detail, along with an interpretation and its historical background. PIE, 2017...More.

With abundant top quality color reproductions, this documents his success as an illustrator and as an avant-garde artist. From his iconic posters for Sarah Bernhardt, amazing ads for chocolates, perfume and other popular products, to his series on The Seasons, rare book illustrations, magazine covers, etc. Flame Tree, 2013...More.

Our Highest Recommendation. By Thomas Negovan. By 1899, Alphonse Mucha had experienced four years as the most recognizable proponent of Art Nouveau graphics and the most celebrated illustrator in Paris. The massive output in the advertising and decorative work earned much for Mucha's publisher but very little for the artist himself. So Mucha insisted upon the release of a deeply personal work, and printed 510 copies of what he for the remainder of his life considered his works-on-paper masterpiece, Le Pater. His  Symbolist masterpiece features a female deity protecting humankind, and a number of sophisticated occult themes across a series of images of mystical illustrations. Century Guild, 2016...More.

Excellent coverage of 1936-1975, which is where our personal interests lie, but carrying on right up to the present. Part coffee-table book, part critical analysis, and one hell of a huge art book. Graphic Novels & Archives

Time Travel on the High Seas! Highly Recommended. By Philip Pullman. Art by Fred Fordham. Philip Pullman is the award-winning author of The Golden Compass, which became a fine film, and was the first in the trilogy His Dark Materials. Those are serious credentials--and here we are treated to his first graphic novel, no adaptation but an entirely new and original work. And I really like it. While I found the artwork just a bit underwhelming, that is more than made up for with a brilliant story, of a "ghost" ship peopled by a crew from different eras. Graphix, 2017...More.

In 1934, and for more than ten years thereafter, Good Housekeeping magazine--one of the leading and most widely-read magazines of the time--featured full-color one-and two-page retellings of the wildly popular Disney cartoons. Each one of these beautiful little gems were newly hand-painted by Disney artists. Collects Amazing Spider-Man #68-104, 1969-72. Recommended. By Stan Lee and Roy Thomas. Art by John Romita. Few comic books have ever come close to reaching the page-turning power, action, and drama of Amazing Spider-Man. Spidey grew to become not just the most relatable hero in comics, but also the top seller! And you'll see the reasons why again and again in one iconic story after another: the Stone Tablet Saga, the debut of Black Widow's new look, Kingpin's Shakespearean family drama, Captain Stacy's tragic death, the pathos of Peter Parker's love triangle with Gwen Stacy and Spidey, and the historic Comics Code-defying "drug" issues. But he's still hot on the trail of the world's first submarine... till a ferocious giant squid evens the score! LENNON The New York Years
Recommended. By David Foenkinos and Eric Corbeyran. Art by Horne. Lennon adapts David Foenkinos' legendary novel to graphic album form, with striking black-and-white illustrations by French artist Horne. In imagined meetings with a fictional psychiatrist, Lennon recounts in his own words his tumultuous life. Flashbacks mix early Beatles successes and extreme behavior, with the New York years of 1975-80.  This recounts setting aside his career, meeting and leaving and rejoining Yoko, working to spread peace, doing heroin, on-the-road encounters with nubile and willing young ladies, and the extremely bizarre business of being John Lennon, one of the most famous personalities on earth. Rose City Book Fair, Portland, Oregon
Anne and I will be doing this annual show for the first time June 16 and 17, Friday and Saturday. We’ll have just a small stock there, so if you plan to attend and would like us to bring anything, either out of print or new, call or email us. No obligation, happy to do it. Anne is at 530-273-9762 Or contact me directly at People always come by the show and ask “did you bring” something; sometimes we did, often we didn’t, with thousands of items to pick from and just so much space.  This way, you know we’ll have it for you.
San Diego Comic-Con 2017
The big news this year is that we’ve gone seriously downscale. We will be in J4, at the end of the 1100 row opposite the lounge area and food concessions, in the Exhibitor Tables area. After 47 years of knocking ourselves out to get truckloads of product to the show and after long consideration, we decided to be kind to ourselves. We have been facing ever increasing expenses to do the show, from booths and trucking costs, to hotels that gouge every year. Many of our former customers have given up attending, some simply because they cannot get tickets that sell out in minutes online. Many of the folks that attend these days are more interested in movie stars and variant editions and freebies than in the specialty books that we bring along. That is not to say we don't appreciate you who still come to the show, and who shop with us! We really, really are glad some of you can still get in to the show, and it's a pleasure to see you. But there are just not enough of you to make it work for us anymore. So this year we'll still be there, with a smaller, hand-picked selection of our very best books. I hope to see you there.
We will be featuring the very latest major books, exclusive items, signed books, and a small stock of out-of-print material: fanzines, books, and vintage comics. The space we have is equivalent of 1/2 of a booth (last year we had three full booths). But after last year, adding up our expenses, we found once again we were knocking ourselves out for more than a solid week essentially for free. Sales aren’t bad, really, but the expenses of selling heavy, low priced books are just too much.
We want to be at the show, to find new products for you, and I need the time to go out and look for new items for you, as well as vintage comic books for myself. I don’t have that running three booths every year. In actuality, this way we can do more for our customers who DON’T attend the show. You, after all, are the core of our business—not the very few people who attend the Comic-Con and have an interest in our material. We’ll do a better job of finding new material for you, linking up with publishers, and carrying on our day-to-day business back here at the warehouse.
