Collected from Topolino, 1973, ’76, ’83 & ’91. By Giorgio Cavazzano. Art by Max Monteduro, Christos Kontrotis. Uncle Scrooge wants to publish a historic tell-all interview with World War I flying ace Eddie Brickenbatter. But the legendary hero has amnesia — so to cure it, Scrooge tells Donald Duck to reenact the plane crash that caused Brickenbatter to lose his memory in the first place! Then, in “Plantastic Voyage,” Donald and Scrooge shrink down to the size of germs on a leaf. And Daisy Duck embarks on a super-secret mission in “The Dazzling Duck She-Venger.” Finally, Mickey Mouse, on the trail of a missing man, finds himself in a twisting mystery of film noir thrills and chills in “The Case of the Cut-Off Calls!” “Plantastic Voyage” is a spoof on the film Fantastic Voyage. The germs are all now walking, talking characters and there’s good germs, and bad germs, and it’s one wild adventure with the Ducks in the middle. DISNEY MASTERS Volume 13 Mickey Mouse The Sunken City

Our spunky heroes are lost at sea, and they get caught in a pitched battle between buccaneer Pete and sneaky submarine commander Captain Grapple. At stake: the ancient gold of Port Rancid, a pirate stronghold that sank beneath the waves — and is now guarded by a pack of very jealous sea monsters! Then, Mickey and Goofy have their hands full with a host of mystery puzzlers — from canoe-going ghosts in “Legend of Loon Lake” to hi-tech arsonists in “The Phantom Fires” to a piratical parrot in “The Castaways of Whale Bay!” Fantagraphics, 2020....More.

For old-time fans, this new volume is a real treat. Even though the Disney Masters series is mostly featuring stories first done in Europe, this is the third to instead offer us the beloved Mickey Mouse adventures that older baby boomers grew up reading in the back pages of Walt Disney's Comics & Stories.

While Barks was doing his one-off ten pages in the front of every issue, artist Paul Murry was serializing these into long, satisfying adventures, with Mickey as brave and fearless hero, solver of every sort of problem and obstacle. It's great work. Here are the previous two volumes, collecting the Walt Disney's Comics & Stories Mickey series beginning with issue #152 in 1953, all by Paul Murray:

LON CHANEY SPEAKS
Recommended. By Pat Dorian. A graphic novel debut: the life of the legendary silent-film actor Lon Chaney (the original Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame), as imagined by an artist whose work recalls the style and skill of early-era New Yorker cartoonists. From the artist: “‘No one will ever love me!’ This was this near-universal fear that makes Lon Chaney’s characters continue to resonate with us today. On their surface, most of them are distinctly unlikeable: they are monsters, outcasts, criminals. But through his unique magic, Chaney makes them empathetic. He pioneered the craft of makeup artist long before that term ever existed, and he used his expertise to hide himself from public view–what if nobody loved him?” Pantheon, 2020. ...More.

History of EC Comics

We are still sending out backorders on this—over 150 of them! Couldn't just snap our fingers and make it happen. Each book is in its own giant-sized Tashen clamshell cardboard box. We bought special boxes and repacked each, box in box, with lots of bubble wrap. We hope to finish shipping these by early next week. Meanwhile, we have just 14 left on hand right now, but we have a new shipment coming in about two weeks.

Grant has been very generous with the color bookplate, drawn by Angelo Torres and signed by himself. We still have plenty of these. The earlier version of the bookplate, limited to 100 and signed by Torres and the Gaines family, are all spoken for and are going out in order of orders received. Grant kept the first one for himself, and I got #87 from the 100. We also got 20 Artist Proof copies but they are also spoken for.

Download Catalog

The print run/limitation on the book itself is 5000 copies and, in fact, is stated so using an original EC membership card in the indicia! Grant left no extra detail undone!

I just began reading it this morning, and I sent Grant a gushing email. It is SO good. I love all the EC ephermera, cover recreations, fanzines, office cartoons, original photos. Not to mention EVERY EC comic is pictured, right back to the first 1946 titles. M.C. Gaines' earlier career is also well covered. It's every EC fan's dream book.

Spectrum 27

John Fleskes is personally delivering our hardcover editions this weekend, far in advance of regular outlets. Amazon has a November delivery date. But he's out of softcovers, so ours will have to come from his book distributor, meaning they are a few weeks away. He's also delivering the new printing of The Big Tease by Bruce Timm, which we have been out of for several weeks.
