Highly Recommended. Edited by Dian Hanson. Silly Fool Comics fills the final page in this final volume, with a devilish creature telling the anguished Crumb, "YOU Will Soon Be DEAD!" He was a mere 67, but in his self-absorbed way was already obsessing about death, when not making intimate and loving portraits of his wife Aline and all the other women who'd tormented his libido since boyhood. Most impressive in this book are his historic tableaux, some single page, others multi-page strips, including Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England, My Secret Life by "Walter," Rough Women of the Dark Ages and The Apache Dance, from a 1930s Parisian postcard.Taschen, 2021. Mature Readers. ...More.

Recommended. Bound in the Japanese tradition with uncut paper, the original 36 plates plus the additional 10 later added by the artist. The renowned print maker documents 19th-century Japan with exceptional artistry and emotion, celebrating its countryside, cities, people, and serene natural beauty. Taschen, 2021. ...More.

Graphic Novels

Collects #1-5, 2019. Recommended. The Golden Age Daredevil (from Lev Gleason publishers) returns in a gritty new adventure — but he's mute and confused and suddenly also in the body of an actor playing westerner Black Bart (the original DD's identity was Bart Hill). But it begins with the Winslow House: a shambles that people call home, where they take in our damaged lad. It is also in a bad neighborhood, and no one will stop criminals from tormenting the residents...until The Death-Defying 'Devil shows up! Includes 12 outstanding covers, four by Lucio Parrillo! AMERICAN DAREDEVIL Comics, Communism and The Battles of Lev Gleason
Highly Recommended. By Brett Dakins. American Daredevil is the story of Lev Gleason, a titan among comic book publishers in 1940s New York who fell victim to two of Cold War America's defining crusades: a nationwide campaign to censor comics, and the paranoia of the Red Scare. Beginning with Silver Streak and the original Daredevil—who like Captain American fought Hitler before the U.S. entered the war — it was his team, Biro and Wood, who created Crime Does Not Pay. That title outsold every other comic in the 40s, and started the crime trend that eventually resulted in the creation of the Comics Code. CharterHouse, 2019....More.

Item Code: AMERDE
Soft Cover, 6x9, 220pg, b&w
Here are archives of Daredevil Battles Hitler/Daredevil Comics and Silver Streak (where DD first began, by Jack Cole) Vols 1 and 2. He's also covered in an article in Alter Ego #155 [AE155. $9.95] and of course in Secondary Superheroes [SECSG. $75].

ELVIRA The Shape of Elvira
By David Avallone. Art by Fran Strukan. Cover by Francesco Francavilla. The Mistress of the Dark lands the leading role in a touching art film about human/gill monster romance, but there's something decidedly fishy about her costar. Bone and four photo covers of our gal herself. Dynamite, 2021....More.

Item Code: ELVSE
Soft Cover, 6x10, 120pg, Full Color

She's being stalked by the most terrifying nightmare to ever walk the Earth (no spoilers!). Thrills, chills and double-entendres in this four-issue miniseries. A newly remastered edition of the steampunk heroine's origin and very first adventures, featuring a revised script and updated lettering. In a Victorian world filled with flying dirigibles and clockwork automatons, a young woman searches desperately for the secrets to her past — a past that left her with extraordinary, but unnatural, mechanical limbs. Outstanding artwork throughout, plus variant covers by Garza, Franchesco, Nei Ruffino and J. Scott Campbell. Dynamite, 2021....More.

FOUR-FISTED TALES Animals in Combat
Highly Recommended. By Ben Towle. This is fun, dramatic and informative, all in one. 11 stories. In virtually every military conflict in recorded history animals have both aided and fought (and often died) alongside their human counterparts. From Hannibal's elephants in ancient Rome to mine-sniffing rats in Vietnam, carrier pigeons, gas-masked dogs, cats, kangaroos, camels, horses..Four-Fisted Tales highlights the real-life contributions of these underappreciated animal warriors. Dead Reckoning, 2021....More.

News & Notes

New Flesk Books

I have some very exciting news to share! The Drawings of Edwin Austin Abbey and an entirely new title never before announced, The Call of Cthulhu: A Mystery in Three Parts by H. P. Lovecraft illustrated by Gary Gianni, will be here by the very end of August. Flesk calls these both “labors of love” that have been in various stages of production for over 10 years.

Download Catalog

Here's more from John Fleskes himself: "I've had the good fortune to work with Gary (Gianni) ever since I first started publishing back in 2002. I feel lucky to be able to publish this new book that was designed and edited by Marcelo Anciano."

With Call of Cthulhu, currently we are only getting the softcover—since we prefer not to take advance orders on lower priced items like this, we'll announce it when it arrives. It’s just $19.95. John might know by then if he has enough of the signed hardcover to allow us a few, another reason to hold off ordering it until we know more! -Bud

Here is John Fleskes again: "The Abbey book is one that I initially planned to do after I wrapped up the second Joseph Clement Coll book back in 2006. I have been slowly working on it for over a decade. With the addition of Alice Carter who wrote a fresh essay about Abbey's career, we have a book that we are both very proud of."

As you read above, the Abbey in both softcover and hardcover editions are available for your pre-order.

Covenant: The Art of Allen Williams: the first collection of Allen's personal drawings and paintings. Each of his fantastical characters is accompanied by a line of text, a poem or a brief story that captures their essence. These visual narratives are pulled to the surface through Allen's renowned mastery of storytelling and his use of graphite, pencil and oils. The result is a fascinating journey into the mind of this intriguing artist.

Available in a signed hardcover with bonus pages, and trade paperback. These will be delivered to us along with Gianni's Call of Cthulhu and Edwin Austin Abbey.
