Art by Kristjana S. Williams, et al. Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is a cultural phenomenon. First published in 1865, it has never been out of print and has been translated into 170 languages. But why does it have such enduring and universal appeal for both adults and children? This oversized art book explores the global impact of Alice across art, design and performance from the nineteenth century to today. It shows how Alice has been re-imagined and reinterpreted by each new generation: from the original illustrations by John Tenniel to artwork by Peter Blake and Salvador Dali, and from the 1951 Disney movie to Tim Burton's film. Tate Britain is the home of British art from 1500 to the present day. This guide to the collection provides an essential introduction to the extraordinary development of British art over the centuries: from van Dyke, Hogarth and Reynolds, to Sargent, Burne-Jones and Waterhouse, to the modernists Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and Francis Bacon. About half the book covers our area of interest, paintings up to 1900 or so; the latter half features abstract, cubist and modern art, which I admit I personally have little feel for. So take that as you will! Tate, 2020....More.
