Imperfect Editions & Warehouse Finds

Download Catalog Download Catalog

This email is a mix of new, never before listed Hurts and some previously listed titles. And further down below, new Warehouse Finds.

Why Hurt? It takes very little to turn an as-new, perfect book into what we call a hurt, or Imperfect Copy. Just a dent to the corner, or a bump to the top or bottom of the spine, Occasionally a small cover scuff or small tear in a dust jacket--on rare occasions, maybe a bigger more noticeable bump.

Since we are selling books to you assuming everyone is a collector, we weed these copies out. When we actually show them to customers, often the damage is so minor they don't even notice. But we do, and we worry that our most discerning customers will too.

Only rarely do we have more than two or three copies. But occasionally, we'll get an entire box that got dented on one or more corners and every book was impacted.

Keep that in mind; if you click on something from this list to put it in your shopping cart, and it doesn't show up on the website...that means it's already sold out. They disappear from the site once we sell out.

Most items are discounted from 40% to 50% off--the few that are not discounted are long out of print. Many of these we still handle as regular, as-new items--check our website.

ATLAS AT WAR Hurt
My Highest Recommendation. Art by Russ Heath, John Severin, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Syd Shores, Don Heck et al. Edited by Michael J. Vassallo. Fifty hard-hitting stories from Atlas, the company that became Marvel Comics. Each one hand-picked by Vassallo, a comics historian and world-renowned authority on Timely/Atlas. Marvel published more war titles than anyone in the industry, between 1951 and 1960, and were strongly influenced, at their best, by Kurtzman's EC stories. If you think EC and DC were the only publishers doing poignant, powerful and well-drawn war stories, read this and have your head turned around. This is good. Dead Reckoning, 2020. LEONARDO 2 Hurt
Highly Recommended. By Stéphane Levallois. Planet Earth, engaged in an intergalactic conflict, owes its salvation to the clone of Leonardo da Vinci and to the rebirth of his genius. Levallois draws from the painted and drawn work of the Renaissance master, combined with his own highly original art (along the lines of Bill Sienkiewicz), selecting original drawings and paintings by Leonardo to represent the characters, vessels or even the architectures in his story. The grand scale result is impressive...Leonardo's visions successfully projected into a stunning futuristic sci-fi graphic novel. From France. NBM, 2020. Condition: Bumped corners....More.

CALENDAR GIRLS, SEX GODDESSES, AND PIN-UP QUEENS OF THE 40S, 50S, AND 60S Hurt
Vintage full color pin-up photography, 1940s-1960s. Highly Recommended. Already a bestseller for us! It was the glamorous movie stars of the 1930s that first began the era of pin-up. Stars like Betty Grable and Jean Harlow oozed sexuality—many even posed nude. By the 1940s, this was a new phenomenon that sold millions of calendars and magazines—nudes, but provocative, never explicit, flirtatious but also freespirited. The images never crossed a certain moral line. And that's what we have here, from Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe to June Wilkinson, Diane Webber to Hollywood actresses moonlighting for some extra money. Schiffer, 2019. Condition: Bumped corners....More.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF MURRAY TINKELMAN
Warehouse find, 1980. The BESTIARY is a gallery of unreal beings. Each one seems to have a story, hinted at in the way they all appear to have been caught in the midst of a thought or action, or in the moment just before or after something has taken place. Members of some obscure species that came to be as a result of suits of armor mating with animals, the beasties have in common an extraordinary air of individual temperament and personality. They have the exaggerated, subtly mocking tone of caricature. Tinkelman has used unlikely combinations and a sense of distortion to give the beasties a grotesquely comic aliveness. Murray Tinkelman, 1980. Condition: Very Fine/As New....More.

JOSH KIRBY: A Cosmic Cornucopia
Warehouse find, 1999. Art by Josh Kirby. Foreword by Tom Holt. Josh Kirby's exuberant cover paintings for Jerry Pratchett's bestselling Discworld series have spawned dozens of imitators, but no one has yet matched his irrepressible and chaotic humor. As this definitive collection of Kirby's art—including many formerly unpublished works—proves, his vision has many facets. They go from the wildest fantasies to the hardest sci-fi; some images evoke a macabre realm of horror, others portray chilling futuristic landscapes, but all are wondrous. Paper Tiger, 1999. VERY HEATH ROBINSON Stories of His Absurdly Ingenious World Hurt
Almost Gone! Highly Recommended. By Adam Hart-Davis. Art by Heath Robinson. A big, thick volume of delightful innovation by the prolific artist and humorist who loved to poke fun at the conventions of his day. From the lost world of the Edwardians through to the Thirties and Forties, he charted the rise of machines, from cars to dishwashers, and new ways of living in a series of wonderfully absurd illustrations. Heath Robinson revelled in complicated gadgetry, whimsicality and naughtiness. His charm and wit are universal, teasing a smile or even a full-blooded guffaw from all who encounter his gentle commentaries on human foibles. He even gave his name to a dictionary definition. Sheldrake, 2017. Out of Print. Condition: Slight bump to corner....More.

BUD PLANT VINTAGE 1998 PIN-UP Calendar
By Earl Moran. Yes indeed, we published this ourselves for 1998 and sold it at a nominal price as a fun premium. The actual year date on this is 1953, which was the "mirror year" for 1998, as explained in the cover sheet. Brown & Bigelow is perhaps the most famous name in pin-up calendars, and they were still taking orders for advertising work at this point, so we picked a fun Earl Moran image and added our name and information and logo...just like businesses did it back in the day. Metal top & bottom clamps, art deco border. Brown & Bigelow, 1996. Out of Print. Condition: Some prints have small tears and or creases. Best copies will be shipped first....More.
