When I was out of the office for two weeks in August, I didn’t get to handle and describe the arriving books. I’ve just caught up on editing and describing each of these. Surprise signed bookplate! I really like the art. The story is a grabber that pulls you in. The oblong format is fun and unusual. And we didn’t mention that this comes with a handsome full color bookplate signed by author and illustrator, J.H. Williams and W. Haden Blackman. Worth a look! |

Our Highest Recommendation. The major article on Russ Heath alone makes this a must-have item. All of his work here is from original art, thanks to Heritage. But we also have coverage of George Gross, one of the finest of the pulp cover artists. And the cover feature is on an artist entirely new to us, but very, very good—his work is superb. Highly Recommended. Based on the illustrated memoirs of John Gabriel Stedman, an army captain in Suriname. Incredible documentation and study went into this. And it is drawn in a very enjoyable Tintin style, making it easy on the eyes. I like it. |

This is very impressive. It’s BIG, almost 400 pages. And it has an extensive appendix that offers lengthy biographies of all the important people in the early days of film. Alice herself did 300 films between 1895 and 1922, as the first female movie director. It’s an amazing story. |
Drawing from Photos: Problem Solving and Interpretation Highly Recommended. Patrick J. Jones is one of our favorite illustrators, ever since his first book, The Sci-Fi & Fantasy Art of Patrick J. Jones (2017). Since then he’s been doing art instruction books, like Anatomy of Style and Sci-Fi and Painting Masterclass, but still filled with wonderful fantasy art. This time, we also get nude models and see how he interprets the visual image into a painting. |
